Green Lantern Director Martin Campbell On Fans, 3D Effects And More!

In some more excerpts from Martin Campbell's interview with Total Film, the director goes into even more detail about upcoming Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment movie, Green Lantern. There's much more to see in the actual magazine (including interviews with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively) so be sure to pick that up when it goes on sale this week!

On The Fact That Green Lantern Is A Lesser Known Character:

"Green Lantern may be a tiny bit better known than Iron Man was, but Iron Man was a bloody good film, which made the difference. But certainly from Batman or Superman we're a level down in terms of being recognized."

On The Sometimes Negative Reactions From The Fans:

"The fanbase is bound to be offended by something. You can never satisfy them all. I went to Comic Con in San Diego and it was a mad house, these people are dyed-in-the-wool fans and the outfit is always the bone of contention with any of these characters."

On The Budget For The Movie And That affected Filming:

"It's interesting that there were budget restrictions. So you don't have the massive sequences that you always start off envisioning before the cost comes in and everyone basically shits a pumpkin -- and then you downsize the thing. I would have liked to have done that but that we just couldn't afford."

On What He Thinks About Movies Which Covert To 3D After Filming:

"There was little talk of 3D when we started. It does nothing for me. I enjoyed Avatar and I thought it was so beautifully done but Cameron is a genius with that stuff. But just go and see Clash of the Titans and that will give you a headache from the start. And [with] all these post-3D films you get a sense that they are just cashing in on the ticket price."

With an all star cast which includes Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, Blake Lively as Carol Ferris and Mark Strong as Sinestro, director Martin Campbell's Green Lantern is set to be released in 3D on June 17, later this year!

Its people like CaptainStrips that really make me hate marvel fanboys.
Anyway, I definately agree with him on converting to 3D after filming.

CaptainStraps, where in this interview can you tell that Campbell knows "the movie will be shit?" Thor made less than it was supposed to so don't get too excited.

Hey @Straps...stop being biased and admit that GL will be good. Will it hit as high as Dark Knight, Iron Man or Spiderman? Likely not, but admit it looks good

CeltoC527- Agreed.

All what he said was the truth, how can you disagree with that? He's not sugar-coating anything.

I don't understand after reading that interview how you managed to interpret that he's calling it "a bad film", unless you're partially retarded.

I love Marvel AND DC. And it still upsets me to no end when Marvel fans like our not-so-good Captain up there are just looking for something about a DC property to whine and moan about.

The fact is, we are in for a good summer for CBMS. Green Lantern included. Its director really seems to know what hes doing. And he did direct Casino Royale.

(If you ignore trolls, they eventually go away.)

@Straps I agree that the mask isn't very good, but you can't say anything about the acting or even the overall dialogue until you've seen the film. It's hard to do otherwise.
And how does the suit look like bacon? LOL

OK... you guys will hear this first.... GL is starting to warm up to me a TINY TINY BIT. But in all honesty, the CGI is going to make or break the film to me. I still think it won't do well sales wise, but the CGI still looks so damn cheesy...

So wait? GL wasn't filmed in 3D? So he's blasting the conversion process yet GL used 3D conversion in post-production? Huh?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought skinny steve didn't look too good. Not gonna lie, in some scenes it looks pretty believable, but in quite a few I saw in the trailer, did not look good. I can understand not digging the mask for Green Lantern in the film, but I think everything else looks pretty spectacular. Can't wait to see the finished look of it in theater. :D

me and a girl I chat with at a game store were talking about this for a few days, just how much we are worried about the overall look and feel of the movie. The effects and design are indeed bad choices...even the almighty Geoff Johns should have stepped in and said something. I think another problem is that Green Lantern is such an ancillary hero in the DCU, only die hard fans will know who he is and what he can do. The mainstream fans know Spider-man, Batman, and Superman cuz they have had movies and have been routed into the pop culture to know these characters.....Marvel Studios has been lucky with there gambles but this one is essentially a make or break for WB/DC....it will make money but not what they are hoping for...if it breaks even will be at best....and thats saying a lot for it with what we have seen

Really? Green Lantern is more well known that Iron Man?....that I can't believe....people who have seen JL and JLU know Rayner and Stewart but not many know who Hal is....Iron Man has been in a bunch of things and has become a marketable brand for Marvel

It's easy to see how movies like Avatar and Lord of the Rings spoiled all of us. We think every movie needs to be on that level nowadays and frankly, from a budgetary standpoint, that's just impossible.

