G.I. JOE: Concept Art Emerges For Unmade ADVENTURE TEAM Animated Prequel TV Series

It's been a long time since G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero ended and, back in 2010, an idea was mooted to explore the origins of these characters in a series titled G.I. Joe: Adventure Team. Check it out!

After a couple of largely forgettable (and unsuccessful) G.I. Joe live-action movies, 2021's Snake Eyes was meant to relaunch the franchise. Instead, it too was a critical and commercial flop.

However, if Transformers: Rise of the Beasts' ending is any indication, the last hope for these characters on screen will be to pair them up with the Autobots to fight the Decepticons. It's an undeniably exciting prospect and while only time will tell how that goes, many fans would love to also see the Real American Hero on the small screen.

Way back in 2010, it very nearly happened as part of an animated TV series pitched by Fun Publications as a Transformers: Rescue Bots-style spin-off titled G.I. Joe: Adventure Team. Evan Gauntt was enlisted to create the artwork below, with the idea being to convince Hasbro to put a new - toyetic - spin on these characters.

Night Shining, the company that used to license the G.I. Joe franchise, shared details with Seibertron.com (via Toonado.com) and explained:

"An internal pitch that was made to Hasbro back in the mid 2010’s. With the brand having direction issues, the current team at Night Shining (who use to work for the official G.I.Joe licensee) made this pitch. It brought together 1970’s Adventure Team G.I. Joe with the concept of the 1980’s ARAH. This concept was pitched as a mix of appeal to the Rescue Bots and Transformers Prime audience. Basically, what cartoons use to be in the 80’s!"

Putting the spotlight on a young Cobra Commander, Destro, and Baroness with future G.I. Joe's set to make weekly appearances, it was pictured as a prelude of sorts to the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero cartoon from the 1980s.

However, to make this a little more palatable to younger viewers, the show's heroes wouldn't have battled terrorists and were instead going to embark on adventures to protect natural wonders. M.A.R.S. (the company owned by Destro) would have remained a threat, while we'd have even seen a young Snake Eyes in action.

The project never came to fruition and we've yet to see another G.I. Joe animated series on our screens. Of course, that may change with Skybound Entertainment involved and both those characters and the Transformers now part of the same "Energon Universe."

The G.I. Joe franchise debuted in the 1960s and revolves around an elite military team, G.I. Joe, combating the terrorist organization Cobra. The team, featuring iconic characters like Duke and Snake Eyes, defends global peace against Cobra's evil plans.

You can check out some of the concept art from this scrapped G.I. Joe series below. More can be found at Seibertron.com.

I think I just missed it but I never got into GI Joe at any age.

@LiteraryJoe - I was seven when the first "A Real American Hero" cartoon ran in syndication, and I was all the way in through the middle of the 80s, and the Marvel GI Joe comics were my gateway into the wider world of comics (saw Fall of the Mutants advertised in one issue and never looked back.)

ALL OF THAT SAID, yeah, if you weren't between the ages 7 and 12 between '83 and '87, I don't think there's any reason to give a shit about GI Joe.

@ClintThaHamster - That explains it, I was born in 88. I always thought being an immigrant deterred my parents from it but it was probably mostly my age.

@ClintThaHamster - 100%. I was 7 in '87 and I never really got into G.I. Joe. Except the few times Sgt. Slaughter was on; loved that dude.

@LiteraryJoe - if you grew up as a child in the 80’s it was part of the legendary line up of kids shows and GIJoe action figures were the coolest part of being a fan when I was a kid.

The designs look lazy enough to pass for a modern day cartoon.

Seems like it would have been targeted at a younger audience which is fine…

I still do wish Renegades got more seasons then it did.

This looks like shit, though the concept of the Baroness as a sexy intern has some appeal.

Oh, I would absolutely buy the sleazy '70s pornstached Cobra Commander Used Car Salesman action figure.

***Spoiler***

Was bored last weekend so I watched Transformers Rise of the Beasts.

After 2 GI Joe movies, Snake Eyes, and the ending of that movie, I just think that GI Joe will never work in live action.

Thois was a terrible idea and I hope they feel bad for pitching it.

Recently I've been taking my nephew out to the bus in the morning and 1st thing he does now when he wakes up is ask me "Can we watch more G.I. Joe now". I'm so proud of him, I showed him the movie and he became addicted.

It's free on youtube btw with the movie and all the episodes and there is even a never-ending live stream of the show that runs. It's either at Hasbro's channel or the official Joe one, I can't recall.

G.I. Joe was incredibly progressive back then. Not a single episode didn't have a diverse cast of main characters or females on the team.

I thought the first movie was ok to good. Not great, but passable.
Never finished the 2nd one and the Snake Eyes spin-off I literally just learned existed after reading this article ... and I still have no plans to try it.

Thank god this never saw the light of day. I grew up a huge fan of the RAH GI Joe vs Cobra era, and IMO GI Joe: Renegades was absolutely the better route to go with for reimagining it for a modern audience. And lets not forget GI Joe: Resolute as the RAH swan song/ love letter to us older fans.

This whole idea that "terrorism is real, so we cant do that in a cartoon" is horseshit. In the 80s we lived under threat of nuclear war w/ the Soviets and how many kids shows were about technology run amok and post-apocalyptic wastelands? Hell, even the 3D Clone Wars cartoon tackled things like political corruption, terrorism, and gray morality in wartime.

I don’t get how the GIJoe franchise gets treated like crap. It could easily be on Mission Impossible or James Bond level action films. The studio execs in charge of GIJ need to stylize and market towards Adults as todays kids don’t care about the Real American Heroes.

@slickrickdesigns - Because the term "GI Joe" is way too American, militaristic, and gender specific. They'd have to change it to a generic "Action Persons".

@NGFB - or you just don’t and make it an all female cast and turn it into a comedy.

I think the character designs had potential, it would come down to the animation they applied. For example Spectacular Spider-Man had decent-ish designs for the cast, but the animation was so fluid and smooth that it had us all sold to keep on tuning.
