I guess it's fair to say this first. I am not a big Green Lantern fan. I've read a bunch of comics with him, and a few from his own series. So I don't know too much about the deeper aspects of the franchise. I have read Secret Origin, and watched First Flight. (Though I've yet to see the live-action film.) I've rented a few of the big arcs from my library. (Sinestro Corps War, Blackest Night, etc.) So I know the gist of things. Now we could move on.

I remember a few months ago when the promo for this show was released. I don't know about you guys, but I thought it looked pretty bad. Not the characters or how the story looked, it was the animation. Man, the animation looked like something from the Nintendo 64. (No offense to the legendary system.) However, since Bruce Timm, the guy who did the groundbreaking Justice League series, would be writing it, it was worth to give it a shot. I wasn't expecting anything spectacular, but wow, it was a lot better than I anticipated. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise, but I was captivated by the story, you are not going to want to miss this.

The story follows Hal Jordan, as he and Kilowog steal a vessel against the Council's orders to go into deep space to find out who or what are destroying Green Lanterns. They get a surprise when they run into beings calling themselves "Red Lanterns." They work for Lord Atrocitus, and will not rest until his will is served.

After a very interesting beginning, we head into some generic, cringe-worthy stuff with Hal, his plane, the dessert, and Carol. Watching that actually made me think, "Wait, is this going to be an origin story?" Thank goodness that was false when Hal powered up with the ring. Once he heads into space, that's when it gets good. I am supremely glad that this show is taking place in space, so we don't have to deal with human drama. (Which isn't bad, but in this show it is.) Once Hal and Kilowog steal the ship and head into deep space, it turns into a triple A plus show.

Like most non-fans, the Green Lantern I knew growing up was John Stewart from the Justice League show years back. So I'm use to the tough-as-nails, no joke one, whereas this one is very laid-back and comical. From what I've seen, it looks they are attempting to match him with his live-action counterpart. (Not half as bad mind you.) I think this would have worked out if this was his early days, in this show he acts a little TOO much like a rookie sometimes. ( He actually though he could sneak past Oa's security by making a Guardian from his ring.) He isn't awful, as the premiere went on, he slowly got more respectable. Kilowog, (who is voiced by the same guy who voices Bulkhead in Transformers: Prime and Pantro in Thundercats) makes this show a lot more fun. However, it's really the villains that stole the show.

I'm glad they didn't go for Sinestro, they didn't didn't mention him at all. This is all the Red Lanterns. The leader, Atrocitus, is one awesome character. What I like is that he's portrayed as evil, but at the same time, has reason. I'm liking the backstory. The followers, Razer, and Modok, um, excuse me, I meant Zilius Zox, are actually very good. They aren't your average run-of-the-mill minions, they're actually pretty cool with some good scripting. Razer is either a character you love or hate, he's going to be having a rather interesting role in the series.

Now that I've seen the animation, it actually isn't that bad. (I'll take it over the horror that is Armored Adventures any day.) The fights are fluid, and actually pretty epic. (Something Armored Adventures is lacking.) Both the voice acting and soundtrack are very good.

Overall, I was greatly impressed by the Green Lantern premiere. With an interesting plot, good characters, and epic action, Green Lantern: The Animated Series is definitely worth the watch, I will be checking this show out.

8/10.

To tell you the truth, I expected this show to fail due to the format being 3D; that is what I get for judging a Bruce Timm series poorly.

I give the premiere a 10 out of 10.

"After a very interesting beginning, we head into some generic, cringe-worthy stuff with Hal, his plane, the dessert, and Carol."

I missed the part about the dessert....was it bread pudding or pecan pie or something....?

roffle roffle

But yeah, it was a decent toon...I was pleasantly surprised. I wish RR had been more like this version of Hal. I'd give it an 8.5/10.

It was great for kids, all that goofy aliens and pastel colour vs pastel colour stuff is perfect to entertain children. Unfortunately it has the opposite effect on mature adults so no matter how much I need to regress a little to enjoy this, it just has zero cool or edge like the Batman Animated series or even the Superman Animated series that Timm and Dini did before it.

