James Gunn Believes Gay Characters Could Already Exist In The Marvel Cinematic Universe
Marvel has come under fire for not introducing any openly gay characters in their superhero movies, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has a theory on how that might change...
Marvel has upped the level of diversity in their superhero movies in recent years, but when it comes to LBGTQ characters, the studio's big screen efforts have definitely been lacking. Will that change in future? Time will tell, but Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has elaborated on recent comments about how we could see the Marvel Cinematic Universe shake things up in this respect.
"You know, somebody asked me, ‘Will there be any gay characters in Marvel movies?’ and what I meant was there’s a lot of characters in the MCU and very few of them that we’ve delved into what their sexuality is. Whether it’s guy or straight or bisexual, we don’t really know. Um, so I imagine that there are probably, you know, gay characters in the Marvel universe, you know, we just don’t know who they are yet."
This is obviously just Gunn's opinion, but it's going to be interesting finding out if any heroes or villains we're familiar with are actually gay. Many of the leads can be taken off the table as we've seen them romance members of the opposite sex, but anyone from The Falcon to Happy Hogan could be outed as LBGTQ. Whether or not that will happen is hard to say as it would inevitably cause some controversy.
