James Gunn Clarifies AVENGERS/GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Crossover Comments

As is so often the case, comments from James Gunn about the possible connections between The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy have been taken out of context or misinterpreted. The filmmaker has now taken to Facebook to clarify those remarks in a lengthy post.

Woke up the other day to two articles - one that announced I said the Avengers and the Guardians were never teaming up, another that said I said they were. These two articles were based ON THE SAME INTERVIEW (the podcast with Jeff Goldsmith). The truth is, I never said either of those things. I'm not going to tell anyone what happens to the Guardians, especially two or three movies down when who even knows if I'll be around anymore. Whatever the case, there's been a lot of anger around me - at me, from people defending me at others, and so on. And it's all people who love Marvel, like me, and just want to see awesome and amazing and moving stories.

There are many more important things going on in the world right now, but this is clogging up my feed, so let me do my best to set the record straight. Perhaps sometimes I say things imperfectly, unclearly, or inelegantly. All I've ever tried to say was the Guardians are an important part of the MCU, and they definitely share an existence with the Avengers and other characters in the MCU. But the week after the movie opened I walked into the Marvel offices, and I sat down with Kevin Feige and some of the other folks at Marvel. We had a long discussion about where the Guardians were headed and what was happening to them. I told them exactly what I wanted to do with the sequel to Guardians, and everyone was on board and excited. And, regarding the bigger picture, we all agreed on one thing, and that was to keep huge chunks of the Guardians separate from the Marvel heroes of earth, because they have a whole galaxy to explore. We wanted to use them as a way to make the MCU bigger, not smaller. We wanted to make sure they have their own mythos, as opposed to only one that is intertwined with the earthbound characters. They ARE connected, of course, but that connection would not be the purpose of their stories and fictional lives.

When I'm asked about the Guardians and their future, and whether they'll meet up with the Avengers I really don't have all that much to say, because some of it isn't decided yet, and I don't want to give away what is decided. So I speak in these general terms. They aren't things that I'm just saying on the spot, and they aren't things that have been decided on by me alone. But they are sometimes incredibly general, and that can lead to those words being taken in a lot of different ways. So, I'm sorry for all the different ways my words have been taken. Overall, we'll just have to wait and see where the Guardians go, who they meet, and what they do in the MCU. But know that I love them and will take the best care of them I possibly can for as long as I'm around.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, I'm getting a lot of questions about the AA batteries in Quill's Walkman, and how Quill's Walkman can survive for so long.

GUYS, THEY HAVE THE ALIEN TECHNOLOGY TO TRAVEL FASTER THAN LIGHT BETWEEN PLANETS, I think they can figure out an alternative power source for the Walkman, and they likely also have technology to slow the degradation to the tape and player. This seems obvious to me.

Please be respectful in the comments below or I'll have to block you. Sorry ahead of time.

Happy holidays, James

It's this type of fan interaction which really singles James Gunn out as a writer and director, and getting clarification like this is always appreciated (even if it shouldn't have been necessary for him to provide it in the first place). After all, do people really expect him to turn around and confirm plans for an Avengers/Guardians of the Galaxy crossover years before the release of both Avengers: Infinity War and the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel? It appears so, but here's hoping that this will bring an end to the unnecessary vitriol spewed at the guy who helmed one of 2014's BEST movies...

A GoTG/Avengers crossover WILL happen. I mean, Drax, Gamora and The Collector either have or will have connections to Thanos. There's no way Thanos doesn't come in and destroy Xandar and take the Power Stone and [frick] up Knowhere as well. Thanos will [frick]ing OWN Phase 3.

So basically this just confirms that there never should've been a "controversy" in the first place, if only people could read and use common sense. I'll reiterate what I said in a previous article:

All that I ever took from his comments was that he never wanted his Guardians movies to turn into another Iron Man 2 situation, which basically only existed to show off how interconnected it was with the larger MCU. He wants to continue to focus on his own movies and characters, and he'll let the fans debate about if/when/how the Guardians will ever crossover with the Avengers.

We should be thankful he's taking this approach, because the alternative would be obsessing over connecting this with the other properties, making everything into fan service and constant little winks and references, and neglecting to focus on what made Guardians of the Galaxy so great - the characters. More specifically, THOSE characters. Not the Avengers, not the Nova Corps. The Guardians of the Galaxy. I don't think it's such a stretch to expect more of the same in a sequel.

first of all... im not reading that.
secondly... youre insane if you dont think avengers and GOTG are not crossing over in infinity war
its the infinity war... it involves the whole universe. the guardians and nova corps will be there.

Also, James Gunn is awesome on Facebook and Twitter. He directly responds to several fan questions, and even has conversations with them for a few minutes. And he takes the time to clarify his recent comments in a long-ass Facebook post. The dude cares. Guardians of the Galaxy is in safe hands.

IF the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers meet it should be "Marvel's: Infinity Wars."

If the two are held in the same regard it's a disservice and undermining to the GotG!! Would the Avengers appear in "Guardians of the Galaxy: Infinity Wars"??? NOPE!

Need to factor in The Inhumans as well. I just want to see Thanos grab Black Bolt up like a child and BB doing his best death metal impression all over Thanos face.

Boom

Please, just stop trying to answer everyone. Russos were no names just like Gunn, and I never hear them letting this new found fame get to their heads (at least not in public). Russos were humble, kept to themselves, and didn't make a circus of their work (which I feel the MCU at its current state is undeserving of).

Gunn is a really down to earth guy. I think it's awesome how he interacts with fans and other people on social media. You can tell that he's really passionate about his work and does the best possible job he can. I'm very excited to see what he does with GOTG2!!

James Gunn seems to have too much free time, if he keeps posting these long texts so often, lol.

Why doesnt he focus on his work and let Feige clarify the info himself, if he wants to?
Sandstorm
Sandstorm - 12/23/2014, 12:10 PM
To the general audience who doesn't follow these things like us GOTG was a movie with franchise potential obviously.

To the MCU fanboys and fangirls it was a lead up to Marvel's infinity War Saga but Feige and Gunn know what's up.

Guys.. Marvel is building a universe. Notice there is a thor 3 and a GOTG 2 etc.

It's not a straight up saga or just one big movie altogether. I guarantee you if GOTG 2 is popular then there will be more sequels after that.

damn It's not that hard to understand.

hey, i enjoyed gotg. it was just dumb fun. turn your brain off, laugh at the jokes, look at the 'splosions-kinda deal. nothing wrong with that

@Jollem

the same reasons you just gave for guardians being mediocre you have listed many times as things that make tasm 2, ninja turtles and transformers 4 great.

maybe instead of turning your brain off you should turn it on once and a while.

I was making a joke on your joke. That's the perfect type of comment that is easily misconstrued by certain folks as fightin' words.
