Can't blame Universal for trying to build a cinematic universe, every studio is just trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to copy the Marvel mold.

I actually liked the idea of a monster cinematic universe. Anyway looks like from the reviews Dracula Untold would be better kept untold.

that's cool, thank u for ur review... Great Review... if they were to make it more sophisticated like Underworld/Frankenstein style-ish a bit, BUT with a darker storyline, almost horror-ish but not too much...then the franchise will take off successfully... so we'll see, i suppose...
But nevertheless, i enjoyed the film, going to watch it again on the big screen...

Universal's monsters existing in a "shared universe" is nothing new. Remember FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN, HOUSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, and HOUSE OF DRACULA?

@MrTroll -Marvel is not the first company to have a shared universe. Universal did it years ago....Wolfman Meets Frankenstein and the such.

darthrageracezero - the thing is they want to be successful like marvel, not forgettable that the crap you mentioned. plus your last post makes zero sense. marvel has a shared universe, thats 100% indisputable, the fact that they used to have a shared universe and now still do have a shared universe does not in any way mean that they do not currently have a shared universe.

noone said marvel was the first, they just implied that they are doing it correctly, which usually means profitablly

You will not be disappointed @Mrsinister. I thought the film would have been one horrible experience, but I was pleasantly surprised. Luke Evans really shined in this film. It makes me very hopeful for their shared universe. "Let the games begin."

Al the babies saying "it's been done before Marvel". Idiots. A crossover is one thing. A shared universe is another. So no, no one did it before Marvel.

I would like to commend Mr. Sunday on his balanced and very useful review, although after hearing said review, I am not eager to see this movie prior to its release on video.

Having said that I am wondering how many of the other nine creatures from the universal monster world can reasonably fit with this Dracula. The other nine being The Hunchback, the opera phantom, Frankenstein's monster, the Bride, the Invisible Man, The Werewolf, Black Lagoonie, Abbott, and Costello. The last two were definitely in a shared universe with Dracula, Frankenstein's critter and Wolfie in an old movie of the type it would be hard to accept now. It is hard to see how the universe does get rebuilt. It worked way back when all of these creatures were more original, and I cannot where it is going now that many of them seem like jokes (which they must have seemed like by the time Abbot and Costello entered the picture (1940s).

Next question: why doesn't Universal build on its popular Despicable Me franchise. I mean you could throw some heroes into that universe and create some tie in comic books. The second movie in that franchise is the most profitable movie that Universal ever made. Possible answers are: A because they what they are doing and such a shared universe has no real future. B They do not know what they are doing or C they are planning to use the despicable franchise as back up if this monster idea fails. One obvious disadvantage of the monster mash up universe is that most of the critters are in the public domain. Anyone could make a movie with Frankenstein's daemon, a werewolf and a mummy come to life without Universal's permission. By contrast WB owns the DCU, Sony has exclusive rights to build a Spider Verse and Fox owns exclusive rights to build a Mutant universe. Universal is the only one trying to imitate the MCU using characters that it cannot buy exclusive rights to.

Further question: do the velociraptor and the giant tarantula fit into this new shared universe. They are never listed with the eight universal monsters, but they are scary critters that are more interesting than the Creature from the Black Lagoon. We get answer if the next Jurassic Park park movie has some hint that velociraptor is in the monster mash up universe.
