It's aliiiiive... but it's not going to be played by Andrew Garfield.

Fan-favorite director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Blade 2, The Shape of Water) confirmed that he had finally begun working on his long-gestating adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein for Netflix late last year, with Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight, the Star Wars sequel trilogy), Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man movies), and Mia Goth (Infinity Pool, Pearl) in the lead roles.

“I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it. It’s Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and we’re working on it.”

The project has now added several supporting cast members, and a new lead in Saltburn's Jacob Elordi - who will be replacing Garfield in one of the main roles!

The Spider-Man: No Way Home actor was reportedly forced to part ways with the movie due to a strike-related scheduling conflict, and Elordi will now bring life to Frankenstein's Monster. Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lars Mikkelsen (The Witcher), David Bradley (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) have also signed on in undisclosed roles.

Isaac will play Victor Frankenstein, and Goth is believed to have been cast as his wife, Elizabeth, who may also become the Monster's Bride (depending on which version of the story Del Toro goes with).

Del Toro will write and direct the film.

First published in 1818, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus has been adapted numerous times for the stage and screen, but there have been very few fully faithful takes on the story (the creature's appearance in the novel, for example, has never been accurately depicted).

With Del Toro behind the camera, it's probably safe to assume that this version will stick as closely as possible to the book.

Just in case you're somehow unaware of the premise of the novel, you'll find a brief synopsis below.

"A young scientist, Victor Frankenstein, driven by vanity and thirst for knowledge, manages to give life to a creature whom he assembled from dead material. The creature turns out very ugly, and Victor abandons him in horror. Rejected by his creator and hated by mankind in general, the Monster devotes himself to destruction and revenge."

That sucks since I would have liked to have seen Garfield’s take but oh well…

Still haven’t seen a single performance of Elordi’s but dudes stock is certainly on the rise so wish him well for this.

A GTD Frankenstein still sounds too good to pass on so I’m looking forward to it.

I love Christian, I hope he has a big role in this. He’s a really solid, decent kid with a good heart.

i'll trust anything "monsters-wise."
I mean, it is so mindless fun that we get to see Godzilla and KONG square off and then team up.
my mind is going thru a brain-trust

I can't believe del Toro didn't cast Ron Perlman as the Monster.

After binging the Universal and Hammer originals as well as the DeNiro version this Halloween I really hope they can get something out of this material.
The story is great at the heart of the matter ("the true monster is our preconceptions and desire to play god") but we may just have seen a little too much of it in the past.

If they manage to put a new spin on it like they did with "The Invisible Man" I'm all for it.

But holy heck, nostalgia blinded me on this series. The original movie was fine and then devolved into a superhero-clash series starring the Wolf-Man over the Monster or Frankenstein.
The Hammer films did well by focusing on Cushing as the Dr. but having a new monster each movie didn't make it easy to get attatched or care. They kinda ripped the Universal Mummy movies off by the rotating cast of monsters.

The Deniro version was the best, not because of the modern style but because it took its time to focus on the Monster and build it up.

But holy heck, the original movies weren't good in retrospect...I'm so sorry :(

@Blergh - The original movies are masterpieces. Of course, they have to be watched with the understanding of how much different movies were back. Then Boris Karloff, in particular was excellent as the monster. And of course, if you don’t get the implied aspect, this is my humble opinion. also, for the most part, I am referring to the first Dracula movie and the first two Frankenstein movies. The sequel devolved after that. Bride of Frankenstein is one of those rare sequels that’s considered better than the original movie. And ponder this if you will, without the two original universal Frankenstein movies, we never would’ve had Young Frankenstein and that would’ve been a tragedy.

Gotta love del Toro’s attitude. “Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it. “

Elordi's a decent actor and defo got the size for it but Andrew's just on another level performance-wise imo, it's a real shame that we won't be able to see his take on the creature.

This is disappointing I was curiously excited for Andrews portrayal of the monster.

I think this is a better choice, plus Elordi is on a rise right now (still thought Saltburn wasn't the best, overhyped) I'm hyped for this. Plus Nosferatu from Eggers, this movie is full of amazing movies! And none of them are cbm's lol funny how the industry will be just fine without them

Guillermo del Toro directing a Frankenstein movie. I mean anything can happen, but that's such a perfect match it would be impossible to suck. I'm not as familiar with this actor though.

Are we talking about Leslie Jones here?

I found out about this before the Golden Globes and tbh, it's such a downgrade for me.

Maybe I'll warn up to the new guy if I can find the time to watch Priscilla on cinemas around these days, but still, what a loss.

Hope to see Andrew soon in something new ASAP to make up for this.