I think the reason the CGI appears "sub-par" (come on people it's not TERRIBLE!), is because of the "cartoony" nature of Green Lantern energy. Everything is almost a uniform green and glows with an unworldly, artificial light. It's not supposed to look "realistic" because green energy is literally a figment of the user's imagination, so it's naturally going to contain that bit of "un-reality" to it. I think the vistas of OA and the scenes with Parallax look amazing.

Marvel fans like CaptainStraps are just insecure about their favorite universe and feel the pathological need to "down" anything they feel is a threat. Personally, I like both universes, there are good and bad about both of them.

I don't go into a film looking for out of this world CGI and expecting that to make-or-break the film (which is kind of like looking for a girlfriend and only going by looks instead of personality. Pretty shallow if you ask me). I go in for the story and the characters, and to a lesser degree, the action. If those three elements are spectacular, then I can easily overlook CGI effects that maybe aren't "top of the line" (but still better than 90% of what's come before).

Post conversion can be bad if it's rushed. Like Alice in wonderland and clash. If done during the duration of post production and done correctly. U will never know the difference ( usually) between something shot in 3d and something converted.

"everyone basically shits a pumpkin "

I feel
Just like how Fox and Sony need to give Marvel back their rights
WB needs to give them to another company... maybe a potential DC Studios?

Maybe if WB would of subsidized ($$$$)more into the GL project- maybe "Negative Reactions From The Fans" wouldnt happen

Its like they never learn

I always see more fanboys of GL wearing shirts and god forbid the rings in conventions (but that goes for all DC characters where their "older" fans are more showoff than Marvel fans).

Iron Man/Anthony Edward Stark was almost a pariah during the Civil War era and many comic dudes still hate him for what he was written during that time. The 2008 movie provides big a turnaround to B- lister Iron Man though what people remember is Robert Downey Jr, not really Tony Stark himself.

well i HOPE this movie does well,it will lay the groundwork for future sequels and for future DC movies like flash and aquaman which will be cool.

with martin Campbell as director and Geoff johns as producer I think this should turn out to be a good movie.I personally don't have an issues with CGI,even THOR had issues with CGI,it wasn't perfect in some scenes.

very excited for this and looking forward to this :):)

Will you shuddup Captain Straps and go back to some Cap A threads where your "expertise" (whatever might that be) can be of some use?

He was pretty honest and direct, I like that. I would love to know what visions he had in his mind that ended up on the cutting room floor cause of the budget. Maybe on dvd/blu-ray.

@bigshow2312....you do realize Warner Bros in effect IS DC right? ...they own DC.

anyway...i think if they wouldve spent more time on this..maybe started earlier...they couldve got a better trailer out earlier...i think there is a downfall to this it'll be lack of promotion.

and ive said before and will say again: Nathan Fillion shouldve played Hal Jordan!!
i think since GL isn't as big of a character as some others they felt they needed a larger caliber actor (more easily recognizable)...but i still think Fillion was/is the better choice. ...and Ryan Reynolds shouldve been Wally West Flash!!!!
I really want this movie to do well but i'm worried for it...i just dont know if it was a smart move to try and tackle something this large yet. ...i think they shouldve gone with something like Flash first...and do it really well then have even more money to play with to really nail the special effects for this. And why the ef would you waste time/money on that Sh*tty Jonah Hex movie?! i mean JH is cool and all but they shouldve known that movie was gonna blow. gggrrr... and to think they couldve had a Joss Whedon-made Wonder Woman movie...shhhheeesh. sometimes i wonder about DC. ...when they do it right they really nail it but it seems they have a history of taking too long and missing great chances.
maybe i just want a d@mn Flash movie....idk...but Ill say again that Ryan Reynolds shouldve been Wally West...
hey maybe we'll get a GL sequel and Fillion will play Kyle Rayner...and then maybe a third with some bad @$$ playing John Stewart
...i just really hope this does well. ...im nervous it wont though. i'm hoping the fact that they're already writing the sequel means they know something we dont.
