Ron Perlman Still Wants HELLBOY 3 "We Owe It To The Fans"

In an interview with IGN while promoting his new series Hand of God, Ron Perlman talks Hellboy 3, whether Hellboy could be on TV, and calls Iron Man a poser.

In case you didn't already know, Ron Perlman for the past few months has been on a campaign of sorts in hopes to get Hellboy 3 greenlit. Perlman starred as the title character in the first 2 Hellboy films as well as put the makeup for the character back on for a Make-A-Wish kid. Recently IGN interviewed Ron while he was promoting his new Amazon series Hand of God talking about Hellboy 3, if Hellboy could make it on TV, what makes Hellboy an interesting character, and more.

IGN: Is Hellboy a character you think could be resurrected on TV?

Perlman: Anything’s possible. It won’t be me playing him. The only time I would ever go back to do Hellboy is to do the third and final instalment of the trilogy. Which is why I’ve been yapping away and opening my big f**king mouth on Twitter and all that sh*t.

IGN: We love it when you do that.

Perlman: It seem that way. People encourage me – “Yeah come on Ron. Be an asshole some more. Come one, come on. You do it so well.” Guillermo [Del Toro] shared with me what the third and final instalment would look like and it’s incredibly theatrical, it’s highly charged, it’s got huge dynamic to it and it’s very cinematic. And on top of that it’s the deal we made with the public by making instalments one and two. Clearly we’re not finished. We’re not finished until we find out whether this guy’s is going to meet his destiny or whether he’s going to find a way to avoid it. So that’s what the third instalment would be and that’s why I got on my soapbox saying ‘We owe it to the fans and it’s essential that we finish this – it’s too good an idea to not do.’ And so I will now shut my mouth and leave it up to the gods and the fates.

IGN: He says he needs £120m to make it and no one is prepared to give it to him.

Perlman: That’s a small budget compared to some of the big tent-pole movies that are being made at the studios.

IGN: Do you have a favourite of the first two movies?

Perlman: No. The first one… it took them eight years to get made so there was a fantasy element… the whole experience was like a ‘pinch-me’ moment. None of us could believe ‘Holy Sh*t we’re not only making this movie but we’re making it with Ron Perlman who no one has ever heard of before, he’s definitely not a movie star.’ And it had a kind of aura around it of magical realism. And then the second one was like ‘Holy Sh*t we’re at it again.’ So they both are very special to me. I thought the storytelling in both was great. I love the team. I love Selma [Blair], Doug [Jones] Jeff Tambor. It goes without saying what a joy it is to be alongside Guillermo on anything we do.

IGN: Why is Hellboy such a beloved character?

Perlman: Because he’s a slob. He’s like the anti-superhero. He’s the anti-hero version of the superhero. Back to pizza – he’d much rather stay in his room and watch Marx Brothers movies and play with his cats and eat pizza than go out and save the world. Which makes him like you and me – just a f**king slob. So he’s a reluctant superhero. He’s not true blue, square-jawed, boring, f**king… I’m not going to mention names. You know who you are, Iron Man, posing as an interesting guy. Sorry, I didn’t mean to go there. Sorry Robert – you’re the f**king best.