Green Lantern in the Justice League cartoon was way better presented then this and he works better in an ensemble rather than a show filled with variation after variation of the same type of character with yet another colourful magic ring! The CGI animation was sterile stuff, didn't help make the presentation any more fluid. Kids should love it though!

Fanboys and young children only! 5/10

It was very enjoyable. I'm glad they weren't scared to show deaths in the show, and the animation and fight scenes were very smooth and fluid. I do agree that the show seemed like it was aimed for a younger audience and was a little less mature than say Batman: TAS, but it was still entertaining and wasn't over the top childish. I'm really looking forward to where the story goes in the future. 8/10 for me.

Very well put together in my most humble opinion. This show should've come before the movie. It would have been the best promotion they could've had without spending all that extra promotional money. The show was solid and fun. The light hearted romantic relationship between Hal and Carol is tolerable and fun. Hal is portrayed as cocky, irresponsible, and fun. Therefore the show is fun like it should especially for a Cartoon Network show. This premier deserves a 9 out of 10. I will be following it closely. Once again DC delivered on it's animation show. Oh yeah the DC Nation promo was great and can't wait for it to hit.

I thought it was really good, but there were two things that kind of made me raise an eyebrow. On one hand I understand why they made these two changes, but on the other it was kind of part of the characters.
The Red Lanterns were not rageing all the time, as they are in the comics.

When (will not say names for spoiler reasons) had the red ring removed, he was still alive, yet in the comics the red ring replaces the users heart, and should the ring be removed, the user would die.

I understand why the changes were name, to add to the villians and allow them to be reused. Still, something I will have to get used too.

I think all the people who doubted this cartoon are now very surprised by the awesomeness of this show. I mean c'mon, its Bruce Timm behind the cartoon, so what do you expect? Love this show!

I thought it was great. I noticed that they didn't explain Hal Jordan's story on how he became a Green Lantern. I wonder if that will come in the later episodes. Hopefully we get to see Sinestro later down the road :D

@Froggy - Yeah we adults acknowledge things HAVE colour, not stories based on power that's sourced by colour! That's just dumb! We adults call that "Stating the obvious" Because a thing has a colour doesn't mean you have to call it by the colour PLUS its identification. That's something teachers practice on children to get them to learn in kindergarten..

Red car, Blue car, Blue Sky, Green Leaves etc. Once you grow up a little it's just a damn car, colour non descript unless necessary. It's just a leaf, intelligence and experience makes the fact that its "green" go without saying! Same goes for the sky, the fact its blue goes without saying unless your some fresh out of the vag child!

The entire concept of Green Lantern is mired by this child like fundamental colour code that fanboys stuck in their youth-minds will never grow out of but as the movie proved, simply has limited appeal to mature adults. If Superman was called "Blue-Superman" or Batman called "Black-grey-Batman" you'd begin to understand how corny and silly names like Green Arrow, Red Tornado, Blue Beetle and the entire Green Lantern concept appears to a sensible thinking adult!

Ceejay - 11/12/2011, 1:11 AM
@greenlanter13 - If you actually read Watchmen then you'd know just how much it isn't written for kids. I don't know where you got the name 'Owl-Man' from but the actual character is called "Nite Owl" which is less corny sounding and Dr Manhattan which is based on the Manhattan project that created the atom bomb and again no way near as corny sounding!

And yes I agree, its the tales you tell with the stories but when the concept is sourced from something as immature as Green Lantern is, then its foundations hinder any progression of the narrative. Aliens that base their entire organization by human names for colours and human inventions (a lantern?), duhhh, dumb! Charging a ring from a powersource shaped like lantern.., why? The masks that hide nothing and worn by some and not by others.. pointless! And then the whole nursery-rhyming Oath just brings it all down to kiddie crap. Fanboys only, normal adults grow out of corny characters like Green Lantern so don't expect any movie based on this stuff to be popular with anyone but kids and fanboys who never grow past need to keep everything the same way it was when they were kids!
