RUMOR: A Sequel To Ryan Coogler's SINNERS Is In Development At Warner Bros.

Though we don't have much to go on just yet, a rumor doing the rounds online is claiming that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a sequel to Ryan Coogler's Sinners...

After the movie exceeded all expectations at the box office, we're hearing that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a sequel to Ryan Coogler's Sinners.

The rumor comes our way via reliable scooper MTTSH, who simply says: "Sinners 2 is happening."

If you haven't watched Sinners yet, spoilers follow.

Though the movie tied up most of its plot threads and didn't necessarily leave itself open for a follow-up, the mid-credits scene did bring two key characters into modern times.

The sequence jumps forward to 1992, as we learn that Sammie went against his father's wishes and left Mississippi to start a successful career as a bluesman in Chicago. After a gig, Sammy is told that two old friends are waiting to see him, and in walks Stack and Mary, the only surviving vampires.

Stack tells his cousin that Smoke spared his life (well, un-death) on the condition that he left Sammie alone and never pursued him. Stack offers to turn Sammie into a vampire, but the old man tells him that he's "seen enough of this place."

Stack and Mary get up to leave, and Sammie tells his cousin that, even though he's still haunted by what happened, opening night all those years ago was the greatest time of his life. Stack agrees, as it was the last time he saw his brother, the last time he saw the sun, and "the only time I ever truly felt free."

If a sequel does happen, we assume it would follow the no-doubt hedonistic adventures of vampire Stack and Mary.

Warner Bros. recently announced that the acclaimed vampire drama is set to debut on Digital devices, including Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV, Fandango at Home, and more, on June 3, before arriving on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD in high definition and standard definition from participating digital retailers on July 8.

Digital, 4K UHD and Blu-ray contain the following special features:

  • Dancing with the Devil: The Making of “Sinners” – featurette (32:35)
Journey with director Ryan Coogler as he makes his most personal and powerful film yet. Featuring Michael B. Jordan and an all-star cast, filmed on location in IMAX, “Sinners” is an original genre-bending experience unlike any other.
  • Thicker than Blood: Becoming the Smokestack Twins – featurette (10:45)
Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler take us through the development, creation and portrayal of the Smokestack Twins, revealing how make-up, costumes, and visual effects come together to support these seamless performances.
  • Blues in the Night: The Music of “Sinners” – featurette (13:44)
Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson explores the musical landscape of Sinners, including the iconic sounds of the Delta Blues, and the creation and recording of the unique and inspired performances written for the film.
  • Spirits in the Deep South – featurette (7:58)
Prof. Yvonne Chireau explores the backdrop of Hoodoo in the deep south and how its beliefs and traditions in spirituality, ancestors, the hereafter, and defense against evil inform the world and characters of “Sinners.”
  • The Wages of Sin: The Creature FX of “Sinners” – featurette (10:51)
Creature Makeup FX Designer Mike Fontaine reveals the secrets behind the supernatural horrors that terrorize the Juke, Ryan Coogler’s fresh take on vampires, and the various gore and blood effects used throughout the film.
  • Deleted Scenes (18:41)
Includes deleted and/or extended scenes for a more immersive experience.

Sinners is still playing in theaters, and has proven to be a box office juggernaut, taking in another $9.1 million over the Memorial Day weekend. This brings its global total to $339 million, making it one of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time.

Coogler recently shared an emotional letter thanks audiences for showing up for Sinners.

“Eternal Gratitude. My heart is bursting with it. I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see SINNERS. Who decided to drive to see the film in different formats. Who bought popcorn and a drink, booked a sitter and carpooled, and stood in the lobby afterwards and talked and made a friend. Who changed their work schedules. Who saw the film in groups. I want to thank you all who watched more than once, who recommended the film to others, both in person and on social media or on your text message chains. I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters. We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can.

