Robert Downey Jr.: Iron Man 2 Role Was Daunting

The seemingly cool, calm and collected Robert Downey Jr. confesses to being nervous about reprising the role of Tony Stark/Iron Man in Iron Man 2.

Having met actor Robert Downey Jr., I can say from experience that the man is one cool customer. Downey Jr. entered the quiet press room at the San Diego Comic-Con with boisterous bravado, sporting a crazy pair of neon green sneakers and a huge smile. He was Tony Stark incarnate. Or, rather, Tony Stark is Robert Downey Jr. At least, the same cocky-yet-playful confidence of Tony Stark comes from the actor himself: it's no act.

So, I was surprised when I read a recent article where RDJ confesses to having some trepidation about returning to the role that has catapulted him to the top of the Hollywood short-list of leading men. RDJ said:

"I've never been in a sequel, and it's very daunting because I feel the expectation of the millions of people who watched the first one and enjoyed it as well as told me that it was a little different than your usual genre picture and that they expected us to not screw it up.

"So, I actually have taken Iron Man 2 probably more seriously than any movie I've ever done. I'll never be here again. I'll never be 44-years-old making a sequel, making this and that, so I'm really kind of just running on gratitude right now."

RDJ has gotta be on top of the world right now! He goes from trying to score drugs in the worst neighborhood in LA to topping one of the best CBM movies of all times within 10 years! Congrats, bro!

@Brent: Jealous!

he was in Us Marshalls a sequel to the fugitive. So he's incorrect, but since he wasn't in the first one then i can kind of understand what he means.

I couldn't live with out the 80's! Great article. I'm surprised as well that he would be nervous. The character and person are interchangable. Just tell RDJ to be himself and wear a costume while he does it. =o)

Yea that US Marchall's thing doesn't count. I loved him in Tropic Thunder. OMG..Tom Cruise was 2 ****n funny n that flick. He might actually be in another sequel especially if Sherlock HOlmes does well.

@orod: Yeah, he wasn't in The Fugitive and there was no The Fugitive 2, so I think he's clear on that one.

@tea: Holy frak was Tropic Thunder funny! It takes BIG BALLS for RDJ to wear black-face like that. Fraking Stiller really got on my nerves though. One of my favorite things wasn't until the credits when they show that kid cartwheeling off of the bridge and the shot freezes on him with pop art graphics. I laughed so hard!

That Simple Jack shite was sooooooo annoying! Oh, yeah, and I thought it was good for Tom Cruise to poke fun at himself since the rest of the world already is. And, Mathew Mic-con-a-hey (too lazy to look up the correct spelling) in anything is a bonus!

Did anyone see the Soloist? It looked like it was going to be good but I didn't want to go to the theater for a drama.

Yeah Robert is just perfect for the role. I just can't wait to see how he interacts with the rest of the Avengers cast.

It's gonna be epic!

"Running on gratitude"... lol For somebody whos supposed to come across as cocky, I find that statement to be rather humble.

I think what he's running on is greatness. Talent, creativity and skill. This man has earned everything he's gotten. He handled Tony Stark with sensitivity, inteligence and reverence, which is all one can ask for.

I have the feeling that Iron Man 2 will out perform every other movie next year, and it will probably top the first one in every category

Well Truth be told...I never liked RDJ, he reminded me off one of those guys who danced in the high school plays...and when it was announced that he was picked for Ironman..I got as nutty as Lee does about Jensen Ackles for Cap...but I gotta tell ya..I was really wrong on this one..I could not think of anyone currently who could have done a better job playing Tony Stark...so Skull fesses up and eats a lil crow....

@Gweedo Read the summaries on Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB before you go if you don't want to be dissapointed. The movie's about a schitzophrenic celloist befriended by a newspaper reporter, what'd you think it was gonna be - Iron Man one and a half lol? The cello shoots rockets? Was a beautiful film imo.

He's just a [frick]ing cool guy who really gets the big picture... would love to sit down and have a conversation with him.

@supermarioworldE RDJ didn't say he's having problem with it dummy ! It's just, he has taken the role SERIOUSLY.

Have you read the article ?.. guess not

@bropuos: You hit on what's so great about Downey as an artist: You can't tell when he's acting. I suspect that skill may have led to his personal demons and fed into his role of 'Kirk Lazarus" also. And as another poster noted, it was obvious from early on that there was something special about him. 'Weird Science' showed his comic talents, and 'Less Than Zero' displayed just how deep he was capable of going into a role. When I read that he'd been cast as Stark, I had one of those head-smacking "duh!" moments where I couldn't believe I didn't think of it myself.
