Hello CBMers!!!

"Nostalgia is a powerful feeling; it can drown out anything."
- Terrence Malick

Many of my development years were spent in the 1980s, but my formative years in the 1990s. Does that make sense? I recall the 80s and remember certain things, so to see something of that era referenced is...delightful. Why? Nostalgia of course, that great thing that brings it all back. The recent Guardians of the Galaxy trailer implies there may be some nostalgic elements, in particular for the 80s. Like the above quote states, nostalgia is a powerful feeling. Is it powerful enough to compel an audience?

Now, I know very little about Guardians of the Galaxy. The first I heard of it was when Rocket Raccoon was added to the video game Marvel vs Capcom 3, man that irritated me. Of all the characters that belong to Marvel not to be featured in that game, and they chose to include Rocket Raccoon?? (pretty sneaky Capcom) Anyway, back to the film, the trailer invokes many nostalgic feelings. From the trailer's introduction, which conjure memories to scenes from the Indiana Jones films of the 80s, to that other 80s artifact, the walkman. Plus the hit song "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Suede from 1974 plays throughout the closing sequences of the trailer. They're just rubbing some of the fog from your nostalgia goggles. From things/whispers I have heard, Starlord was taken from Earth in the 1980s. How appropriate. Now I want to see this film just to see how a kid of my generation will fare amongst alien races and worlds. Flight of the Navigator against Thanos? Color me intrigued...

This dip to the 80s doesn't just end with Guardians of the Galaxy. Every decade gets its resurgent nostalgia timeframe, and it appears that it's time for the 80s. This news and pattern only bodes well for Guardians, if in fact Starlord is an 80s kid. The year started off with a very popular RadioShack commercial that featured relics of the 80s. 80s remakes are being released left and right, from Robocop to Endless Love. And this summer? We'll see dinobots on screen and the return of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the big show. Nostalgia is the sole reason I will be in that theater seat on opening night for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles flick. Plus I heard that Nike will be producing the sneakers from Back to the Future II. Just one thing left to say I suppose.....MAN I LOVE BEING A TURTLE!!!

Just imagine how great it will be when it comes time for 90s nostalgia.

Thanks for reading and take care.

This was a good read and i enjoy your enthusiasm towards the trailer. I think of course Guardians of the Galaxy will be a hit not just because it brings up in your opinion nostalgia but the fact that people do enjoy sci fi films in general. The trailer had a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe mixed in with Star Trek which are in there own way successful films. Because the film has a diverse range of interesting character's involves and that it's under the Marvel Studios logo people will of course go to view the film and could possibly enjoy it.

I also want to say that i enjoyed the reference to Indiana Jones in the opening scene of that trailer. All that was missing was Star Lord running through a tunnel being chased by a giant ball would have made the trailer perfect.

I can absolutely get on board with the nostalgia feeling from the trailer. It also felt FUN. I was never big on cosmic Marvel. He'll I just sort of tolerated the Avengers comics. I was a huge X MEN fan growing up. I read the big crossovers like Secret Wars and the Infinity Gauntlet and the occasional Silver Surfer but not much rlsr. Once I saw Thanos in the Avengers I decided to go back and reread the Infinity books. From there I moved onto Guardians and I have to say they are awesome. It seems like they have done a good job translating the characters from page to screen. If you pick up Annihilation and give it a read you will fall in love with the Guardians. Star Lord is just bad ass, he really comes a crossed as a dude that's in way over his head but has plans on top of plans. I think Winter Soldier is going to be great but I'm most excited for Guardians.

I don't know about GOTG, so I was left confused as to why Starlord looks human and was listening to 80's music. Him being taken from Earth in the 80s makes it all make sense now.

I had a fangasm when Another One Bites the Dust played in Iron Man 2. Best part of the movie.

I'm just too young to remember the 80s, but not too young not to have been surrounded by all things born of the 80s when I was a kid. The gigantic television that's really not all that big, but contained within a giant wooden frame of a box that required at least two people to lift. Oh yeah.

Morte

They chose that song because Rocket Raccoon actually sings it in an issue of GOTG.

lol, I know that pick is small, but the bottom pic of Rocket firing the gun has him singing, "Hooked on a feelin'", then of course "OOGA CHAKA...."

Heh, I was born in 1989.. so I don't remember shit about the 80s. But, yeah.. like Tainted said, I was still surrounded by stuff from that era as a child.

I just recently started to really dig into the cosmic stuff, and I'm absolutely lovin' it so far, so I'm excited for the movie. REALLY excited.

Good stuff, man.

Heh, last week.. I suddenly felt the need to listen to "Beyond The Sea". Out of nowhere, the song just went through my head when I was in the f*cking shower of all places, and I just kept randomly replaying it during the week.

After that, it was Miles Davis. Haha, I'm nostalgic about shit I wasn't even alive for.

It's a funny thing.

I think my girlfriend might've heard Bobby Darin more than she ever wanted to in her whole life, haha.

Sorry, babe.

@cipher - had a very similar experience with that Bobby Darin song "Mack the Knife". Just out of the blue, had to hear it.
