Ror Reviews: Iron Man 2

Great reviews, mixed reviews, outright horrible reviews, what the Hell is going on with Iron Man 2? Is it the tent-pole sequel we all hoped it would be? Click and I'll tell ya what I think. I'll keep it mainly spoiler free but I do go into some detail about the ending so be warned.

Review Opinion

On the way to the cinema whilst chatting to my friends it dawned on me that Iron Man 2 may well be the most anticipated CBM ever among comic book fans. I say that because the first Iron Man is frequently cited as the "right" way to make a CBM and this is a sequel to that right way..but its also the first Marvel movie since both Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk paved the way for the studio's unprecedented cross pollination of Marvel characters leading up to The Avengers. And since super hero sequels tend to be at least as good, frequently better that their predecessors, Tony Stark's second flight had to deliver..right? The Answer is yes, and no.

We begin right after the end of the last movie, while Stark reveals to the world that he is Iron Man, Ivan Vanko is hard at work on something that will make the billionaire's life very difficult indeed. Vanko is the son of one of Howard Stark's former associates and he blames the Stark family(being Tony) for the ruination of his father(to the moron from the Daily Mirror..THATS WHY:) So he uses a similar tech to Stark's reactor to power his own set of devastating whips and goes to pay Mr Stark a little visit. While this is going on, Stark is summoned to a tribunal to try to force him to turn over "The Iron Man weapon" to the government. Here we are introduced to Stark's rival, Justin hammer and re introduced to Pepper Potts and James "Rhodey" Rhodes(albeit being played by a different actor this time). Stark refuses of course but after Vanko sends him a clear message while Tony is showing off at Monaco, Stark's detractors have more ammo to go after him with, or as Vanko puts it, "When you make God bleed, people stop believing in them". So this sets up our story. Stark, under the dual pressure of the government breathing down his neck and the realization that his suit is slowly poisoning him, starts to lose control and both Pepper and Rhodey decide to step in in different ways..and they aren't the only ones watching. Justin Hammer strikes up an alliance with Vanko and a new "assistant" in the form of the lovely Natalie Rushmore may not be all that she seems.

I think you probably all know the story at this point but I won't go into any more detail there. On to the performances. Rock solid pretty much across the board. Just like last time Robert Downey Jr proves that he is the single greatest casting choice in CBM history. He is charming and just the right side of arrogant to be hilarious. Mickey Rourke is great as Whiplash but he suffers from the pacing(more on that later) as does Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer. These 2 actually threaten to run away with the movie when they share scenes and both are quite sympathetic villains..Rockwell in particular plays Hammer as a jealous, slimy prick..but he isn't evil. Don Cheadle is ok as Rhodey(War Machine). He's a great actor but there is just something lacking in his performance here. Gwyneth Paltrow is on form too, as is John Favreau himself, expanding Happy Hogan's role to action territory. Scarjo silences her nay sayers(me included!) with a sexy, kick ass turn as Black Wid..oh excuse, me Natasha Romanov. For some reason she is never refereed to as her codename even though we know it, they know it and they know we know it. Baffling. SAM MOTHER[frick]IN JACKSON has an expanded role here as Nick Fury. He does his job but really doesn't make much of an impression. This is partly because he really doesn't get much to say! As good as the script is, sometimes it just lets certain characters and certain scenes down. For example the quickfire back and forths between Stark and Pepper grate after they hold every conversation they have in the movie that way...but we're not on to the bad stuff yet! The action is as you would expect, [frick]ing awesome. The Monaco scene being the highlight, but a throw-down between Stark and Rhodey while suited up and a scene involving Widow in all her Lucha Libre style glory are close contenders.

Ok, now the bad. One of the major criticisms leveled at this film has been the pacing, and in all honesty I agree. Not nearly to the extent of that "unwatchable" rubbish spouted by that hack from The Mirror(Think he'l thank me for 2 mentions?:) but it is noticeable, particularly after such a strong start and then seeing in the third act scenes that so clearly belong in the second. It might sound like nit picking but for me the flow and tempo of the narrative is as important as anything else. And then, I'm not going to beat around the bush with this, the ending sucks. Not everything about the end, just the very end. After establishing Whiplash as a very real threat to Stark he gets a 20 second skirmish with both Iron Man and Rhodey(thats right, 2 heroes, one villain..isn't it supposed to be the other way around) and then promptly vanishes! Sure they both take out a few drones in spectacular fashion first but cmon! I understand that Fav and his editors have to adhere to a running time, but maybe one less scene of Stark walking around Pepper's office with a box of strawberries while she talks on the phone would have made some more room for your main antagonist!

