Bleeding Cool had a chance to participate in some sort of a John Carter panel in London, where they have seen the footage, as well as what director Andrew Stanton (WALL-E, Finding Nemo) had to say about the project. One of the things many are wondering why they decided to drop "Of Mars" from the title, and now we may have the answer:

"Here’s the real truth of it. I’d already changed it from A Princess Of Mars to John Carter Of Mars. I don’t like to get fixated on it, but I changed Princess Of Mars… because not a single boy would go.

And then the other truth is, no girl would go to see John Carter Of Mars. So I said, “I don’t won’t to do anything out of fear, I hate doing things out of fear, but I can’t ignore that truth.”

All the time we were making this big character story which just so happens to be in this big, spectacular new environment. But it’s not about the spectacle, it’s about the investment. I thought, I’ve really worked hard to make all of this an origin story. It’s about a guy becoming John Carter. So I’m not misrepresenting what this movie is, it’s John Carter.

Mars is going to stick on any other film in the series. But by then, it won’t have a stigma to it."

I really don't mind that the title is just John Carter, and he kind of has a point. Since this is a first film, the title is actually a good fit (I don't want to spoil anything, but you'll see in the film). And as you can see, he does say that "Mars" will be included in sequels.

Starring Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston, James Purefoy, Dominic West, Thomas Haden Church and Ciarán Hinds, John Carter is set to hit theatres on March 9, 2012!

Comic book movies aren't just made for comic book fans they are made for everyone. Comic book fans alone won't make a movie successful, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to but buts in the seats.

Plus, lets be real here people. If you are the average film goer and you have never heard of the comic you would think the movie was a parody just reading the title alone. Unless you have seen the trailer you would assume that it is another animated kids movie about a dude who went to Mars. This movie looks good, but I understand how adding from Mars wasn't doing it any favors.

Lucas should never have named his film Star Wars. He should have just called it WARS. Just imagine all the money he could have made on that.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't see anything titled Princess of Mars. Smart move there Mr. Stanton.

Reminds me of when they were working on Tangled; they originally titled it Rapunzel, but changed it to Tangled to attract other audiences.

I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel with the full title (John Carter Of Mars).

What if they would have just made it "Princess John Carter of Mars"? Then everyone would go! Right? Huh?

Nomis: Yes, that part. And I think he means "becoming" John Carter of Mars, when he actually gets there. There was a scene in the new trailer where Dejah Thoris calls him "John Carter of Earth", I mean I don't wanna spoil it, but they won't call him JC Of Mars right away.

So how is he going to market this to girls? Lots of bear chests and bicepts? Why not just give it soundtrack by Justin Beiber?

Well I think girls like Pirates of the Caribbean not solely due to Orlando Bloom's pretty boy Will Turner or Depps quirky Captain Sparrow but I do think that there are some young ladies who might be familiar with John Carter of Mars but I can assure you they aren't the female majority.

Basically what I'm saying is that it is indeed a good strategic move that Stanton altered the title from 'John Carter of Mars' to simply 'John Carter' because many females definitely wouldn't turn up to see the film in large numbers and it's nothing worth fighting over as the 'of Mars' will be incorporated in the titles of the sequels.

To be honest, in this day and age I don't think even many young boys know what John Carter of Mars is. I only know of John Carter of Mars because I was geek for all things science and sci-fi and I'm 23.

Good choice. John Carter of Mars sound like the name of a pixar movie. The fact that someone who works for "pixar" made that decision surprises me.

He didn't want "of Mars" because no girls would go to it? Seriously? Well with that line of thinking they should have changed the names of pretty much EVERY CBM or Sci-Fi film ever made right? What "girl" will want to go see a film titled "Star Wars" or "Star Trek" or "The Avengers"???

What a complete pussy!
