It's been a hard week for Martin Campbell's Green Lantern. The almost universal negative reaction to the comic book adaptation left fans wondering what went wrong. Film currently has only 21% on Rotten Tomatoes with 122 reviews. Now, the first box-office results have arrived, and Green Lantern (3D) made as much as X-Men: First Class (2D) and a little more than Thor (3D).

From Deadline:

"Warner Bros is very pleased with DC Entertainment's Green Lantern 3D opening of $3.35M midnight showings from 1,810 venues, which bettered Marvel/Paramount's Thor midnights ($3.2M from 1,800 locations) and were on a par with Marvel/Fox's X-Men: First Class prequel midnights ($3.3M from 1,783 theaters)."

Not really sure about the "very pleased" part. Film's production budget went from $160M to the huge $200M plus marketing. Site goes on to say that Hollywood is expecting around a mid-$50M opening weekend for Green Lantern, to the possibility of $65M-$70M.

So what do you think? Have you seen the film? If so, share your thoughts below.

it still has a huge task the budgets around 200 million like I said before negative revies doesn't mean bad box office results and I am sure the 3D prices helped a lot too

I'm a Lesbian, I love the cuncha!

Listen, who gives a shit of critics. Just imagine if it was the other way around. Critics loved it at 90% while the audience hated and it was at 20%. The suits, WB/DC, and the fans would be worst off if it was that way around. Marvel fans would be talking more shit. In fact I don't know the facts but is there currently a cbm in the past with high critic numbers and low audience #'s?

At the end the movie had some faults, it can all be fixed in the sequel. But it is in no way Daredevil, Xmen3 or any other piece of shit cbm that came out previously.

Tie up the lose ends for the sequel and we will be golden.

@ Hellsing - I care more what the average movie goer and fans care than the [frick]ing critics. If this was Gone with the Wind or Casanova then I'll care for the critics because I want Oscar Gold, what we want is high ratings with the average joe and fans....and green rolling in for a sequel.

Honestly I'm the biggest GL fan I know and have read most of the comics forthiss character, and I'm a huge DC fan…in saying all that I have to admit with a VERY heavy heart that this movie was terrible. Plot holes and bad writing killed it. I love the character and comic so much that it pained me to sit through it.

To my fellow GL brethren, please don't be biased critics so that we will not have to endure an even worse sequel. DC should go back to the drawing board and hopefully reboot in a couple of years. There is so much potential in GL; think of all the epic space movies that could come from it!

Just a tad bit more than Thor on Midnight, remember, Thor opened in May, while schools were still in session. Most teenagers or kids would not be out that late on a Thursday night during the school year, especially with Finals in May.

There were more kids out for the summer to see GL, and it only got slightly more than Thor did at Midnight. What was Thor's US opening, 66 million? If GL gets that then I would be impressed. But what helped Thor was great word of mouth. Lets see if GL carries the same weight.

@Capfanlex005

MINOR SPOILER (nothing big though)
The movie jumped from event to event too quick. it was missing more training, and more corps members in action. The Paralax fight was entirely TOO SHORT. It didn't even really explain Sinestro scene during the credits.

Thats the only thing I could clap about during the movie

So I guess I'm a lesbian. lol

@blueorangeny

I personally did not like the movie at all. They can fix in the sequel, but this movie was so grossly disorganized. There were so many un-needed scenes, no character development, and a useless Hector. Other than the CG, the story, screenplay, character development was downright amateurish.

To me, it didn't have just a few faults. It had a ton. This movie had a ridiculous amount of potential, lets be truly honest.

Like JayOh says, I'm a fan of GL too, but unfortunately we have to swallow the tough pill here and be frank. This was nowhere near good. Lets hope they get their shit straight in the inevitable sequel.

But for one, the critic were right on this one. It'll make money, but that didn't stop Spider-Man 3 or X-Men 3 or Wolverine to still be considered bad movies.

What do you guys thing this is going to make all together worldwide?

considering the marketing and other costs its going to have to make over $400 b4 its considered a real success which will be tough. its not individual critics that will harm the film its everyone being online not knowing much about the film other than the fact its been panned b4 critics. THAT CAN BE influential in box office, ends up just being apathy towards the film.

Listen guys, the critics loved Black Swan. It won Oscars and I couldn't stand the movie. It was completely whack. So why would I continue to listen to critics for? I completely understand to that if the movie ain't good then it's just no good. But I like to to judge for myself. i've seen some straight-to-dvd movies that imho way better than many that had theatrical releases!!!

@Blueorangeny:
Actually there has been such a movie as I recall, Superman Returns got great reviews from a lot of the top critics and was loathed and bashed on by almost every single fanboy over the world. So yes, such a CBM exists. But then again I don't really know about the general audience, but I know that when I watched it the first time with my friends, they turned it off after half an hour because they were too bored :P

The opinion of the critics is not always right, thats true. But its not always wrong either. In fact, most of the time, they're pretty much around the ballpark of what the public think, only a little harsher times, kind of why they are critics. The ratings have a point. And for this movie, they were on the dot.

As for whether you dislike Black Swan or not...that was YOU. Not the public. The public opinion of the movie is just about the same as the critics'

I'm not surprised that it's had the highest midnight showing box office of any of the comic book films. Aside from lack of classes allowing more teen and college students to take in a midnight flick, it's simply more exciting to average DC fans than Thor is to average Marvel fans, thanks to Marvel films being a dime a dozen. And just as with X-men First Class, the midnight grosses only measure the number of people who are so fanatical about it as to go see it at the most inconvenient time.

That excitement among DC fans could still propel it to the largest comic book opening of the year, despite the critical drubbing. Or, just like X-men, it could come in $10m or more behind Thor. Can't really say from these numbers.

Don't let the critics sway u. I loved this movie. Plotholes? Acting? Gtfoh. The movie was amazing. Damn its entertainment people...jus enjoy it. I don't get how the comic community are so easily influenced by the same people who always trash our movies. We really are such a fickle fan base.
And for the guy up above...black swan sucked. Mila and portman making out was the only good thing about the movie

Midnight screenings do not represent the general audience. Geeks and dorks go at midnight.

I love CBM's but would not go to a midnight showing for anything nor do normal people. It may even have a strong day today but Sat and Sun it will fall. Even WB project somehwere between $48-$54 million - which is pretty low.
