Kevin Feige Explains ‘Iron Patriot’ Usage In IRON MAN 3

Acknowledging the armor's comic book origins and how it drastically changed for Iron Man 3, Marvel Studios pioneer Kevin Feige explains how Don Cheadle's Iron Patriot plays out in the movie. Check it out!

During filming in May last year, early Iron Man 3 set photos had first revealed that the Iron Patriot would be featured in the Shane Black-directed film. With the red, white and blue armor having villainous origins in Marvel Comics, it was a surprise to later learn that the Marvel threequel would include Iron Patriot only as a new paint job for (Don Cheadle) James Rhodey Rhodes’ Iron Man 2 War Machine armor. Explaining how the idea came about, Marvel president Kevin Feige reveals:

“A few years ago in publishing, they created a suit called

the Iron Patriot, which was an advanced Iron Man suit painted red, white and blue with a star on it. In the comics it’s a different character that wears it and utilizes it. But we really loved that image; we thought it was a striking image. And coming off of “The Avengers” where you have Captain America and Captain America is such a symbol for The Avengers, we thought it would be fun if the United States wanted to have their own version of that. Of course, Captain America works for the United States, but as he’s more of an Avengers hero the US Government said, “We want our own,” which is why they take War Machine and rebrand him as the Iron Patriot. Shane Black and I [seeing] the Iron Patriot for the first time [was an exciting reveal] and what the guys at Legacy had done with this suit. Each suit gets better and better. The Iron Patriot practical suit that was worn on set is the best practical suit they’ve ever built.”

“Now over the course of the film we learn that there was a nefarious purpose behind that. It’s a great example of how sometimes you take and stay true to a character as pulled from the comics, and sometimes the comics can be the kernel of an idea that you then flesh out and build into something else. One of the best things about being a part of Marvel Studios is that you have the house of ideas; you have the publishing division that comes out with dozens of books a month and we flip through almost every one of those books every month and just pull things and don’t know where they could be used. But you know, a few years ago we pulled out the Iron Patriot and said, “That’s cool. Wouldn’t that be fun to play with that someday?” And you’ll see it in Iron Man 3.”

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Marvel Studios will also release “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; the sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers” on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

Just don't destroy the armor in the movie, and save it for when marvel gets spidey movie rights back, then have Norman steal it.

Like The Amazing Spiderman 2, I just hope a reference is made as to what happened to the previous suit.

Be quite cool if Tony has the original war machine suit in his hall of armors

More people need to read and truly understand this. Comic book movies are ADAPTIONS based on the comics. As long as I'm in for a GOOD movie and it doesn't change too drastically from the source, I'm down with any comic book film.

I have a feeling that this armor will get destroyed in IM3.

@TheRedSkull the two issue Iron Man 3 preview comic shows that happens to the modified Mark II. Tony removes all the hammer tech from it and forbids Rhodey to pilot it because it isn't designed for him and with continued use it could've caused him to have a heart attack. He designs a new War Machine armor specifically for Rhodey. The comic doesn't touch on it getting modified into the Iron Patriot.

Iron Patriot is coming back in the new Secret Avengers that was recently relaunched. The preview for Issue #3 previews that the character is going to debut in the team, but they haven't said who is going to be piloting the armor.

Now, with Iron Man 3 weeks away from release, you can kinda gather who's going to be under the armor. That, and War Machine was previously in the Secret Avengers.

So they turn Rhodey into the Government's bitch......again.

I don't know how Cheadle puts up with this crap every movie.

I don't have an issue with them rebranding the Iron Patriot armor. But I absolutely hate the fact that they made the chest piece rectangular and then painted a star around it.

War Machine's suit in IM2 had a circular chest piece. If they wanted a star on the chest, switching to a rectangle makes no sense. A circle, pentagon, or an actual star would have been ten times better.

ive been kinda confused about this. Technically IP is Osborne, right? Osborne is a spidey character. So how was Marvel able to use this?

The whole chest star should light up not just the rectangle in the middle.
I can't believe they did it that way, poor design sense.

Iron Patriot is a Marvel character. The license agreement between Marvel and Sony Pictures was made long before the creation of Iron Patriot. Just because the comics depicted IP as Norman in the comics doesn't mean Sony automatically gets IP thrown in as part of their character bundle.

So long as Norman Osborn isn't associated with Iron Patriot, which is a character that Marvel has not licensed out to anyone else, Marvel Studios can play out the film version of Iron Patriot however they want.

@Marvel72

I'm talking insane changes, like characters names are changed and whatnot.

Charles and Erik were friends. The suit designs were exactly from the comics. Beast is still a blue beast. Cerebro is a device used to locate mutants, for the most part all mutants had powers of their comic counterparts.

None of these MCU movies take much from specific comic story line, so theres no room for argument there.

Mannnnnn [FRICK] that prequel comic tie in...smh War Machine should've been mentioned in the Avengers at least once instead of the hours of Tony Stark's spot light! And for people claiming "that we're b*tching about the source material" I say "why not?" it's comp, eyelet idiotic how first we lose Terence Howard then Edward Norton and we just recast them like they're very small characters. Norton tried to place his input on the Hulk's character and they just cast him out like it was nothing.

A prequel comic doesn't make up for at "LEAST" mentioning a characters name once?? GTFO here with that bs!

I respect Marvel Studios and all but they're lazy when it comes to giving minority characters the respect they deserve. Yeah I said it! Wheadon's reasoning behind not having a Black Panther movie is still total bs. I love the guy as a director and he did a fantastic job with the Avengers (8.5/10 for me) but to say Wakanda's environment will be hard to pull off is totally inexcusable. If we can have the cosmic realms of the Avengers with alien technology miles beyond ours why can't we have a grounded setting for Wakanda?

...just doesn't add up at all.

"It would have made more sense to paint the actual War Machine armor red, white, blue instead of putting an armor in the movie from a completely different storyline.

Whatever, just take my [frick]in money already."

But... that's all they did. Painted the ACTUAL War Machine armor red, white and blue. Rhodey has new War Machine armor made especially for him by Tony in this film that the government later repaints as opposed to Rhodey using Tony's Mark II with the Hammer refit.

How is this hard for people to understand?
