Jon Favreau Explains Iron Man 3 Departure for Magic Kingdom!

Favreau now speaks on why he's starting something new with Disney's Magic Kingdom, instead of returning to direct the much-anticipated Iron Man 3. Check it Out!

Learning today that the original director, who also helped to place Marvel Studios on the map, Jon Favreau will not return for Iron Man 3, many are puzzled as to why. Now speaking with the LA Times' Hero Complex, Favreau explains in-depth why he's more interested in committing to Disney's Magic Kingdom adaption, rather than completing the Iron Man trilogy.

Making it clear that his departure from Marvel is no result of fractured relations, his main goal was to “find something that lights a fire” inside of him as a filmmaker and gives him a chance to “blow people away, which is easier to do with a project that isn’t loaded with built-in expectations.” He also said he has been researching the film for many weeks.

“Between the theme parks and the movies, the Disney iconography was probably the first set of archetypes that I was exposed to,” Favreau said of his youth in Flushing, N.Y. “Walt was able to expose me as a child to the full array of emotions, including fear and sorrow. Those movies and attractions haunted my dreams and made a deep impression on me as a child. When I first heard about the ['Magic Kingdom' film] project, I was on my way to visit Disneyland with my family. I took notes and had no problem filling a book with all the ideas that this concept offered, even on first blush. Since then, I was lucky enough to be given a tour of Imagineering by Tony Baxter, who knows just about everything there is to know about Disneyland. He pulled original concept art from the archives for me and exposed me to Walt’s original vision.”

“Marvel and I both came of age together. The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in…. ‘Iron Man’ has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the ‘Iron Man’ films. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world.”

To find out more on why Jon Favreau is eager for the challenge of Magic Kingdom, head over Hero Complex. And moving on Favreau-less, Marvel Studios is quietly, quickly searching for a replacement. Who do you think has what it takes for the armored avenger's return? And anyhow, Iron Man 3 is currently scheduled for theaters May 3, 2013.

Well IRON MAN 2 should have been DEMON IN A BOTTLE!

That party scene was a joke, oh well shame... IRON MAN 1 is still one of the best cbm's ever made!

Great find DCMF! I definitely think that there's something more to this story than meets the eye. However, we'll probably never know what that is. My guess? Favreau blames RDJ for the poor reaction to Iron Man 2 as it was him who recommended the script writer - the worst thing about the movie IMO! :)

Please don't screw up Mandarin in IM 3. Matt Fraction has built him up so much in the comics. Favraeu has built him up as well. Please don't drop the ball guys. The potential is still there.

@Josh....thats true...Theroux said it was rough to write the script. I think they should have gotten a better team of writers.

@Utica....well maybe the next director might not screw up the concept of The Mandarins power. His power is alien in origin, not mystical.

@LEEE....yes that party scene was a total joke. The best part was hearing Daft Punk...but that too quick of a moment.

Iron man 2 was good but could have been more. Well whoever they pick to do #3, I'm sure will be a mainstay with Disney. It may be John Turtletuab or Gore Verbinski...they have done big Franchises and usually make Disney lots of $$$$

@ironbat....they may allude to him being fired or if they implement the resilient story, they may say he left after Stark loses everything

I'm going to make a strictly hypothetical assumption that Marvel was intervening in Favreau's direction. That doesn't mean that Marvel is the new Fox Studios. Whereas FOX intervenes in order to make a profit, Marvel intervenes in order to expand on a story. When you have an idea that's as ambitious as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you have to understand that there's gonna be direction by the studio in order to keep it moving and having it stay coherent. We're just lucky that we have guys at Marvel doing the direction than guys at Fox. The guys at Marvel KNOW what needs to be done with their characters. They need to get directors that are willing to incorporate elements of the Marvel Universe into their films. Brannagh and Johnston seem to understand this and are willing to go forward with it. If Favreau didn't want it, then that's his fault. Not Marvel's. It's a good thing that he left instead of letting his conflict interfere with the quality of the film.

I think Favreau is afraid of the third movie failure syndrome. Need I say all the third chapters in general that usually suck?

Alright, so he dropped out of Iron Man 3 because...he's more interested in making a movie based on a set piece at Disneyland?

No offense, but I'm not so sure that we should be disappointed about him leaving.

Let's leave the speculation on Wall Street. Favreau has spoken and let's just take it as it is.

As for the replacement, I'd go for Alex Proyas.

Not as bad as it sounds, well for me anyway. Magic Kingdom sounds like its gonna be like sorcerers apprentice, and everyone saw how well that did.

If Favreau knew the script was bad than why did he turn it into a movie? The director cant blame the screenwriter for a bad movie as it is director, not the scripter, who's final product hits the screen.

So he is going to make a movie with no built in expectations??? Sounds like he got chicken and is running away. Ah well. I will miss his magic touch to this universe and am very grateful for him establishing the Marvel Movieverse. Can't wait to see what comes next!!

@LEEE: Yeah, dude!! 100% agree!! Demon in a Bottle would have been so much more compelling and intense. That party scene was a watered down version! They even cut out partying/womanizing scenes in the first movie!

I have to edit my comment ^^

I just read the scoop ED posted a few stories down on the main page and Hawks comment really caught my attention--

"I'm not saying this is true but it is easy for me to beleive. Downey is all about improv. While it worked great for IM, it would get more difficult each time to fly by the seat of your pants while sticking to a continuing story. I could easily see Favreau not wanting to continue in that direction.

You also have to remember that Marvel has a definite plan for these films. Downey isn't going to improv his way in a direction that takes away from that plan. That would have to be a pain in the ass, keeping him reigned in on the set.

It would also explain why he is still attatched as Ex. Producer on The Avengers. He can produce and let someone else worry about handling Downey on the set."
--Hawksblueyes

SO, agreeing with that, I believe he is using this making a movie with no built in expectations as the front for his decision to leave without having to say "F--K you guys!! You are difficult to work with and Downey can't take direction!! Do it without me!!" and risk sounding like a total douche. I respect his decision to leave and now believe he is not a little chicken who is running away.
Best of luck to ya Favs!! :D

When is a director leaving two through ever for the best? And Iron Man 2 wasn't bad, it just wasn't as good as the first. Everyone is going to be terribly dissapointed in Batman 3 if: Not as good as the previous installment = bad.

This seems more like it or maybe a band aid who knows. I still do not see what was wrong with IM2. I'm sure Disney/Marvel will find a good replacement but it is too bad. If he really has not left on bad terms I would not be surprised if he was creatively involved in some small degree sort of like on Avengers.

He may not be Directing but since he is only moving to another Disney film then i dont think its as big as everyone thinks..

Im guessing he will still e involved with Avengers and i reckon we will get a Happy Hogan cameo in IM3

I just love how he says that he established, if i'm not misunderstanding, the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE. No need to be modest. What about how he looks "forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world.” I think we have a challenge!

Overall I think he's a great director and departed with dignity. Respect.
