We recently learned that Marvel Studios is going back to the drawing board with the Multiverse Saga, potentially swapping out TV shows for more Special Presentations and getting back to focusing on quantity over quality. Phase 4 has been, for lack of a better word, a mess, with it becoming apparent that Kevin Feige and his team have been stretched too thin.
That's evident from hit-and-miss VFX, inconsistent storytelling, and a lack of connective tissue, with the pandemic doing little to help matters.
According to The Cosmic Circus' Alex P., "While the slate moving means having to wait longer for future projects to be released, it’s ultimately for the sake of keeping quality > quantity. Don’t expect 2022’s schedule of at least [one] Marvel project each month to stay true for 2023/2024."
Honestly, we wouldn't be against even huge movies like Fantastic Four and Avengers: Secret Wars slipping a couple of years further down the calendar if it means they avoid being classed as disappointments.
With so many Disney+ TV shows (thought to be a mandate of ousted Disney CEO Bob Chapek as he looked to increase subscriber numbers), it's no bad thing for Marvel Studios to start focusing on what works again. If that means delaying or scrapping upcoming projects - then so be it.
One small screen story that does appear to be safe, however, is Wonder Man. According to a listing on Head Writer Andrew Guest's Writer's Guild of America page, we can expect to see the show arrive during the 2023-2024 season. Currently expected to be a six-episode TV series, we can't help but wonder if Simon Williams' story might also be best suited to a Special Presentation.
Hopefully, we'll get to hear from Kevin Feige about future plans because he's always been pretty open about Marvel Studios' successes and failings. While Phase 4 was far from a disappointment, the fact that its inconsistencies are being addressed is welcome news.
