What WB/DC should consider when making a Green Lantern Sequel.

What WB/DC should consider when making a Green Lantern Sequel.

I created this mainly for open discussion, but this is what I think Warner Brothers should do in order to market a great Sequel for Green Lantern.

It was the most anticipated movie of the year next to the epic finale of Harry Potter. Most critics bashed it, fanboys reviews and thoughts come out to a 'meh' response, and the mainstream audience seems to find it an enjoyable movie.

I, for one, thought it was very good despite its flaws. It's gone on my top ten CBMs. I think the main reason why its struggling at the box office is due to the negative reviews from critics. I do believe that many haters on CBM.com were influenced by the reviews and went in with a negative attitude.

Why, may you ask, does this 'franchise' (quoted by WB) need a sequel?

I am a firm believer that this film won't make its budget worth domestically, but it will come close enough for WB to go ahead with a sequel. It cashed in the same amount that it took Quantum of Solace to make, and that movie didn't make its budget back domestically, and they're makin a sequel despite that MGM went bankrupt. I predict the range of 150-170 for GL.

Martin Campbell's Green Lantern is an origin story; merely focused on Hal Jordan.

But that's not what it should be. It should be Hal and Sinestro. Not Hal and Carol.

If a sequel is to happen, WB should think more carefully on the people they choose. So here are examples that WB should consider in order to make a great sequel.

1. Find a director that knows what he's doing.
In my review, i may have put the blame on Campbell, but after a closer glance, i can see it really wasn't his doing. It was the fact that he didn't know too much about GL, and trusted the writers in knowing which direction to take the movie. He's a realism director; one that prefers stunts over CGI. The computer graphics in GL were spectacular and lived up to most expectations. But WB needs to take a director that can clearly see flaws in the screenplay and story line. Meaning that a director that wants to tell a great story and showcase awesome characters before laying down memorable special effects. Directors such as Steven Spielberg, or J.J. Abrams. Bottom Line is that Campbell is still a respectable director, its just he wasn't the right choice for GL.

2. Better Screen writers.
In some cases, this is where it hurt the movie, but not hugely (in my opinion) i think WB should go out and get Paul Haggis (screenwriter to Crash, Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace) to do the screenplay and storyline, which in effect would turn out to be a great product if they did. They need a writer that won't throw in cheap one liners or bring in undesired characters into the mix (...like The Matrix...)

However, they should have a little humor in there.

3. More Focus on Hal and Sinestro.

GIFSoup
The theatrical version was too much on Hal-Carol than Hal-Sinestro. For the sequel, it needs to establish a positive relationship between Hal and Sinestro before Sinny turns bad and becomes Hal's nemesis. While they shouldn't focus too much on the action, the filmmakers would have to keep a balance between action and storyline in order to make a formidable movie. But Keep Ryan and Mark in for their roles. And keep JNH as the composer. I know a lot of fans out there disliked the Soundtrack to GL, but you have to admit, this track is fantastic:

JNH would be able to add a little more tension to a must anticipated duel between Hal Jordan and Sinestro.

4. MAKE IT LONGER THAN THE FIRST
When the ring chooses Hal, that's where the movie tends to speed up a bit. With a Sequel, they need to adjust details like this. Where a movie rushes itself is where it looses the audience's trust and likeability. Grant it GL still got a positive response from the audience, but for WB to get a MEMORABLE POSITIVE response from the audience, they would have to shoot from the range of 130-150 minutes. The filmmakers (like i said in # 3) need to establish a smart balance between action, story and characters in order for it to be great and memorable. And a longer movie from 130-150 minutes can do just that.

5. Have a responsible Marketing Plan.

WB spent an estimated 100 million on advertising for this film, bombarding the audience with new TV spots every week, FOUR trailers, quite a few behind-the-scenes documentaries and many ad campaign commercials. They revealed several spoilers for those who were paying very close attention to the trailers, and for the Sequel, they just can't do that. And an embargo as far as reviews backfired greatly, but people still went despite mediocre ratings.

Hopefully GL makes it from the range of 150-170 million domestically in order for sure seal in a sequel, but if it hits a little bit under, then i think WB should still consider it. Honestly, reboots in Hollywood need to stop. Shit's gettin' out of hand these days. Sequel needs to happen if WB wants a Justice League movie and it gives them a chance to greatly improve on the first.

