JUSTICE LEAGUE: One Early Joke Between The Flash & Batman Was Cut Because Of A Profanity Limit

According to Ezra Miller, an early joke in Justice League was cut between The Flash and Ben Affleck's Batman because it contained a curse word that threatened the film's PG-13 rating.

One of the biggest critiques of the DC Extended Universe is how tonally dark the films tend to be. As we've seen from the trailers, Justice League attempts to inject some more fun into the franchise (whether it succeeded is a completely different story).

Ezra Miller's The Flash seems to be the comedic relief, and according to the actor, there was one
joke in particular that was sacrificed to ensure the film maintained its PG-13 rating.

"There's a line that I miss from the film, that I wish was in there," Miller revealed to GameSpot. "[Aquaman] throws that thing against the wall in the Batcave, and [Batman's] original line was--I think now he just says, 'Hey. Don't do that.' But the original line was, 'Hey. Don't do that. A lot of my sh*t explodes.'"

As for why
it was cut, Ezra hypothesized, "Because, I think, that we only got a certain number of curse words."

Now would that four letter word have actually added anything to the film or improved the review scores? Doubtful, but it's interesting to hear the reason certain things left in the editing bay.

In typical,
DCEU fashion, Justice League has less than favorable reviews and currently sits at a 39% on Rotten Tomatoes. On the bright side, that's better than how the DCEU typically fairs with critics; but, unlike the previous films in the DCEU, the pedestrian reviews now appear to significantly affecting the box office.

Seems like most things were limited in this movie. The duration, the plot, the editing, and the storytelling competence. At least we have this gem:

@Brave - I'm first...but I didn't mention it in the first comment. @SuperPorg I promise I'll get it right next time!

On rewatching the trailers, you can tell that a LOT of things were cut
Thats why I dont even bother anymore with analysis or speculation, you dont even know whats making it on the final cut anymore. And this its a common pattern with most movies now

How many times do they say "shit" in the movie? Because every Transformers movie uses "shit" like a trillion times and they still get away with a PG-13.

They even throw in a "[frick]" or two for good measure.

@MUTO123 - Marvel movies do that too. hell, the first word of dialogue in AoU is Tony shouting "sh*t!"

@Brave - You're not even close to being the only one. That's something that everybody finds weird about those movies, because they're so written on the level of the littlest of little kids, and yet there's a shit-ton of cuss words in them.
MUTO123
MUTO123 - 11/17/2017, 7:50 PM
@Spidey91 - Yeah, but only a handful of times. It's not every third or fourth word.

And they never say "[frick]" either.

@MUTO123 - X-Men: Apocalypse straight dropped an F-bomb with no issue (I've heard PG-13s are allowed one of those).

So what's the ratio for allowable profanity? 1 "[frick]": 5 "shits"?

MUTO123
MUTO123 - 11/17/2017, 8:06 PM
@EskimoJ - I have no [frick]ing idea. There's usually only 1 "[frick]" allowed in PG-13 movies, but I've seen movies that use it more that still get PG-13. I'm pretty sure Million Dollar Baby used it 4 or 5 times and that's still a PG-13.

@MUTO123 - maybe WB were the ones who said they can't use to many curse words, because they're afraid to scare away parents?

@Spidey91 - Language!

As an aside, if anyone is curious as to how Hollywood treats "bad words" in cinema...you can take a few seconds to Google it and find out they have a pretty precise formula for how many can be used, and in what context.

It makes for an interesting read, actually.

Is anyone else just relieved that this film is finally f***ing out?!?

I mean I feel like they have been promoting this movie since that Unite the seven Aquaman poster.

@solargeknowles - Good point, they never once brought up what they meant by "Seven2 in the film, did they? They never even showed the scene of Vic Stone with a number seven on his football jacket. And why on Earth was Cavill tweeting things like
"Kal waiting for Hal"
and
"I've got to make sure I'm bigger than Green Lantern... Wait, whaaat?"

Maybe those rumors of Tom Cruise as Hal Jordan were actually true and that he was cut along with Darkseid.

Not to mention DC Films very own opening logo that features all seven members!

I can only imagine how that headline reads to a DCEU-superfan-edgelord. What upsets them more? That the movie is a PG-13 kiddie fest that can't say naughty words, or that the movie was (and is) so full of jokes, Jokes, JOKES!

I shouldn't make fun, but it's crazy how far we've come.
