Here is the cover and some preview art for the upcoming issue..

Gillen spoke to Ifanboy..

"When the stories [about gay teen suicide] started to break, the first place I heard about it was actually from [Matt]Fraction. We'd just passed the baton, and he said "If I was still writing the X-Men...". I read the news and could only agree.

It’s not the type of story that fits in any other major superhero book. It’s simply not what those books are about. But the X-Men? X-Men is a book about mutants, used as a metaphor about prejudice. And of the X-Men books, Generation Hope is fundamentally about new mutants trying to survive dealing with the fact they’re mutants. With the metaphor in place, you can not just do a story about it – I dare say you should tell a story about it. In a real way, it’s the sort of story Generation Hope exists to tell. If we can’t tell this story and tell it as well as we can, the book may as well not exist.”

I can only think of a couple X-MEN mutants that are gay and still teenagers, Bling! and Anole.

@ Nephillim
Doubt they're gonna kill off Wiccan though, considering they have the whole "Avengers: The Children's Crusade" story going on that's taking it's sweet ass time.

man, i hate when they try to put seriousl messages like this in comics, its so '80-90's. and the gay issue is nothing new anyway.

@ madking

yes, in Grant Morrison's New X-Men, when Trish Tilby stood Beast up for a date, she apologized to him and he stated, "Its okay, I think I might be gay anyway". But i don't believe they ever followed up with that little arc, or made too big a deal about it. :)

the green lantern annual had a story about a gay kid that had unrequited feelings for kyle rayner, so kyle goes to his house (which the real life town that is next to mine, Maplewood, NJ, and is known as a big openly gay community, oddly enough), and tells him it's ok to be who he is and he's still his friend etc etc. green lanterns light etc. it was kind of silly but i thought it was funny since the local nickname for Maplewood is 'Gayplewood' and they kind of acknowledged that.

I like this; I think it’s a great medium for bringing these things to light for an audience who may not really know much about it. Awareness is the first step to help.

....Now you Know, and Knowing is half the battle. G.I.JOE!

Gusto@ on a completely unrelated note, I left a little somethin somethin on the DC Universe relaunch picture post from yesterday ;)

For those complaining about comics taking on real life issues, perhaps its time to hit the dojo and read more. Comics are art..like all art, it reflects the society around it. Comics have always been filled with references and messages to our every day life. From Marvel's Civil War addressing government control vs. independence to Green Lantern/Green Arrow discussing race relations in America back in the 1970's.

Why don't they just take it to another level. Russians have a high suicide rate as well so tackle the issue for both and use the basterdized Colossus from the Ultimate storyline and off him. Then we can take care of two issues- the social issues they want to cover and making fans happy by getting rid of the imposter Colossus since we all know he is not gay. (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)

Well it is true the X-Men are all about being gay. Think about it. Society doesn't accept them entirely, and they're fighting to be accepted, etc., etc.

No, Beast turned out to not be gay, but in New X-Men, he certainly did question his own sexuality.

It was time! Gay kids reading comics will find out that there's nothing wrong about it.

Why are people complaining about this? This is a major problem and the numbers of gay teens who are made miserable to the point where they take their own life has been growing at a disgusting rate.
Has the thought ever occurred to any of you that perhaps this is a way for people in comics to reach out and maybe let people know that it's okay to be different and suicide isn't the way out.
Sure, there are other people get bullied, there are other people that commit suicide, but there has been a far greater number lately of teen suicides related to gay bullying.
I'm proud of Gillen for taking on this issue. For years, comics have been used as a "PSA" So to speak. With issues from Drugs, to abortion, to Suicide in general, to racism.

@ adam

the bottom line is that if you're going to kill yourself, then reading a comic about the issue isn't going to make you stop. people that are so down on life that they want to kill themselves, are going to do it, regardless. its sad, but its the truth.

@Adam I agree

@raspedoits, research has shown that some are born gay, it is true that people can change their sexual preferece, but a lot are born gay.
raspedoits
raspedoits - 6/22/2011, 9:59 AM
@ greenhaljordan, nobody is born gay, thats impossible. Dont get me wrong, I love the gay person as much as I love straight people, but homosexuality is definitely a choice whether some realize it or not.

raspedoits, no it isn't impossible at all..or are you a geneticist that has made a sudden and as yet unrevealed breakthrough in human gene research? It hasn't been proven one way or another.

Ok, so we can be born with a predisposition for violence(Double white chromo) but it's just impossible that some of us can be born with an attraction to the same sex? Obviously our upbringing affects how we are in many ways, but if something is built into us then we are only preventing the inevitable. I don't KNOW that gay people are born that way, but I'm open minded to at least consider the possibility. But then, I guess that wouldn't be very in keeping with the Bible would it?
tripttwe
tripttwe - 6/22/2011, 10:37 AM
Man I used to love the X-Men, stuff like this & Bryan Singer's crap ideas that everyone seems to love so much have turned this franchise into straight Bulls#!t! We have enough outlets that are sympathetic to the homosexual agenda. That commercial with Wanda Sykes was enough for me. On to the next one...
tripttwe
tripttwe - 6/22/2011, 10:46 AM
PS: I've yet to find a homosexual person without Daddy issues, sexual misconduct in their past, or both. I have gay friends and I believe that these issues are the root cause to the sexual confusion that occurs. Bottom line: I personally feel like it's a choice, but the aforementioned ingredients are in the recipe...

@Adam, MovieTheaterLad, Legionario, and especially Ror...I agree with you guys.

Didn't know we had geneticists, movie writers and directors, producers, and Gods here in CBM.com haha..that can tell you more about ones own life than they know themselves. Good stuff

@raspedoits: If being gay was a choice, don't you think people would choose to be straight and avoid bullying and homophobia?? There's a web page on-line called "Born this way" where gay people leave their experoences as kids, stating how they always knew there was something different about them but society wouldn't let them show freely. Perhaps you should start reading more than just comic books...
Jonet
Jonet - 6/22/2011, 11:13 AM
@tripttwe: Everything I said to raspedoits applies to you too. Plus I live in Spain, where gay people and straight people share the same rights and all my gay friends are completely happy and comfortable with themselves, enjoy their sexual and romantic relationships and love their parents.
