Though some believe the movie really should be doing better in all markets, James Gunn's Superman has been performing pretty well at the domestic box office. Internationally, not so much.

The DCU reboot still managed to top the global box office once again during its second weekend in theaters with $102.45 million ($57.3 million domestic and $45.2 million international), and now sits at a worldwide total of $406.8 million. Even so, when $236 million has come from North America and $171 million from the rest of the world, it's clear that audiences overseas are not embracing the movie in quite the same way.

While speaking to Rolling Stone, Gunn weighed-in on the domestic/international box office disparity, and he believes a number of factors are to blame.

"We’re definitely performing better domestically than we are internationally, but internationally is also rising and having really good weekday numbers in the same way we are. So obviously the word of mouth is very positive both here and everywhere else. Which is the thing that we needed to do the most. At the same time, there are certain countries in which it’s really performing well. Brazil and the U.K."

"Superman is not a known commodity in some places," he went on. "He is not a big known superhero in some places like Batman is. That affects things. And it also affects things that we have a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now. It isn’t really helping us. So I think it’s just a matter of letting something grow. But again, for us, everything’s been a total win. Having the movie come out and be something that has been embraced by people everywhere — this is just the seed of the tree that Peter and I have been watering for the past three years. So to be able to have it start off so positively has been incredibly overwhelming."

Though some might accuse Gunn of making excuses here, he's not wrong. By and large, Superman has always been more popular in North America than the rest of the world, and the character does tend to be viewed as a symbol of the United States by some.

Sluggish overseas numbers aside, analysts believe Superman should finish its theatrical run at around the $640M-$700M mark.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

The cast also Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as "Ma" and "Pa" Kent, and Milly Alcock's Supergirl has been confirmed to make her debut ahead of her own Woman of Tomorrow movie.

"And that’s a wrap," Gunn posted last year when filming concluded. "God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set - and for that I am forever grateful."

You can check out a synopsis for the movie below.

"In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind."

@vectorsigma - Twisters also had a good domestic BO and a small international BO for example. Was that also an anti-American sentiment around the world?

People around the world simply didn't care for Superman. Simple as that.

@Moriakum - TBF, Europe doesn't get destructive twisters so it isn't that surprising if a mostly American type weather event will play better in America than Europe in the same way a Tsunami type one likely does better than average in Japan compared to some land locked nations.

@Moriakum - Exactly. Superman isn’t a “Well known superhero” Is Gunn serious?? He’s the mii oh at well known superhero I the world. Batman may be more popular but he’s not number 1.

And one could argue that Gunn showed the most “Anti-American sentiment” in the film he made. He went out of his way to remove any semblance of patriotism in Superman. There were no scenes of Superman standing in front of or flying any American flags at all (like in all the pro American Reeves films). It sounds like Gunn is projecting.

He even made America the “bad guys” when he had them working with his Israel stand in to invade the nation of brown people.

I’d argue the film would have done better internationally if he embraced the “American way”. How can he expect other nations to embrace a classically American hero when even he won’t acknowledge those roots.

@Android - The DCEU burned the brand over time and Superman is not that good. And I personally take the first Transformers movie or Bumblebee over this movie any time.

Respectfully, Mr Gunn, what there is in the world right now is an anti-right; as it should be.

For every Trump in the US there's dozens others like Bolsonaro in Brazil, Meloni in Italy, Le Pen in France, Weidel in Germany, Mitsotakis in Greece. Trump's election didn't create those leaders. It empowered their supporters who were formerly closeted about their values (or lack thereof) to be more openly vocal about it.

As such, the US is not seen as the be-all end-all evil as you imply. It is, however, seen as the root of it, and not unjustifiably so.

@Latverian - I'm sorry to say, but as a resident of the rest of the world, the global south specifically, the difference between the left and the right administrations has never been big enough for us to appreciate one over the other. For all my life, America has always been an empire that unfairly exploited at least somebody out there for its own interest, and the last couple of years with both Biden and Trump, that idea has only been cemented even further. I've always dreamed of visiting New York one day because of my big love for Spider-Man, but nowadays I question if it's morally right for me to step foot on American soil and pump money into its economy (more than I already do) when all I am to it is cattle. My life remains undisturbed only because America and its allies are yet to find use in exploiting my home beyond its breaking point.

@Latverian - Someone asked Hitler - “Why, do you call yourself a National Socialist, since your party programme is the very antithesis of that commonly accredited to socialism?”

Hitler replied- “Socialism, is the science of dealing with the common weal. Communism is not Socialism. Marxism is not Socialism. The Marxians have stolen the term and confused its meaning. I shall take Socialism away from the Socialists.”

“We must uproot the canker of Marxism.” "In my scheme of the German state, there will be no room for the alien, no use for the wastrel, for the usurer or speculator, or anyone incapable of productive work."

Somehow they sound like altered words by Trump -
~I shall take away Woke from the Democrats. We must remove the cancer that is liberalism. In my Make America Great Again scheme, there will be no room for the alien (or human rights), no use for the slacker, for the lender or gambler, or anyone incapable of productive work.~

(But, regardless of this, apparently Hitler is a socialist and Trump is fighting against people like him. Hence, we must root for Trump to irradiate socialism. Hail... Ahem.) < Most people’s reaction to facts related to politics.

LiquidSwords

@SpiderParker - It had more to do with democrats trying to get rid of the Constitution and using big tech to do it. Also trying to force us to be subservient to the government. Trump is the opposition to that.
