Though some believe the movie really should be doing better in all markets, James Gunn's Superman has been performing pretty well at the domestic box office. Internationally, not so much.

The DCU reboot still managed to top the global box office once again during its second weekend in theaters with $102.45 million ($57.3 million domestic and $45.2 million international), and now sits at a worldwide total of $406.8 million. Even so, when $236 million has come from North America and $171 million from the rest of the world, it's clear that audiences overseas are not embracing the movie in quite the same way.

While speaking to Rolling Stone, Gunn weighed-in on the domestic/international box office disparity, and he believes a number of factors are to blame.

"We’re definitely performing better domestically than we are internationally, but internationally is also rising and having really good weekday numbers in the same way we are. So obviously the word of mouth is very positive both here and everywhere else. Which is the thing that we needed to do the most. At the same time, there are certain countries in which it’s really performing well. Brazil and the U.K."

"Superman is not a known commodity in some places," he went on. "He is not a big known superhero in some places like Batman is. That affects things. And it also affects things that we have a certain amount of anti-American sentiment around the world right now. It isn’t really helping us. So I think it’s just a matter of letting something grow. But again, for us, everything’s been a total win. Having the movie come out and be something that has been embraced by people everywhere — this is just the seed of the tree that Peter and I have been watering for the past three years. So to be able to have it start off so positively has been incredibly overwhelming."

Though some might accuse Gunn of making excuses here, he's not wrong. By and large, Superman has always been more popular in North America than the rest of the world, and the character does tend to be viewed as a symbol of the United States by some.

Sluggish overseas numbers aside, analysts believe Superman should finish its theatrical run at around the $640M-$700M mark.

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

The cast also Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell as "Ma" and "Pa" Kent, and Milly Alcock's Supergirl has been confirmed to make her debut ahead of her own Woman of Tomorrow movie.

"And that’s a wrap," Gunn posted last year when filming concluded. "God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set - and for that I am forever grateful."

You can check out a synopsis for the movie below.

"In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind."

@vectorsigma - Twisters also had a good domestic BO and a small international BO for example. Was that also an anti-American sentiment around the world?

People around the world simply didn't care for Superman. Simple as that.

@Moriakum - TBF, Europe doesn't get destructive twisters so it isn't that surprising if a mostly American type weather event will play better in America than Europe in the same way a Tsunami type one likely does better than average in Japan compared to some land locked nations.

@Moriakum - Exactly. Superman isn’t a “Well known superhero” Is Gunn serious?? He’s the mii oh at well known superhero I the world. Batman may be more popular but he’s not number 1.

And one could argue that Gunn showed the most “Anti-American sentiment” in the film he made. He went out of his way to remove any semblance of patriotism in Superman. There were no scenes of Superman standing in front of or flying any American flags at all (like in all the pro American Reeves films). It sounds like Gunn is projecting.

He even made America the “bad guys” when he had them working with his Israel stand in to invade the nation of brown people.

I’d argue the film would have done better internationally if he embraced the “American way”. How can he expect other nations to embrace a classically American hero when even he won’t acknowledge those roots.

@Urubrodi - aquaman was like the 6th movie after mos, bvs, squad 2016 & the joss verison of justice league , the first Shazam and wonder woman 1 ...so the fact aquaman was a billion mover was actually surprising. And since justice league outside of the cameo at the end of Shazam 1 & Black Adam there's not been w movie with superman in it that went out internationally since Joss' justice league in 2017.

Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth international box office cume is $371.8M through Sunday. This makes the Scarlett Johansson-starrer the 4th biggest film of 2025 worldwide (behind Ne Zha 2, Lilo & Stitch and A Minecraft Movie). It is the 6th Jurassic title to cross $600M global, and in China has become the biggest Hollywood movie of 2025 with $71.8M to date.`

F1 international running cume is now $307.2M out of total $460.8M it made till now.

How to Train Your Dragon for its part made $338.2M internationally out of total $589M global.

