ZACK SNYDER'S JUSTICE LEAGUE VFX Supervisor Reveals How Much New FX Was Added - Exclusive

Zack Snyder's Justice League is a vastly different film to the one released in 2017, and when we recently spoke with the VFX team, they addressed the misconception of how much of the movie is newly made.

The road to Zack Snyder's Justice League has been like no other. After a dismal response to the 2017 film, fans pushed to get Snyder's original version released without Joss Whedon's much-maligned additions.

Out of the controversial ashes rose the phoenix. What was originally referred to as the Snyder Cut is now called Zack Snyder's Justice League, and is nearly unrecognizable from the original film. The sprawling epic clocks in at just over four hours, with six parts (seven including the epilogue) that flesh out characters in brilliant ways, particularly Ray Fisher's Cyborg and Steppenwolf.

Because the film was so vastly different and so much was altered or added, we chatted with the Weta Digital VFX team to better understand the behind-the-scenes process. When asked, the team, which consists of Kevin Andrew Smith (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Simeon Duncombe (Avengers: Endgame), and Anders Langlands (X-Men: Days of Future Past), was quick to point out that fans have a misconception when it comes to how much footage was already shot and how much had to be filmed from scratch.

Minor spoilers ahead...

"Most of it was new. I think there was a misconception when this show was greenlit that we were just gonna dust off the old work, but there was actually vastly more new work than there was old. Even in the performance of Steppenwolf being in 80% of the shots or something, a huge percentage, even if it was an old shot where we were taking the performance, we still had work there to do. You still want it to tweak his performance to the new design.

It's largely all new stuff. And like I mentioned earlier with how we approach the motion capture for the new design, that's a new approach as well. So yeah, a lot of new work. And integrating the new design into shots that were filmed for a different design was also a huge challenge for us as well. So yeah, it was way more work than the first time around in less time as well, which is great."

Obviously, this is just a small portion of our conversation. We want to avoid as many spoilers as possible, so we have included the entirety of our chat below. Be sure to let us know what you think after listening and feel free to share your thoughts in the usual spot!

What misconception? never heard of anyone talking about the amount of effects and considering the 70 million, seemed obvious it was going to be a lot

This movie effects r trash, n im not sure the movie is better. I had at least hoped wb had invested ina good looking film cuz that is usually snyders strong suit.

@Hames4479 - I think I have a bad eye for CGI cause everytime someone says effects are awful I always say “they were pretty good” I actually think the SnyderCut CGI looks good. I also thought Rogue One’s Tarkin looked brilliant and people disagreed with me on that one too. I do also feel like CGI in general is treated unfairly, people these days are really harsh on it.

@JohnCastillo - dude i respect your opinion, but in 4k hdr on a an lg oled compared to the batman v superman bluray i was just me watching, its ugly, respect the vision, but stepenwolf looks worse than in the theatrical version. Maybe its just me.

Not surprising. That 70 million budget was 70 million for a reason.

Yeah but that can fund some serious effects these days. Seen productions do amazing things with the same cash.just wish hbo max wouldv been as serious as feige, favreau, or even the boys showrunners when it comes to delivering quality.

@bkmeijer - you can do alot with 70 million these days, n this looks bad,

@Hames4479 - I think difference here is, they all had studios to work from. This was done a lot remotely

@bkmeijer - yeah but most viz fx r remote, i understand covid happened but moment to moment shot for shot this looks worse than the theatrical, which is unforgivable.

Can people stop claiming he just used old scenes now then?

Not hard to make a better movie when you're re-shooting scenes and fixing the terrible CGI and visuals based off the negative feedback the original had. And spending over 4 hours on developing characters that you'd never get in an actual theatrical movie

I could have made a better JL movie than the original if I had thousands of terrible reviews as a reference on what needed fixing.

Most of the new scenes have a terrible CGI, sometimes che characters look like cut and past from one scene to another and some digital body doubles are really weak. And I'm not even mentioning Martian Manhunter...

I think Steppenwolf actually looked much better than i expected. in 4k at least. the detail they put on the armor and facial expression is miles better than the theatrical version.

Other effects were wonky though, like the stuff they tried to recreated from BvS with the repurposed shots. Lex in the pool seeing Steppenwolf looked bad and some of the horse stuff with the amzaonians when Steppenwolf is chasing them.

The leaked verison youtube video of martian manhunter looked bad, but after watching in HD it wasn't so terrible. It was pointless having him there though, didn't affect the story in anyway, just fan service, which i'll gladly take.