Some of you may feel that I'm being overly critical but this stuff matters. It matters in every movie be it CBM, Swedish art house, cartoon, documentary. And my annoyances with the faults are amplified here because of how much my expectations were raised. But, that being said, I in no way want to imply that this is a bad movie. Its a great movie, its a great CBM, Hell it really is a great sequel. Its just not AS great a sequel as I was hoping for.

Oh, and as for the easter eggs. Caps shield is, imo, no way the one we will be seeing him wield in his movie. Its a lump of plastic used as a nod to Cap is all. And even if you have seen the after credits Thor nod, its something else on the big screen, I was almost stopping people from leaving as the credits rolled!

Small update, sorry but I totally forgot to talk about the humor. This film is a riot. One thing nobody can ever fault Fav on is his comic timing, of course it helps when you have guys like RDJ and Rockwell on board. I really did get a few proper belly laughs from this, in fact its a funnier film than most comedies tend to be these days. Highlight is by far Justin Hammers little dance as he enters the stage..gold!

Awesome review ROR! (be sure to check out my review below as well, lol!) I pretty much agree with everything you say here - I'm glad to see that someone else got pissed off with the Stark/Pepper stuff! I sat there wishing the strawberry scene would just hurry up and finish already!!!

Completely agree with you about Cap's shield as well! Coulson's reaction though definitely points to Cap having a round shield in WWII IMO..!

i kinda hope they do just give him the round shield in WWII. i'm ready to see him bouncing that thing off walls. i wouldn't miss the triangle shield in the least bit.

Nice job, Ror! Sucks to have to wait to watch this, although I will be waiting until week two and catching a morning matinee. No crowds at movies for me.

Great review, not that I expected any less :)

And thanks for the minimal spoilage Ror. I can't stand them, I've already had the after-credits scene pretty much spoiled, but I hope it doesn't bring me down too much when I see it.

Cheers folks. Yeah I wanted to keep the spoilers minimal but I really couldn't discus my disappointment with the end without going into what happens a bit.

Tea, I didn't! I actually forgot to look out for em. Is it supposed to be something visual or spoken?

Have you seen it Magic8? And I don't differentiate, they are all movie no matter what they are based on, they all have actors, plots, scripts, directors, and if one nor all of those things suck then they suck whether the film is based on a comic or a roller coaster. This one didn't.

RDJ is very versatile actually. His own personality creeps into Stark I'm sure, but thats how Stark should be played!

EditNinja - 4/29/2010, 5:51 PM
Well written review. RDJ owns this movie.
@magic8 - that's just it - He's perfectly cast, RDJ is just the right actor/character/man to play Stark. It's hard to imagine anyone better to be Iron Man.

MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 4/29/2010, 6:01 PM
Of course I differentiate because they are different genres. I wouldn't compare the two, but at the end of the day they are both still movies, and both good ones.

Tea, maybe there was something on one of the screens at the tribunal? By the way, how [frick]ing awesome was Sam Rockwell?
ngu13
ngu13 - 4/29/2010, 6:15 PM
@TEA ... THE TRAILER WHEN PEPPER THROWS HIS HELMET OUT OF THE PLAIN WAS NOT IN THE FILM ....SAME I THOUGHT HAMMER WOULD HAVE A RING ON .. MUST GO WATCH AGAIN ...AND THE IRONMAN POSONA IS WEAK COMPAIRED TO THE COMICS

ngu13 - 4/29/2010, 6:28 PM
MAYBE IN THE CUT SCENES ON BLU RAY IT WILL EXPLAIN ..BUT I WISH THEY DID MORE WITH WHIPLASH AT THE END ....HOPEFULY IRONMAN 3 .. HE WILL COME BACK WITH ANOTHER FOE FOR IRONMAN HIS ARMOR WAS WICKED ..... BUT I WANT A MARK2 ... THAT LOOKED THE DOGS BOLLOX IN DAY LIGHT .. I WAS IMPREST WITH THAT SCENE FOR SOME REASON

Fav said that it just made more sense in the edit to reveal Stark for the first time when he comes out of the suit at the expo..I liked that "you complete me" bit too though!

