Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ended with Anthony Ramos' Noah, having saved the day, attending a job interview for what he thought was a simple security gig.

The interviewer somehow knew he saved the world and, after thanking Noah for his service, revealed that it was time for him to step up and join his group. Why? Because they're in the middle of a war. With that, Michael Kelly's mysterious Agent Burk handed Noah a business card and moved a plaque on the wall to reveal his secret base.

Along with the movie's lead, we then learned that the card was emblazoned simply with, "G.I. Joe."

With the stage set for the long-awaited Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover movie, fans are excited to now see it take shape. Rise of the Beasts helmer Steven Caple Jr. was briefly eyed to direct but is no longer attached and up until now, there's been no word on a writer.

Today, The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) brings us word that Derek Connolly has been enlisted by Paramount Pictures to pen the untitled movie's screenplay.

He's best known for being a frequent collaborator of director Colin Trevorrow, writing the scripts for Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. He and the filmmaker broke out together with Safety Not Guaranteed and Connolly has also earned credits for Kong: Skull Island, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and Detective Pikachu.

Most recently, he worked on The Legend of Zelda screenplay for director Wes Ball and Sony Pictures.

Avengers: Endgame star Chris Hemsworth is already being eyed for the lead role, though comments from Transformers and G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura have led to fans tempering expectations for what exactly this crossover will look like.

"I don’t look at things like a universe, I look at them as a story and [the Joes] will be a part of the story. I also think the term 'crossover' means different things for different people. For me, the Joes, whoever they are, are entering the world of Transformers, not combining the two worlds."

"The plan is to eventually do [a crossover]. But, for the next movie, it’s the Joes that are coming in for whatever the ending of Rise of the Beasts has led us to believe is possible."

"Oh, they will interact. We haven’t developed a script yet though. What I will say is just like we do with every other movie, it will be a team of Transformers and humans fighting the fight. The Joes will be a part of that."

The untitled Transformers/G.I. Joe movie doesn't have a confirmed release date.

If they can nail this concept, would work extremely well.

@Evansly - I actually had a very vivid dream where not only did this happen, they managed to keep it a secret. It was a Fast movie and all I remember was one of the crew said an autobots name during a chase and you heard a familiar voice and one of the cars transforms and the theatre LOST. ITS. SHIT.

At this point, why the [frick] not man. Tell me you don't want to see Vin Diesel jump off his car and punch megatron in the mouth, and it actually hurt him. I now want to see nothing more.

@TheVisionary25 - I admittedly want the Fast Saga to end first as even robot cars would be too much for the series. But after it's done? Dom getting recruited by the Joes and then a scene hes basically surfing on top of optimus prime while barreling down a highway and then optimus transforms and then catches dom mid air and throws him towards a target. so stupid, so good

@Evansly @Scarilian @TheVisionary25 @bkmeijer1 - So I posted an idea in a different chat a while ago but this could be a pretty cool way of introducing M.A.S.K.. Like something along the lines of the Autobots need expert human drivers for a particular mission against the Decepticons and after the mission is a success the Autobots reward the humans (the F&F crew) by sharing their transforming technology, which the crew integrate into their cars turning them into the M.A.S.K. vehicles. However because the crew went against the government by teaming up with alien robots, they have to go undercover and change their identities (hence Dom becomes Matt Tracker, etc.) and the form the M.A.S.K. team.

On the other hand, the Decepticons, who typically despite the pitiful fleshlings, after having their asses handed to them reluctantly team up with and then share their technology with a group of rogue government agents who end up becoming V.E.N.O.M. after they beat M.A.S.K. (because seriously, a helicopter that transforms into a jet vs. a Camero that turns into... a flying Camero is not really much of a challenge.

But in the end it's the M.A.S.K. team's superior driving abilities and stunts that win the day. Hasbro/Paramount I'll DM you on where to mail the check 😉.

@StSteven - I really don't like how this actually feels within the realm of possibilities
StSteven
StSteven - 6/14/2024, 6:10 PM
@bkmeijer1 - Kinda scary, isn't it? Dom/Matt: "You mess with me, you mess with the whole M.A.S.K. family!". Oh! Then they could bring Brian back as an AI hologram "man in the chair" for the team aka B.R.I.A.N.). He pops up on their monitors in their transforming vehicles and gives them mission info, etc. Dom/Matt: "B.R.I.A.N., where to next buddy?" or "B.R.I.A.N.! My rear left stabilizer's not responding! I need an override stat!".

