James Gunn Says GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 Has A More Diverse Soundtrack

While it'll be tough to outdo the unforgettable soundtrack of Awesome Mix Vol. 1, director James Gunn has teased a more diverse and recognizable set of tunes for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2...

While the first installment of Guardians of the Galaxy has a host of unforgettable moments, the film's soundtrack, Awesome Mix Vol. 1, is definitely one of the highlights. From Blue Swede's "Hooked on a Feeling" to Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love", the compilation was a massive hit, becoming the first soundtrack album in history consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the Billboard 200 chart. With that in mind, it'll be quite a hurdle for the second film's soundtrack - Awesome Mix Vol. 2 - to top the first, director James Gunn has teased a much more diverse offering of music this time around.

"The second soundtrack is great,” said Gunn in an interview with Super Interssante. “I think it’s a more diverse soundtrack. I think the first soundtrack [had] a bunch of songs that maybe you heard but didn’t know the name of the song - you didn’t know the name of the singer. In this one, we have some really incredibly famous songs and then some songs that people have never heard. So, it’s a much more diverse soundtrack.”

While the music is up for a big change, there's one thing that isn't, and that's the film's connection to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gunn was quizzed about the sequel holding any connections whatsoever to the MCU, which he answered quite definitively. "No," Gunn said with a laugh. "Right now the Guardians are their own little thing. I mean we had the first movie, this movie takes place two months after the first movie. They are off dealing with the cosmic side of the universe. They don't really know or think about Earth. I mean, Quill probably does because he doesn't want to go back, but the rest of them don't, and so they're in their own little pocket of the universe right now."

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Looking forward to this movie a lot. The first one has become on of my favourite CBMs so far, and I have faith in Gunn to at least hold that level with the sequel.

But right now I'm actually more excited about Homecoming, which is something I didn't see happening at all not a year ago.

Who knows what the first Ragnarok trailer will do...?

@Kyos - I'm excited for both, but Guardians won the trailer battle for me.

@MattBellissimo - Agreed. I love Spidey but after seeing the GOTG trailer i almost felt sorry for homecoming having to follow it. i know i'll enjoy them both though, so it's a moot point really.

@MattBellissimo - I guess it has something to do with the fact that I felt a serious Spidey fatigue after TASM2, and I initially was more or less against rebooting the character that soon - even in the MCU. But Holland has won me over, and what we've seen of his performance together with the tone of the trailer, the high school stuff, villainous Keaton... it just feels good to be excited about Spidey again.

I love the MCU GOTG, but Spidey is one of the greatest heroes we have, and to get the impression that they're doing him justice in a way that totally clicks with me - so nice! :D

After the first movie, I admit I went on a 70s music binge, compiling as many of the beloved songs of the era as I could. In the end I probably had enough music to fit 10 CDs. So I was pleasantly surprised that the recent teaser used a song I did not already have.

Man,listening to hooked on a feeling and smoking some bud is priceless. I hope we get some awesome songs in vol 2.

As for the "everything is connected" I'll just laugh 😂

@sixthsense - That entire first soundtrack is literal nostalgia pressed into record format. "Fox on the Run" in the new trailer also cemented (for me) that this one will probably live up to the first.

@sixthsense - If it weren't connected, then we wouldn't be seeing them show up in Infinity War. And I'm sure the growth they go through in this movie will be reflected in the Russos' movie.

It's hard enough to make one movie. But making two or three a year while everyone is looking over everyone else's shoulders, it's impressive that it's as connected as it is.

@grif - the soundtrack is the most importante part of the movie. I have my vinyl soundtrack collection to prove it. :)

the trailer didn't do much for me, which is quite surprising given how much i praise the first movie.

i found drax and baby groot to be annoying. the last thing i want from a movie is to be annoyed.

gotg sadly has been bumped to the bottom of my mcu anticipation list, and homecoming took its place.

ragnarok is gonna be the best mcu movie so far! im calling it.

And still we have seen nothing from Infinity War. Give us a concept art. And I'm glad to know that about the soundtrack as it was one of the best parts of the first movie.

And four Marvel films come out before it!
