On September 20th, Harry Potter's actress, Emma Watson, made a passionate plea and challenge to men everywhere to help alleviate the suffering of girls and women everywhere by becoming champions for the cause of Gender Equality.  She cited her own pain when she discovered that, as a teenager, she was becoming sexualized by the media and pledged to be in control of her own body.  This is defintely a message worth taking to heart for this community.

"These rights I consider to be human rights but I am one of the lucky ones. My life is a sheer privilege because my parents didn’t love me less because I was born a daughter. My school did not limit me because I was a girl. My mentors didn’t assume I would go less far because I might give birth to a child one day. These influencers were the gender equality ambassadors that made who I am today. They may not know it, but they are the inadvertent feminists who are. And we need more of those.  And if you still hate the word—it is not the word that is important but the idea and the ambition behind it. Because not all women have been afforded the same rights that I have. In fact, statistically, very few have been.

In 1997, Hilary Clinton made a famous speech in Beijing about women’s rights. Sadly many of the things she wanted to change are still a reality today.

But what stood out for me the most was that only 30 per cent of her audience were male. How can we affect change in the world when only half of it is invited or feel welcome to participate in the conversation?

Men—I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue too."

Great news. Seriously, I'm all for this. Everyone should be treated equally........but what the [frick] does this have to do with comic books or comic book films?

I agree with the message, but this article doesn't belong here.

If people don't support gender equality already, then I doubt anything that anyone says would sway their opinion.

I asked this question myself about what is has to do with CBMs and I did a CBM search for Emma Watson and found that the site, as I have seen so often myself, is filled with Emma Watson stories do to her connection with the movie industry. CBM has always supported Sci-Fi news and news about Sci-Fi stars so I believe it relates as much as trending news about Interstellar, Hercules, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes and such.

@gangbuster
Not.....not really.

You're trying to compare a taboo topic like feminism to news about films that revolve around talking apes....space ships and aliens....a man who fights mythical creatures....and flying a ship through a black hole. This site isn't meant for news on anything and everything, it's specifically meant for things based in the genre of "fantasy" and "action adventure". Not "current events".

....So lets say Sandra Bullock did a speech about protecting an endangered species or something, it would have a place here because she was in a sci-fi movie? (Gravity)

agree to disagree then

Mark Ruffalo is currently doing a lot of stuff dealing with clean water. Imagine if the site got flooded with articles about that topic...

I'm all for gender equality, but not from a feminist perspective.

Joss Whedon was featured in a well-received article here on this site speaking about feminism and his only connection was that he was mentioned as the director of Avengers 2. The article was written by 0megaDaGod on 11/8/2013 and was well received by this community. Here is the link: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/other_news/news/?a=89766

And? Just because an article on a topic like that managed to slip through the cracks doesn't mean everyone should flood the site with that type of stuff. It's simple: stick to the topic at hand. And this isn't the topic.

AsgardianHobo - 9/24/2014, 10:58 AM
Well, Joss Whedon was the director of the most successful CBM of all time, and is directing probably the next most successful one as we speak.

His opinion has more relevance to me than someone who was in Harry Potter years ago. But you make a point that it probably shouldn't be here as well.

Hit the nail on the head.

And to add to what @AsgardianHobo said, not only does Joss's opinion have more relevance to him as a person, but it does to this whole entire site. Like he stated, Joss directed the largest CBM of the 20th century. Anything he says could honestly be a news article on this website. If he was interviewed and said everyone was a clone of satan, that would be covered on CBM. No offense to Emma Watson, but she honestly isn't even on the same caliber as Joss Whedon in terms of fiction based material.

Editors and "Power Users" have written several articles in the past and the only connection to the genres allowed are that the Actor or director was some way connected to a CBM or Sci-Fi movie.

So to think this is a "rare occurrence" is ignorant.

On the topic at hand I think women should be able to walk around topless just like men!

Angelina Jolie is doing charity work in Africa. I'm going to write a few articles on it just because she was Lora Croft and she was in "Wanted".

Sounds legit

Well...women do have sexual organs on their chest....so there is that...

It is true that several articles about a statement or action of an individual who is not CBM but related to the Sci-Fi universe has appeared on this website. If the editors of this site feel that it does not meet their content expectation they are more than welcome to delete it. I have not broken a precedent, and I've stayed within the guidelines of the site, but there is a strong reaction against seeing this article here and I would be interested to here why?

RextheKing - 9/24/2014, 11:12 AM
@Pasto a sack of fat is hardly a sexual organ and the muscle/fat ratio, and the amount of milk they produce is the only thing they seperate them from a man's chest.

Well from the sex-ed class I once took, I was told they were considered sexual organs.

I prefer everyone wear the proper clothing in public. Seeing a dude without a shirt on (fit or not fit) is uncomfortable, just like a woman with her breasts hanging out would make me uncomfortable.

But I don't know, maybe I'm alone on that thinking.
Pasto
Pasto - 9/24/2014, 11:20 AM
I once saw a topic brought up where some women consider the action of a man sitting down and slightly spreading his legs as "sexual dominance". Someone then brought up the point that men have testicles and when you've got your legs closed for a long period of time, they can become overheated.

I then began to laugh profusely.

@gangbuster don't feed the trolls.

Whether or not an article like this belongs or doesn't belong at CBM.com, I could careless.

However don't sit back chastise Gangbuster when the Editors do the same thing.
Pasto
Pasto - 9/24/2014, 11:28 AM
Now questioning if an article meets the standards to be on this site in a relatively polite manner is trolling?

Alright, I'm done.
