Fear Itself is the blockbuster comic event this year. When I first heard about it, it sounded interesting....but when I heard it was going to be as far-reaching as
Civil War, I became hyped for this event. The writers were promising BIG things...."The biggest event since
Civil War, maybe even bigger!" "It has a beginning, a middle, and an end." "We are going to be busting the doors down with the biggest story we've ever told." "An extinction-level event." So, does issue one of
Fear Itself deliver BIG things? Read on.
Yes, it's true. This issue is an awesome opening for
Fear Itself. This is what events are all about.
Odin gets center-stage in this issue. I have no idea what's going on in
Thor....but what's his problem? At the end, he commands the Asgardians to leave earth and head back to Asgard while the God of Fear is approaching......huh? I don't know, I find that a bit cowardly.
Thor also gets center-stage in this issue, disagreeing with Odin on pretty much everything. Man, I'm glad Thor stood up. (Or at least tried.) The tension between son and father is astounding.
The art is gorgeous, this is the best art in a comic book I've seen in a long time.
Alright, when I heard that the "Serpent" was coming back, I thought they were talking about the Midgard Serpent. I mean, based on all the covers with the Serpent, I was expecting, well, a monster....not some "Dark Odin." I hope some giant serpent appears later.
Regarding Sin, she got a lot more than she bargained for when she lifted the hammer. Things are getting interesting now, with "the Worthy" coming.
In closing, issue one of
Fear Itself does its job of delivering an awesome opening that makes you want to come back for the rest.
I give this issue a 5/5.
