OSCARS: GREEN LANTERN Only 2011 CBM Not Considered For "Achievement in Visual Effects"

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has today released a list of the 15 movies they'll consider for the 84th Academy Awards, and Green Lantern is the only 2011 comic book movie which failed to make the cut.

In the build up to the release of Green Lantern, perhaps the biggest talking point was the fully CGI suit that would be "worn" by Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. The first trailer resulted in a huge amount of backlash aimed at Warner Bros. and while this eventually started to die down by the time of release, the movie was still heavily criticized for both the awkward looking suit and generally poor visual effects throughout. It may then not come as too much of a surprise that Green Lantern is the only major 2011 comic book movie to not be considered by the Academy for an Oscar nod. Here is the full press release courtesy of Deadline.

Beverly Hills, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 15 films have been selected for consideration for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 84th Academy Awards®.

The films are listed below in alphabetical order:

"Captain America: The First Avenger"
"Cowboys & Aliens"
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2"
"Hugo"
"Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol"
"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"
"Real Steel"
"Rise of the Planet of the Apes"
"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows"
"Sucker Punch"
"Super 8"
"Thor"
"Transformers: Dark of the Moon"
"The Tree of Life"
"X-Men: First Class"

In early January, the members of the Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee, who selected the 15 films, will narrow the list to 10. All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on Thursday, January 19. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

With all three of Marvel's 2011 contributions on the list, as well as plenty of other blockbusters, it's hard to find a movie which doesn't deserve to be considered by the Academy. However, do YOU think they made a mistake by not including Green Lantern? More importantly, which of the films listed above deserves to walk away with the award? Sound off with your thoughts below.

GL had better effects than several movies on that list. Such as Real Steel, Cowboys & Aliens and Pirates. Shame.

Though I can't deny that there was too much CGI in the film. If they make a sequel, then they should go with regular costumes. Would be cheaper.

GL deserved at least the visual effects oscar, what a shame, only by having OA the movie should at least be considered.
The effects on X-MEN:FC weren't that amazing.
But from that list, Rise of the Planet of the Apes should get it in my opinion.

Green Lantern had a lot of potential with there CGI, and had some cool shots, but overall it was a disappointment, as Oa looked stall and lifeless, not like it was filled with life (but i would say Lantern may deserve a best conceptial design nomination).

Rise of the Planet of the Apes obviously had the best CGI, with such believable rendering that it would be a disgrace for it not to win.

Captain America did a good job at making Chris Evans look like a weak little guy so i would like to see it get nominated. Transformers does one thing right and thats effects so it should get a nomination. Harry Potter should get it cause it was awesome. And Hugo is the only one close enough to earn the oscar more then Apes, so Hugo should defiantly get nominated and i wouldn't mind seeing it win.

I thought the effects in GL were decent, nothing special but definitely not the worst thing about the movie.

Green Lantern was NOT the "only one" to not be listed. As Gusto pointed out, Dylan Dog is not listed, and neither is Green Hornet.
This just looks like an excuse to bash on Gren Lantern some more.
Though as bad as it was, I enjoyed it far more than Captain America. But not as much as Thor.

Neither Dylan Dog wasn't a big budget movie and had mostly make-up, not so much SFX. Same goes for Green Hornet which was very light on SFX to even be considered.

Green Lantern had a bigger FX budget than nearly everything on that list except Transformers and they even added to that budget with a further $9 million in post production.

Money well spent... NOT!

This movie should not be awarded with anything. We should make excuses for bad movies.

I retented GL and I too embarrassed to stay awake to watch it the first try. I had to force myself to watch it with my family.

I could hardly laugh at the movie because it mostly sad to watch. The animated movies were much better..

So poo poo to this film. We demand better from Warner/DC.

The Oscars?!? who [frick]ing cares about the oscars? GL had better effects than Captain America. As for the CGI suit....I'll say it one more time... THE RING GENERATES THE SUIT! so a physical suit would be wrong. Production design on GL was spot on.

I could think of any good thing to say about its visual effects. The only thing I could say about the effect is that they looked expensive.

I do agree that Captain America special effects weren't that good for the most part.
But The skinning Steve To super Steve was some of the best visual tricks I ever seen in movies period.

So can stick your (Cap)America hate up your ass.