6. LISTEN TO THE DIRECTOR'S PERSPECTIVE
However...from speculations and rumors jumping around the web now, it seems Campbell wants to do a directors cut. Apparently it would contain a dozen deleted scenes that would resolve some fans complaint about the editing. I do think, however, that Campbell's reason why he wontreturn for the sequel because of WB's meddling with what he wanted this movie to be. Campbell's movies are usually two+ hours, and it sounds like he wanted GL to be 2:20. WTF? If that's true, good goin WB. Way to ruin a movie. If there is a Director's Cut, and it shows more involvement with the Corps, then wow. DC deserves to be run by Dreamworks. Yes it is only a rumor, but if you put the pieces of this puzzle together, you can see that it starts to make sense. If a Director's cut is to come out and if it completely blows the theatrical version out of the water, then people are gonna start asking, 'why wasn't this the original version?' As you can see from its trailers, there were several scenes cut out. Like from the first trailer-it seems Hal steps in front of a kid to save him from something. And if you look closer, the kid looks like his nephew.

GIFSoup
bad quality i know, but its the only gif of it I could find :P

And when Parallax is chasing him through space, it is very clear that scene was cut down. I'm sure if there isn't a Directors cut, there will be a least several deleted scenes that'll make us go, 'Um okay. Why wasn't that in the movie?' Just like the deleted scene in Revenge of the Sith where yoda lands on Dagobah....

Don't get me wrong. I loved the version that is in theatres right now. But it could've been so, so, so much better. And I believe Campbell's true version would bring this movie up to the level of Iron Man.

Bottom line is that the Fans want a sequel. The mainstream audience would enjoy to see one hit the big screen, and I'm sure Critics would give the sequel a chance. I mean, they're giving Dark of the Moon one. Warner Brothers should consider doing GL2 after they finish off The third Batman and Synder's Man of Steel. And if it makes its budget worldwide, expect a sequel, one much better than the first, to roll right along. All I know is, that if I'm sitting in the theater in the next 3 to four years, and I see a GL2 theatrical trailer (and it probably won't be comedic) I'll be more than excited.

it should be like this:

I think the current franchise is unable to be saved personally, it was such a bad film it was mind-boggling.
And I love the character.

About your points:
1 - Spot on, while Campbell is a great director, it's obvious in hindsight that he was utterly wrong for this.
Although i wholeheartedly disagree about the CGI, I thought it was so bad it was distracting and took me out of the film.

2 - Not sure about your choices, but yea better quality screenwriters with proven success on a larger scale.

3 - Definitely.

4 - It's nearly 2 hours dude (and I struggled getting through it for the first time in a loooong time), going longer isn't wise unless it's absolutely necessary to better the story and entertainment factor, in my opinion.

5 - Well, again, I don't think they can salvage the film series at all so I have no opinion here.

Blaming screenwriters for anything is always a harsh thing to do. Firstly several scriptwriters will get to have a bash at the story. Most scripts will easily go through between 20 and 40 drafts...sometimes many more.

And by the time producers and directors have got their grubby hands on the script by the time something hits the theatres it could be VERY different from the initial script.

Basically the director has to take ultimate responsibility. If a script/story is bad then it is up to him (and the producers) to make sure it gets rewritten how they want and tell a story they are happy to film. If they 'ok' a script you have to presume they are happy with it.

The bigger the budget, the bigger the risk and the bigger amount of cooks trying to spoil the whole meal. Strangely enough it can be harder to make a good film with a larger budget than a small one.

i don't know it was no where great but it was a entertaining summer movie, sort of like transformers to me,didn't see much of a difference between the 2.

but yes i think despite Campbell been a good director he is better with practical effects movies (Bond,Zorro) rather than CGI movies, that was quite evident and true a change in writers might be a good option too.(why WB thought they were sooooo good to write a sequel i don't know coz it was nothing exceptional )

but like teabag says i don't see good collections coming from overseas by looking at disappointing returns from key overseas market like UK and Russia (though star trek also earned poorly overseas, just $127 million)but GL won't earn star trek like in states so the future does look dim for this emerald warrior.

fingers crossed :)

I found the movie entertaining, but it should've been so much better than it was. The writing was amateur and I felt like the lines were written specifically for Ryan Reynolds sense of humor (which wasn't needed), and the editing was just off, the whole story just seemed rushed.