@Martianhunter - It's almost as if Formula 1 is ridiculously popular internationally, dinosaur & dragon movies are huge with kids and families all over the world, and literally all of them have zero anti-american sentiment whatsoever.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 7/22/2025, 7:45 AM
@Martianhunter - Total ticket sales across all movies last years says nothing is doing as well anywhere as they once were but also it has ALWAYS been a thing that some films will do far better in America, like for instance Black Panther that had a relatively slow start outside America and ended still having a majority US BO total, others will do far batter overseas in terms of ths split.

Superman traditionaly has always done better in America, even MoS started with a near identical US/international ratio just that one dropped off a cliff faster domestic allowing overseas to eventualy overtake the American total.

This is just the way of things but also there were/are additional factors at play such as the opening week was a major heatwave across the entirity of Europe and if hot and sunny families will oft take advantage of a nearly free trip to a lake, park or coast to entertain the kids thus indoor costly activities always see a drop off. There was also the group stages of the Euro's Soccer game on the go with over 3hrs of major football on everyday and that is by far the biggest sport in Europe, that will always have an inpact too as may it being released just over a week before most schools broke up over here. Each of those things and any others like anti-American sentiment on their own wouldn't necessarily make HUGE impacts but if each dropped sales by say 2% then all those ind factors add up esp when it was str8 after a major Dino movie and only a couple weeks prior to an MCU movie.

@JayTweIve - That doesn't compute. All those are from US so if there was some anti American sentiment all of those would have reflected it. Hell I was sure this Jurassic world was gonna flop hard like transformer movies but that didn't happen. China is somehow watching that over Superman.

Also "Superman is not a known commodity in some places," I really doubt that. Superman, Batman and Spider-Man are most will known.
Martianhunter
Martianhunter - 7/22/2025, 8:21 AM
@Apophis71 - Agreed. I will also add that we are having a major global corporate layoff which is complicating this situation further.

But the good news is, if you look at the numbers, almost all movies are doing great.

At this point, studios need to reduce their budget. Sinking 300-400 million no longer is sustainable to make profit.

@Martianhunter - Been saying for ages they needed to pull back on budgets, don't care how big a movie is with the current BO trends no film should be having over 200million Budget, at a push maybe a few exceptions like end of saga Avengers movies or Avatar can get away with that but mostly blockbusters need to get down to around 150M so that a 450M WWBO will turn a profit as any more than that isn't a given if not considered a major event film.

@Martianhunter - "All those are from US so if there was some anti American sentiment all of those would have reflected it."

What???

I'm talking about the character of Superman factually being an american icon/the walking personification of Mr USA. The exact same way Captain America is, and look what happened with both of his solo movies. The first made nearly a hundred million less than the previous MCU movie despite both getting the same response from both critics and viewers, then despite Captain America having already appeared in the 1.5 billion hit Avengers and The Winter Soldier being universally acclaimed by critics and viewers....it still made less money than Guardians of the Galaxy which featured literal unknown characters.

This is all just basic common sense. Do you seriously believe for one second if Marvel made a movie called Captain Russia that was universally acclaimed by critics every american who went to see Captain America would rush out to see it? Because they factually wouldn't and it would bomb hard in the U.S. solely due to the name.

"Superman is not a known commodity in some places"

I never said this. But there's a key difference between being known and "does this character resonate with most people outside of the US?". He's not massively beloved here in the UK anywhere near to the level he is in America, and the UK is on the more popular side compared to non-english speaking countries like France, Norway etc. None of those countries overall are beyond excited to see a new Superman movie, yet if it was Batman or Spider-Man there would be no hesitation.

@JayTweIve - "Superman is not a known commodity in some places" this said by Gunn, mentioned in the article.

I do agree captain Russia would bomb hard in US, there is much more radicalization here than most of the other first world.

I'm not sure what point you are trying ti make. We literally have America in movies name but you clearly see internationally big numbers:

Captain America: The First Avenger earned $176.7 million in North America and $193.9 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $370.6 million. First movie, domestic and international are almost same.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier earned $259.8 million in North America and $454.7 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $714.4 million. So more international than domestic.

Captain America: Civil War grossed $408.1 million in the U.S. and Canada and $745.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $1.153 billion. So international went double in last two cap movies. Clearly other things are at play for Superman than us hate
