Despite the emergence of the Delta variant of COVID-19, the world is still slowly reopening, and that's why we've seen new movies arrive in theaters on a weekly basis for the past month or so. This week's offerings were both exclusive to the big screen, with Old and Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins battling to make an impact at the North American box office.
Space Jam: A New Legacy exceeded expectations last weekend (despite mostly negative reviews), but the same cannot be said for these two similarly poorly received movies.
Old took the #1 spot with a pretty underwhelming $15.75 million estimated haul for the weekend, while Snake Eyes - which is supposed to serve as Paramount Pictures' relaunch of the G.I. Joe franchise - came in at #2 with $14 million. They received C+ and B- CinemaScore ratings from moviegoers, so it's unlikely that positive word of mouth will help these two in the long run.
Black Widow managed to top Space Jam: A New Legacy's $10 million haul with a solid $10.86 million, but there was a notable drop in box office takings this weekend.
Some believe that could be a result of the rise in COVID cases, but it's just as likely moviegoers weren't particularly interested in watching movies that have Rotten Tomatoes scores of 52% (Old) and 42% (Snake Eyes). Ultimately, it was probably a combination of factors, but this just goes to show that the box office certainly hasn't bounced back just yet.