If WB decides to move forward with a sequel they should A) Hire new screen writers (I personally think Campbell did a decent enough job directing with the story he was given). B) Focus on Hal & Sinestro (Sinestro was the best character in the movie & Mark Strong is perfect casting). C) Have Ryan Reynolds AS Hal Jordan and not the other way around (I swear he's the same guy in every movie, dumb jokes even as Deadpool - save it for the romantic comedies Reynolds), make Hal more badass and less of a comedian! D) More outerspace. Maybe everyone involved with a sequel should watch GL First Flight animated movie for inspiration! Just my opinion.

@ZeroEthic I totally agree that the Franchise is beyond repair. I mean the rest of these guys could say it was good but truth is it wasn't. How would it look to start with a campy/cheesy movie then have a sequel that has more serious tone. I say this because they would totally have to change the tone of the movie in order to make it more plausible and marketable. Something like "The Matrix" with a more cerebral take on the characters.

WE MUST HAVE A GL REBOOT

I want a reboot/sequel like "the Incredible Hulk" did Hulk(WAY better of course). Directed by the Wachowski Brothers with a screenplay by Jonathan Nolan . Weta on sfx. They would have to use Kyle Rayner, set it slightly in the future, and briefly cover how he is the last Green Lantern.

The reboot would be an adaption of Rebirth....and if later they beside to do it, make prequels if they want to get into back story (in the same vain as first class). YOU WOULD NOT GO WRONG!!!!!

PS

Please use subtitles for the Aliens when they are talking where only other Green Lanterns can understand each other. Or, have the ring speaking over alien chatter. It would make it SOO Much more authentic! I wanted to go into GL film and get a SURREAL feeling! And Please do something with the oath, too. I did not translate well on film.

@JarJarBinks
Or people could have different opinions to yours?
It's called personal taste. Just because people agree with the more prominent opinion in the media doesn't mean it isn't genuine.

I went in hopeful, already a fan of the character and liking the actors I was about to watch.
And I thought the movie was terribly put together, I was bored for over an hour.

I don't give movies extra credit because I like the characters, I judge a film as it is, and I thought it was terrible.

@JarJarBinks and EasterBunnyKiller What do you mean how can people say the movie was bad? Because I saw it with my own two eyes during the midnight showing. I don't see how you people say that movie was not bad? Most people who DO say it was good, always say but it the editing was bad or it felt rushed. Doesn't that warrent a bad movie...I know we are all CBM fans but it's really juvenille to give a movie like this a pass if your a grown ass man.

They didn't care to give you the best possible movie, so why should you care to so much that you guys sugar coat the movie!! the only people that really seemed to give a [frick] about this movie was The actors and the art department! Outside of that the movie was all wrong.

@Justsomeawesomekid ... What I would like to see is this branch out over at least 3 movies. The Sinestro Corps war.. and then another trilogy with the Blackest Night story. but the thing that I would like to see happen the most in a GL sequel? A better soundtrack and we need John, Kyle, and Guy.

I thought the GL was good and im anxious for a sequel but if anything happens as far as a reboot goes ...they should go the route of TIH and just do Stewarts, Rayners or Gardners story next with Hal Jordan...yes REYNOLDS in there to cameo or be part of the story but have it focused on one of the other GL's....this way we can keep the continuity and not have to start over.

GL2 will be much better and NO TO A REBOOT!!

Frogman - 6/22/2011, 3:28 PM
I think people calling for a reboot is ridiculous. "its too soon to reboot Spider-Man its only been 10 years" - "reboot GL now" when its been.... no years. RIDICULOUS.

It wasn't even bad. It was a generic origin story which is the main flaw I saw with it. It was ultimately establishing Hal as a character which a first in a franchise NEEDs to do, the sequel would then build upon that character and other characters that they interact with. God some fanboys annoy me.

I dont want a reboot because i thought the cast and everything worked quite nicely. Plus nobody really wants to wait another 2-10 years for a reboot. Besides they got the origin story down so now they can use the sequel to expand into more GL corps relationship and a sinestro corp war. And i really want to see a leading up in the sequel to all the other corps of the spectrum so we can have a really epic 3rd movie, if they decide to make one.

