A scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice which was released online and later included in the Ultimate Edition showed Lex Luthor in communion with Steppenwolf but a new interview has revealed that it was actually something else which led to the villain's decision to return to Earth. As has been speculated, that was the death of Superman and it turns out that led to a Mother Box waking up!
A Kryptonian's demise probably would send shockwaves through the universe and remarks from Steppenwolf in the trailer have indicated that he may have had his eye on Earth for quite some time.
"Superman's death has awakened a Mother Box," says producer Curtis Kanemoto. "One of these exists in man's world, one of these exists on Themyscira, and one in Atlantis. When one of these Mother Boxes Awakens, it calls to Steppenwolf, our villain, and he arrives to collect them. The story borrows from the world of Jack Kirby who created the New Gods. Zack Snyder, Geoff Johns, and Chris Terrio have done an amazing job integrating the Apokoliptian tech in the world of Justice League."
Fellow Justice League producer Jon Berg also shed some light on Steppenwolf's history and it sounds like he was the one responsible for that initial attack on Earth and not Darkseid as most assumed. "He's a warrior from another planet who tried to conquer Earth a few thousand years ago and failed. He's been living with the disgrace of having failed and desperately wants to avenge his previous loss."
