How do you get your comics fix?

A few years ago I asked Mike Mignola(at comiccon) how he kept up with all the titles being contently released with out breaking the bank. even though he's a well paid writer now he said that in "early days" he used to download alot from DCP. I had never heard of such a thing at the time, but since that faithful day I've filled my hard drive with dozens upon dozens of comics, and all of them illegal.

For those of you who don't know the Digital Comic Preservation newsgroup, or DCP, is a group of people dedicated to preserving all comics both old and new by scanning them online. It's a repository of all comic knowledge, if it exists chances are someone has probably scanned it or posted it. It is obvious how I feel about the illegal downloading of comics by my above statement about my digital collection, but how do you guys feel?

The only way for me to get comics is to download scans offline we don't have a comic shop, the closest one is over an hour drive away.

is this an inadvertant ad for DCP, or just a coinc-a-dink?

wouldnt really even consider this - whats the point?! comic books in the UK only cost me about £1.80 - £2.65 which doesnt really break the bank and anyway i would prefer to have a comic book that i can keep, collect and enjoy rather than some crappy scan off the internet!!

Comics are only $2.99-$3.99 so downloading because u can't afford it is a poor excuse. However, what about older books. I don't care what you offer me, I'm not cracking open my original copies of the Mutant Massacre. So this DCP sounds great for things like that. How many of you would like to read the first appearance of the Juggernaut, or Kraven's Last Hunt, but you don't want to open your personal copies, or can't afford them in the first place?

The bad side to all this, I love comics, I like to pay for them to make sure more are made. That said, I cannot condone downloading newer issues. My suggestion to those of you who feel as I do, you can buy 40+ years of comics on CD-Rom and do the same thing for different titles, only you are paying for it.

everyone has good points. Comics are pretty cheap, and I can afford to buy them. But, I'm a big fan of graphic novels too. which run around thirty dollars a piece. I can't afford that...

graphic novels are $30 in the US!?! 99% of them over here are only £10-£15!!

For now for our times I would prefer to have the original. I never even thought about downloading. I just by the titles you want & read summary of ones you dont' want.

Graphic Novels run only $10 to $20 bucks, on the east coast of the U.S.

In the American Midwest, everything is cheaper lol. GN's can run anywhere from $15-$40 depending on the printing.

Interesting article man, it was so good I ended up writing my own in response to yours. I basically said what I think in my article: Cutting Prices Would Stop Comics Piracy. Anyways good stuff man, keep it up.

@ RacerX I don't mean to drive up the price, and I hardly think my downloading of back issues really would do that. My main reason for doing it is because I have no decent shop from which to buy comics, the closest thing is newbury comics and that's pretty much crap. I'm not one for downloading books the day after they come out, honestly I'm not into many current story lines, I love the old stuff and I'm not willing to pay big bucks for out of print stories.
As an aside, I think I've downloaded a book from a scanner with the handle racer x, but it's prolly an odd coincidence.

I can neither confirm nor deny that I download 'illegally'. Well, I COULD... but then I'd have to kill you all, cut your heads off, stick them in a safe and wait for them to de-classify in 5 to 10 years...

I downloaded a little bit. It doesn't appeal to me. It's not the same as holding my beloved comics in my hand. I don't think it drives up the price and I don't think physical comics are in any danger.

@ Josh, look at money conversions. It's about the same.

1 pound is about 2 dollars here in Canada/US

Hmmmm.... I admit I have for some older back issues, because me and Jen don't touch those, they are mint! But you can't beat the feeling of actually holding a comic, turning the pages. I have done it only for issues and graphic novels I already owned, like long Halloween.

@Whitknight, I googled a pic of a scanner, It's not Racer X, but he has a picture just like it on one a saw a while back from his scans for ya.

HAWK out.

You can download. Sure. I am into buying books. Reading it and sharing it with my son when he gets older. The search to complete a collection just is very fun and exciting. But, to collect comics, I do it for the pure enjoyment of it. Not for monetary gain. I just like to be able to say I own this or that. I have so many comics back in Jersey it isn't funny. I have some newer stuff from the last 15 years at my house in Califonia. I love just sitting there and opening a issue of a mag and start reading. I hope my son carries on this legacy. If he doesn't. At least I won't be alive to see it. I used to go conventions for fun too but since the 80's now it is becoming too mainstream and all the normal people are starting to take over. I feel kind of meloncholy and sad about it. But finding a hidden hole in the wall comic store is the best.