Tea, well he did catch that car in the first one..but yeah, some more showcasing of his strength would have been nice. As for hammer, I know it sounds strange but part of me was actually rooting for him! At the end of the day I think he really just wanted to be Tony's fwend. Awwww.

Finally! An honest fan! Usually fan reviews are always possitive because they were too busy jizzing in their pants at the sight of their childhood hero on screen to anyalyze the movie effectively. You on the other hand, Ror, gave us a review based on active viewing. Nice job.

What about the Hulk reference.. Wasn't there supposes to be some noticable reference to Hulk towards the end?

I'm fresh from the late showing so I'm still digesting the film (and still getting over "the hammer" - it's THE hammer, not something that looks a bit like it, but straight-out-of-the-comics Mjolnir!!!), but Ror's review sums up my feelings pretty well too.

Black Widow was ace - defo want to see more of her (in every sense of the word).

War Machine took a while to grow, but he definitely had an arc and by the end was the War Machine we know. Cheadle likewise seemed to grow in confidence and by the end seemed to be much more at ease in the role.

Rockwell is a god. Nuff said.

RDJ was RDJ. Ditto.

Pepper and Hogan's expanded roles worked well - not too much, not too little - just about right Jon - any more would be overkill imo.

Rourke's role did feel short-changed by mostly leaving him out of the middle section of the movie, so I hope there's more of him in the extended cut.

No references at all to the Ten Rings as far as I could tell. If there was, it was too subtle for me.

Cap's shield 'skeleton' was, I assume, a prototype - or perhaps the remnant or mock-up of the original they'd reverse engineered. The specifics are irrelevant - the fact that this was a blatant link to Cap was significant enough. There was also a Captain America comic in the chest - didn't catch the issue.

Just writing this, going over the things I liked - all of it - there wasn't any part of the movie I didn't think worked, but as Ror says, the pacing was off - it could have done with some of the excitement crammed in the last third spread out amongst the second.

No. 2 on my CBMs of the Year so far (Kick-Ass is still #1).

I didn't mind the pacing too much, made the movie feel alot bigger. i think it just comes across asa bad thing because of the difference between number 1 and 2 in that area.
Also with the ending I'm actually sort of glad it didnt drag out for ever and ever. I think people would've complained if it had taken as long as the last fight in iron man 1. I believe that fav didnt want to do the same thing again. but if you think about it the actual fight between whiplash and iron man/war machine is alot longer considering SPOILER he's controlling the drones, it's just a different kind of fight.

super review ror. verry nice to read.

i know what you are saying about stopping people to leave the cinema while the credits are rolling. it was the same in our theather. everybody was leaving :p only the real fans where staying behind :p

you maybe right about the last battle. maybe a little more robots and more whiplash would have made the deal

yowsaman - 4/30/2010, 12:56 AM
edit: little less robots and more whiplash :D

I could be wrong with this but, in the scene near the end where Stark and Fury are having their little chat in the SHIELD base, there are 'monitors' displaying news broadcasts,I only glimpsed it but it looked like it was reports from the campus where Hulk has his run in with General Ross and Emil Blonsky.

Are we suppose to presume that Rhodey has been in one of the suits before? He was able to control it pretty well in the party scene
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 4/30/2010, 6:15 AM
KeithM..Yeah I think i preferd Kick Ass too, although they are very different so maybe the comparison isn't fair.

Boeklaar,..but although the fight with the drones was cool, it was just a scarp with cgi toasters, there was no drama there because you knew that there was no real danger. Whiplash should have owned War Machine to the point of nearly killing him, then forced them to team up..or just let Iron Man handle it. And either way there should have been much more dialog between all of them. It just failed completely for me.

Johno..I think your just supposed to assume that Stark let him have a go a few times!
yowsaman
yowsaman - 4/30/2010, 6:56 AM
about rhodey able to handle the suit so quick. if you remember the first movie when tony makes his first suit he ask's rhodey to join him when he visits him at the hanger. i think he made the suits so him and rhodey both can wear them. that should explain wy rhody can step into it so easly