Dude, I need to stop this before we see an article here tomorrow that says "Paramount and Universal Announce a Joint M.A.S.K. Project That Will See the Worlds of Transformers and Fast Collide". 😉
Scarilian
Scarilian - 6/16/2024, 12:23 PM
@StSteven -
I could see that working, they'd probably need to explore the idea of the Autobots having to put faith in the human drivers and that could be a neat concept to explore.
StSteven
StSteven - 6/16/2024, 2:50 PM
@Scarilian - Well there's actually something of a precedent for that in TF history. If you recall back in the G1 days they had the "Masters", i.e. humans/Nebulons who became the Autobots' (and ultimately the Depticons' as well) heads and weapons and discovered that they could operate better as a team (they revisited the concept a couple of years ago with the "Titan Masters" toy line and Netflix animated series - kind of).

So it could serve as something of an adaptation of that concept in live action which would give the TF movie franchise something fresh to do while also launching M.A.S.K.. And even if it weren't the actual Fast characters (which would require Universal and Paramount to team up which I highly doubt), the humans could be "Fast-ish" characters and the concept could still work. Still waiting on that DM Hasbro/Paramount!

Easiest method would be to drop Noah and Mirage and instead pair the G.I.Joe characters with a Transformers character each. This would give you a full team of military human characters with the Autobots, so we won't have to deal with the Autobots worrying about the human characters being at risk during action sequences and we can focus more on popcorn style mayhem. Develop their characters by having them bump heads with their Autobot counterparts or bond depending on their personalities and you can do some cool Autobot & Human action sequences where they are riding in/on the vehicle mode.

It sounds that instead this is more of an introduction to the concept of the G.I.Joe, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have a small role in the film, potentially just showing up at the start and end.

Also curious as to if they'll count this film as a sequel, part of the announced trilogy that started with RotB OR if this will count as its own thing. Are we to expect Unicron to return? Will we get the Predacons and classic Megatron we were teased?

Question:

Those sh!tty Transformers toy commercial movies make about a billion dollars per movie. A lot of people like them.

The G.I. Joe movies have been horrible and flopped. Most people don't like them at all.

Regarding the next Transformers movie, why would they want to screw that up by adding G.I. Joe?

dracula
dracula - 6/14/2024, 2:36 PM
@DocSpock - although post shia movies, they have had diminishing returns even when the film is good

4 made a little less than 3

5 made a lot less than 4

Bumblebee made a decent amount less than 5

Beasts made a little less than bumblebee
DocSpock
DocSpock - 6/14/2024, 2:52 PM
@dracula -

That's true, and I understand it. But with the decline in each movies' box office, why hurt it further with a total flop added in? It just seems that will make things worse, not better.

This is a comment I left earlier today under the Jurassic World 4 article...

@Apophis71 - You'll get your military dinos when they crossover with G.I. Joe...!
After that, the sequel where we get the Transformers with Dino-Bots doing battle with the "real deal"...!☮️👍

Dude doesn’t have the best resume imo but he was a co-writer on a lot of these projects rather than the sole one so willing to give him the benefit of the doubt….

Also in the case of TROS , he has story credit alongside Trevorrow , Abrams & Terrio but he didn’t write the screenplay for it (he co-wrote Duel of Fates which imo had its issues but seemed like a better ending to the trilogy).

Anyway , still haven’t seen Rise of The Beasts but I’m an intrigued by this and hope atleast this allows Gi:Joe to get the love it deserves…

The last thing from that franchise I enjoyed overall was Renegades.

As long as it doesn’t have that silly robot suit from the end of the last movie. That was terrible.

G.I. Joe has epic potential and they really screwed it up. There is a lot of lore there a great writing team could have turned into an epic franchise. The cartoon had its high points. The creation of Serpentor was really good. The animated movie wasn't bad either consider it was the 80's.

I'm not sure how much further the Transformers franchise can go. The revolving cast doesn't help including the robots. Why they didn't keep a consistent cast of characters I'll never know. They've changed Megatron so many times I can't even count. The reason the animated movie worked so well is because they built up to this universal threat. For this to work, you almost need to reboot G.I.Joe first. The last one was basically the Rock and these other characters.

Lorenzo Di Bonaventura is the worst of the worst. Hasbro needs to find a new producer.
