James Gunn Says GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 "Not Subservient To The AVENGERS"

Director James Gunn told MTV that the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel will focus on "future cosmic movies" and not setting up Avengers: Infinity War Part 1. Come check it out.

In the past, several of Marvel's films devoted screen time to setting up The Avengers. Which is great, as they helped establish the Marvel cinematic universe, which later led to the success of Joss Whedon's The Avengers. Last month, Kevin Feige announced Marvel's next big event after Avengers: Age of Ultron will be a two-part Avengers: Inifinity War (May 4, 2018 & May 3, 2019). Knowing that Thanos will play a large part in that led many fans to wonder how much of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (May 5 2017) will be devoted to setting up the Infinity War.

MTV: How much freedom do you have for “Guardians 2″ when the future of the Marvel Universe is planned out two years beyond it?

JAMES GUNN: I don’t feel beholden to that stuff at all. I think it’s really about the Guardians and what they are doing. We’re not subservient to the Avengers. “Guardians 2″ is not a movie that’s made to move toward “Infinity War.” It’s something that’s made to move toward future cosmic movies, so I don’t feel that that is something that affects me that much.

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, featuring Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. James Gunn is the director and the story is by Nicole Perlman and James Gunn, with screenplay by James Gunn.

I don't really need a Guardians/Avengers cross over anyway.

The Guardians were best when they were just their own thing somewhere out in space.

I personally don't want to see the Guardians and the Avengers work together in the same movie

So Marvel have learn their lesson about not doing a movie just as a trailer for another bigger movie just like they did with Iron Man 2. NEAT! That's why Marvel Studios is awesome, they learn from their mistakes.

Guardians > Avengers

There are probably some restrictions though. In a universe that big, there can't not be. It is a long long way from the other movies though so Gunn surely has more freedom than some of Marvel's other directors.

Awesome. I think it's great how Guardians of the Galaxy really had nothing to do with the MCU movies that came right before and after it (aside from Thanos' presence). I'm a fan of having this franchise stand alone from the rest of the bunch for a little while (but can we have a banished Hulk join them for the sequel, pretty please?).

I'm absolutely in LOVE with the idea of how Star-Lord could potentially interact with Tony Stark. Or Rocket and Groot interacting with Thor and Banner. Or Gamora interacting with Black Widow. There's something about knowing that these characters exist in the same universe that really makes it feel special.

As it shouldn't. Teasing future movies is all well and good, but that shouldn't be the main point. The main point should be further exploring your characters and putting them into new situations.

That said, the Guardians damn well better cross over with The Avengers in one or both of The Infinity War films. Thanos is too big a villain to just fight against one team, regardless of title.

Great news. The GotG films would be held back by restrictions like that in all honesty.

Even though he said this I'm gonna say it now the Guardians will show up in part I or II even if it's for a brief moment that's the type of thing they do.

Of course Gunn will get a good deal of freedom with Guardians. Guardians of the Galaxy was their biggest solo debut EVER. It was bigger than the original Iron Man, bigger than all of the Phase 1 films, and bigger than every other Marvel Studios film outside of The Avengers and Iron Man 3.

So they are going to let this be a massive entity on its own for a little bit. There is a reason they took Thor: Ragnarok off of the May 5th, 2017 release and put GOTG2 there. Because May is the "big summer tent-pole" weekend that Marvel Studios likes, and they put their BIGGEST properties out on that weekend like The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron, and Civil War.

Guardians 1 destroyed Thor: The Dark World, so naturally Guardians 2 is going to take precedent over Thor 3 and get the bigger/better release.

GOTG 2 is easily looking at $1 Billion worldwide, it'll be their biggest '2nd film' just as GOTG was their biggest solo debut.

THEN for Infinity War they will obviously cross the(at that point) $1 Billion+ Guardians property with the $2 Billion+ Avengers property and proceed to make ALL THE MONEYS

I'm actually really hoping they do crossover and the Guardians are included in the infinity war movies, it would be a waste if they didn't crossover, it would be cool to see all the characters together and I think it would be cool to see Quill back on earth at some point....

But, Guardians was awesome, and I can't [frick]ing wait for more Thanos!!

It's most likely gonna set up a Captain Marvel, Inhumans, Nova corps, and possibly a Silver Surfer Movie if the Fox movie flops and the rights revert while Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is still in preproduction..

He doesn't have to be beholden to Infinity War because all they really need to do is a scene with Thanos thirsting for some infinity gems. They can easily set up the rest of the infinity stones elsewhere. I bet Thor 3 has way more to do setting up Infinity War then Guardians 2.

At the end of the day, I trust what Marvel does. Rewatching Guardians and it's still just [frick]ing fantastic.

If this had come out when I was a kid I'd have died of joy.

That's good to hear.

Let the cosmic side of the MCU contine to develop without being bound by the Avengers movies.
