When DC Comics made the controversial decision to kill(?) off Batman/Bruce Wayne at the hands of Darkseid, the comic world was left with one question, who was going to don the Batman Cowl and kick some bad guy ass out of Gotham City? We as you may know were given Dick Grayson as the new Batman. This idea was accepted by most of comic community, but why?
Dick Grayson for years was the rambunctious boy sidekick to Batman, growing popular enough even to hold his own fame outside of Batman's shadow. With the death of Bruce Wayne and Gotham in need of a new caped crusader, who best to take over the mantle then the boy turned man who proved to be at times an equal to his trainer/surrogate father. Who else could walk into the role of Batman without causing a great deal of controversy as to why this person is the new Batman instead of someone else. Dick was a member of the DC Universe for nearly as long, and was trained by Bruce himself, so everybody knew he could fill his shoes until his inevitable return (because who really stays dead other than Gwen Stacey and Uncle Ben in comics?).
Now we have a new Spider-Man, a thirteen year old half Black/half Spanish kid from New York named Miles Morales taking over for the recently killed of Peter Parker. Though race has been a reason behind most peoples reluctancy, My problem stems out of a question of why the hell is THIS kid out new Spider-Man? What the heck does he have to do with Peter Parker? Its not the change of Spider-Man's identity that gets under my skin, its the fact that it is someone we don't know, or even know how he came to be Spider-Man. I know we are clearly set to learn more about Miles, but why choose to stick some random kid we don't know yet into the role of a prominent and iconic hero?
We have never been introduced to Miles Morales before hand, which makes him some stranger to the comic world. The flaw with Miles' introduction is the fact that we were forced to except him as the new Spider-Man, before we ever had so much as a glimpse at him before.
Personally I, and many more people would have warmed up to Miles Morales should he have had any role in previous stories. He could have been someone or Peter took under his wing and gotten him prepared to replace him. But instead we are left wondering why some kid we have never heard of also has similar powers to Spider-Man (I believe I heard he does not have ALL of the original Spider-Man's powers) and has never even been so much as whispered about. Why would he just conveniently appear out of thin air directly after Peter's death.
So what is my main problem with Miles Morales? I think we not only needed to get to know him sooner before he jumped right up into the role of taking over an A list hero. Also I think we needed more time to absorb Peter Parker's death and let it unfold as a story, I mean we knew months before that the second Peter died a new Spider-Man would just pop up weeks later. It is more a flaw with super hero deaths in general, if you kill them, why do you feel the need to replace them? Aside from Batman (who mainly had to defend Gotham alone) these heroes could be left dead in order to build tension in stress and add character depth when showing characters handle the death of a hero instead of combing through back issues for his/her replacement or creating a new one that doesn't quite make sense yet.
