Thanks to Bleeding Cool we have the following excerpts from a statement by Bob Wayne about the relaunching of the DC Universe this September. To read the whole thing, click on the link at the bottom of the page. For now, here is the most interesting excerpt. It would appear that despite speculation, the new range of #1 titles won't mean that the DCU is starting from scratch...however, with conflicting reports stating that this is a fresh start, what exactly is it if not a reboot?

With The New DCU – the September launch of our 52 #1s – we have created an event that we believe will generate unprecedented buzz, and, more importantly, unprecedented sales results for you. This is a shock to the system, no question, but we have the quality stories and the unrivaled sales/marketing support and the increased public attention to help you best absorb that shock and profit from it.

We know that you want more details on the creative teams and their title-by-title assignments for the launch. . (And by the way, let me just reiterate this point: this is the launch of the New DCU. It is not a "reboot." I think you will soon discover why that is.)

What do you guys make of all this? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

From what I heard, it is just a remake of their comics with updated costumes

Well this makes much more sense, since there are many titles that are outside of the mainstream continuity to really matter. so whatever they have up their sleeve is we have to wait and see. So far the firs 10 shown look good. I might pick up a few of them

LMAO @Intruder - that's correct. A lot of people have been harping something about what's Marvel done so far and it's supposedly DC's move... Some of the titles do need the relaunch/reboot though - DC don't have Superman 100 percent now so it makes sense to make some changes. I never liked him with Lois Lane anyhow - with the sun powering him, he's basically immortal and she's not.

How the heck is Lane still alive anyway after having sex with him? :P

@ToughGrappler: Marvel with realism??? LMAO, for real??? What comics have you been smoking boy??? Wanna talk boring (yet inconsistent) "realism", take a look at TDK.

That is as valid a prediction as any at this point but the only problem is why do Batman and Green Lantern not look like their movie versions in the above pick?

Yeah I wanna see Superman's new costume. Instead of giving him a new costume, they should work on his lame ass disguise.

i thought this was clear, it's not a reboot, the current arcs and stories that are going will continue as they normally would. the next issue is simply going to be a different number.

Mark my words, this is just a marketing ploy to get people used to the change in Superman's suit. I'm betting it's supposed get the rabid fanboys used to the new suit before the movie comes out.

So they're luanching a new universe with younger, different versions of their characters...and it's not a reboot? Consider me confused.

@ToughGrappler, Marvel plays on boring realism? With characters lie Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer, Thor? Come on. You may not like te way Marvel tells it's stories, but realism isn't a good argument, especially when DC's The Dark Knight, possibly the best CBM ever, is n of the most realistic. Anyway, that new Green Arrow costume looks sweet as hell.

@ToughGrappler - I'm not that much of a die hard Marvelite. While they do tend to try to "ground" their characters with some realism despite the fact it's impossible to do so, they still don't over-reach too much... at least not when I was an avid reader until work and RL bogged ME down. I've always like most of the '90's and early 2000 adventures of their more SCI-FI characters like Dr Strange, Silver Surfer, Thor, and Fantastic Four. The only realism I see Spider-Man having back then was the human part of him and his problems with how his double life stressed him out and more often than not... the tragedies he went through that built him up into the hero is was in a coldly brutal universe. From what I can see - despite the tones, it wasn't too bogged down with "realism" - at least not the way I think you mean - there are TONS of fantastical elements in it. Having actual Gods mucking about doesn't say much about realism. It's pretty much how Intruder explains it.

I don't know what you mean about TDK. If you mean by unrealistic as a defined "Super Hero" in a movie, then yes it was. They bogged it with too much "realism" as TDK fanatics say... and left no room for comic book fantasy. It got way too serious and turned part of itself into an explanatory film monologue about their personal ideologies. As a film in general, it was OK - the acting was close to top notch as can be - Ledger's performance was creepy great. There were a few plot holes that weren't explained very well and defied common sense (some of which has been discussed here a ton of times already, so you probably know what I'm talking about).

The part that bored me was the fact it moved way too drastically away from what Batman was as a mythological figure that the parent comic book always portrays. There was barely anything in it that screamed to me that he was someone "larger than life" except in the end and it came from Gordon's mouth. That was the only time that it felt like a "Super Hero" movie to me.

Despite the great acting, Ledger was just a guy who was a frigging psycho wearing makeup in the end - and Bale (with a voice that ruined Batman's mystique in the movie with a sound that would have gotten him laughed at in the real world in that getup) ended up looking like a guy wearing a batsuit trying to be Batman. Most of the time when he was in the suit felt rushed, IMO. Even in Batman Begins (which seemed to be a better film as the story flow wasn't as jarring as it's sequel), they missed out on one of the most important aspect of what Batman was other than an ass-kicker: a Detective. That side was rarely (if it ever really was) shown and glossed over. More than once, he had relied on Lucius Fox and stuff laying about in R&D storage for backup. I've seen the film for a total of three times - first for pure entertainment, second to get the feel of the story, and third to break it down and analyze it technically... it was at the third time I saw it in that light that I realized it wasn't all that.

For DC as a whole (disregarding TDK), I agree with you about it's ideas on fiction. Compared to Marvel, most of their characters ARE larger than life... and rightly so. Marvel looks into the human condition and trying to make it better while living in it, while DC looks into the human aspiration of something better and aiming for it.

@Toughgrappler

Ya, like that time when NYC got turned into Spider-People? Tots with the realism. And that part where the soldier survives 50 years in a glacier? Practically beating me over the head with realism :p

@ToughGrappler - eh, more like Detective Comics Lite from where I saw it, bro. Everything about DC (including Detective Comics) had Batman as a "larger than life" tone despite the overall locale and showcasing the people in it. You pretty much pegged TDK by your definition as a Marvel clone because it excluded the silly and fun stuff. Serious films can never be boring if the aim was elsewhere - unfortunately, to me, it didn't have the wonder and mystique that I personally saw in the comics even if it was just a story of regular people in a Batman-verse. While you were happy, I was sadly disappointed because it didn't live up to my expectations of how Batman was supposed to be like in spirit.

BTW generalizing Marvel the way you do does not take into account all the fantastical elements it does have. Not everything in Marvel takes place in the "real world" - there's Genosha, the Savage Lands, Shi'ar Empire, Atlantis, Asgard, Latveria, Skrull and Kree Empires, etc - none of them taking place in the so-called real world. Most of my favorite characters are pretty much the space-faring Heroes and Villains.

Bottom line: none of them (Marvel AND DC) take place in a "real world". In fact, DC also has real world places like NYC, California, DC, etc.... some of their characters even patrol those areas in the books and call those places home. They're pretty much balanced IMO - and only differ in how they treat their respective universe.

In fact, with Siegel and Shuster Estates damnably winning the most of the Superman rights, I have no idea if they'll still be using places they've won in the lawsuit now in the comic books as the heirs have control of where and how they'll be used.

The Flash is going to have to chase Reverse-Flash through time. He's going to stop him from making the one change that affects (or creates) the Flashpoint timeline, but in doing so he's going to erase the future. There will also be irreparable damage done to time which will bring about the new DCU with minor changes. Flash is going to end up (time wise) somewhere after COIE but before the mid 90s and continuity is going to continue again from back then. If it's not a full reboot and it acknowledges that some of the past DCU events have taken place, that's the only way I see it happening.