I believe in cinema. I believe in the theatrical experience. I believe it is a necessary pillar of society. It's why me and so many of my colleagues have dedicated our lives to the craft. We don't get to do what we do if you don't show up. The global theatrical audience has allowed me to dream, find a career and build a more sustainable life for me and my family. And the only way that I know how to thank you for that, is by continuing to mine my personal human experience and my relationships for more stories to bring to you in cinematic language. To see your response to the film has reinvigorated me and many others who believe in this art form.”

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

“You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home.”

Written and directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Coogler, Sinners stars Jordan (the Black Panther and Creed franchises) in a dual role, joined by Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee, True Grit), Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Wunmi Mosaku (Passenger), Jayme Lawson (The Woman King), Omar Miller (True Lies), Miles Caton, and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods).

The film is produced by Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Ryan Coogler. The executive producers are Ludwig Göransson, Will Greenfield and Rebecca Cho.

Spoiler Alert: It is not.

Could a sequel to 'Sinners' be made? Sure. But since Ryan Coogler has complete control over the property, and he clearly made a self contained story (like 'Joker', cough cough), there will never be an authorized sequel to 'Sinners'.

@Lisa89 - don't be so sure. I don't think it should get one either, but never underestimate the power of the almighty 💲💲. If they came to Coogler with an idea he felt he could develop and work with, he might be convinced.

@MarkCassidy - I don’t think Coogler wants to be the next Todd Phillips.

@MarkCassidy - If you think about it, ‘Sinners’ already has a built it sequel with the mid-credits scene.

@Lisa89 - I thought his deal allowed them to option a sequel but the rights revert back to him after 25 years.

I can see them building off that mid credit scene though! Vampire(s) in the Bronx! ;)

@Lisa89 - Huh. I guess Mary and Stack's lives through the decades WOULD have a lot of fodder for a follow-up...

Lisa89 - 5/30/2025, 11:00 AM
@asherman93 - I’m suggesting he already gave us the follow up (in that sequence) and shared everything he wanted to share about these characters. That’s the end.

@Lisa89 - They shouldnt make a direct sequel but they did have those Native Americans chasing down vampires during the middle of the movie they can CERTAINLY expand on. I'd love to see THAT movie in the mythology!

@bobevanz - rumors pay the bills nowadays. wake up pull something out of your ass and print it. people click , people talk and people hype. then when the actual product comes out disappointment is abound because 90 percent of the rumors were false and BS. then people come here and whine and complain. then articles are posted to stir the pot and keep haters hating. rinse repeat.

@AllsNotGood -

They're not very diverse.

And if his characters were White, liberals would acknowledge they are B movie shlock.

But they feel obligated to praise them as being better than they are, so their peers don't perceive them as being racist.

TheRationalNerd
TheRationalNerd - 5/30/2025, 9:21 AM
I think they should leave it where its at. No need to dampen the franchise unless they explore the Navajo Rangers or other supernatural elements.
TheShellyMan

@TheRationalNerd - Yeah, this movie doesn't need a sequel.
UnderBelly
UnderBelly - 5/30/2025, 10:18 AM
@TheRationalNerd - I do think they can expand on it like you said. Not exactly like a sequel, but like you said, explore the Navajo, or even the KKK in that era with the supernatural backdrop or go over to Ireland and expand on the story Remmick explain about his own village/town, or something akin to it.

Cooogler won't need to be heavily involved, but could flesh out the world, leaving the original story unaffected by a poor sequel.....like Joker did with it's follow up.

DocSpock
DocSpock - 5/30/2025, 9:37 AM

A sequel isn't needed, but the studio smells more money. It's inevitable. I'll watch it because I liked this movie. I agree with others; a prequel would be more appropriate. We will probably get that too. Money, money, money.

Until they milk it dry and ruin it. That's what they do.

Prequel, take it to Ireland! I'm sure Coogler will do enough research to respect the Irish culture or if he doesn't feel confident enough he could collaborate with an Irish director or producer.

I feel like a sequel might spoil an already great self contained movie. 👀