I mean come on blake lively with star sapphire suit= nerdgasm.

Recast Carol Ferris with someone who has an actual personality.
Make Sinestro a bad-ass villain.
Keep the humour away from the corny and make sure Ryan Reynolds doesn't ham it up too much.
Have lots of fighting and action.
Fix that weird suit that looks like its made of green licorice.
And pray that people are willing to give it another chance.

The more I think about it, it seems that the biggest problem was the editing - almost everything that was wrong could have been fixed with different camera angles and cutting the movie a little better.

First you I have to critique what I just saw (I'm late, I know)..
I enjoyed the movie and was expecting much worse based on the critics and other peoples comments. There were some things that really seemed like bad ideas such as the race track previously mentioned.

- Carol seemed very wooden and another 5 or 10 minutes of character development would have been useful.

- One thing I think nobody has mentioned was the music. Green Lantern needed a sweeping thematic soundtrack instead of the rock-in-an-elevator soundtrack. It would have helped immensely.

- I think Hal could have been a little more out of his element on Oa. He needed more time to develop on Oa, time to ask questions, get used to his circumstance, establish relationships.

- Before seeing the film, I caught the scene where Parallax knocks GL into the truck and I thought it was cool and I anticipated more. It didn't happen. I've been itching to see a lenthy superhero battle in a downtown setting for ages (think Superman II). Transformers does not count.

- The tag at the end with Sinestro was not subtle enough. The film should have implied that he was thinking about doing something and not just do it.

I think there are some interesting opportunities for a sequel. Does Hal become over-confident to the point a strong challenge can instill fear? Is being a Green Lantern a full-time or part-time job? How has the world changed since they witnessed Parallax and GL doing battle? He is capable of space travel - what else exists in our sector?

Ryan Reynolds does look a little too clean-cut for this. Perhaps a solid 2-part story could lead to a changing of the guard? One thing to be said for the character - with the power coming from the ring, casting can be flexible like Dr. Who, and not cornered into a single actor like Superman or Batman.

Great editorial, each part made a lot of sense and I truly believe that a sequel is necessary. I loved the movie honestly, despite what many others might say, I thought it was a good movie, and especially a great time at the movies. All of the roles were casted perfectly, what went on within the development of the movie, I can see, made it a problem to many viewers. A sequel is needed in order to withstand Marvel's power, and elaborate with more movies. (Y) Good job

Why the hell can't the people who didn't like it lay off the people that did and vice versa? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but Green Lantern seems to have lead to vicious attacks from both sides. bloody fanboys.

I've said it before, I class a movie as good if I enjoy it, I enjoyed Green Lantern, therefore I class it as a good movie. I would also love to see a sequel to it. Now Hal is more responsible he could have less jokes in the sequel and I really don't want a reboot there was nothing wrong with the cast.

Space scenes = A
Earthbound scenes = F

Initially, the the short amount of space scenes were able to make my day, but after careful thought, what was done in this film is unacceptable. The money, the beloved mythology/characters, the director, the actors {i.e. Mark Strong}.... I mean, what a missed opportunity! The first film in a franchise, especially if it is an origin story is very important. It's very important to the structure of the franchise, like a base to a building. You can't build off of this film, I doubt sequels will be any better. Brand the movie a comedy/parody of the DC character and see how it does in the discount rack. DC should take a step back and work on quality, find visionary talent who can bring life to B-tier characters. REBOOT!

You may be wrong about them making a sequel if they get close to gaining the same amount from sales as the budget. Superman is a much more popular character than Green Lantern, Superman Returns got something like $100 million more than it's budget back from sales, and had largely positive reviews, but WB were dissapointed they didnt get more money so they held off long enough that they could reboot it.

Becuz your right, Majority of the ppl who say its bad are ppl being paid to and/or ppl who just want to see Gore or shit Blow Up - im just put it out there. I loved the movie. But something Warner Bros should do for a sequel is.... don't listen to what the fans want.

The biggest (and one of the only few, imo) mistakes the movie made was it's after credits scene, which was clearly only there because the fans made an uproar about how it should be.

They should have either

A. Saved Sinestro's downfall for a sequel.

B. Actually gave him a reason to take the yellow ring.
