Well it is the end of the year and I guess I’ll talk about a few new things …

SMALLVILLE

This is the final season of Smallville and the producers of the show have decided to push the characters (The budding Justice League) through a dark patch which it is assumed will end with a confrontation with a “Smallville” version of Darkseid and the final emergence of Clark Kent as Superman.

How will this end?

Will it be satisfying?

Note: Logically speaking the only way to end this program would be to somehow reset the continuity of this mythos or have the events depicted on the show explained away as some sort of alternate reality ala “Watchmen”.

MCU a.k.a Marvel Cinematic Universe

The summer of 2011 brings THOR & CAPTAIN AMERICA: The First Avenger. What can I really say? I love both characters dearly as part of my childhood. Here’s hoping that the powers that be (i.e.; Kenneth Branaugh and Joe Johnston) will bring these heroes to cinematic life with a minimum of cheese.

I mean seriously, the Thor trailer looks great, but I still have the visual feel of a television movie. I hope to god that I’m wrong and that whoever cut the trailer was really awful.

Honestly I have yet to see a Marvel film that is truly epic in feel and scope. I’m waiting to see a trailer for good ole’ Cap that will perhaps change my mind. But the direction of the Wolfman had a meat-in-potatoes feel to it that left much to be desired in the “acting” department.

Director John Favreau talked at length about Iron man having its own distinct feel and flavor… Not trying to emulate Nolan’s Dark Knight, but I feel he missed the point and that point is: BELIEVE WHAT YOU SHOOT.

His replacement as a director for the third installment of Iron man could possibly be a good thing as a new perspective could be just what the doctor ordered.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS

There’s no better way to start internet jousting and trolling than by writing about or commenting on any thing “X-MEN”. So that being said, I’d like to comment on the latest X-film premiering in the summer of 2011 from the real world incarnation of a Star Wars “Empire” ie; FOX STUDIOS.

I’ve always been intrigued by the hiring of Bryan Singer as a director for this franchise. His direction on the “usual suspects” had been cited as a reason, but Singer admitted to knowing nothing about the X-Men. I don’t understand the CB movie business as it pertains to BIG STUDIO HOLLYWOOD obviously, but wouldn’t you want someone familiar with the characters to helm your initial film.

(Hugh Jackman’s audition tape)

Bryan Singer was definitely in uncharted territory during the production of X-Men.

The cinematic result of Singer’s version of the X-Men definitely engendered mixed feelings and a “either love or hate it” mentality among fans and casual viewers.

Mathew Vaughn has been tapped to direct the new X-Men. His calling card, another controversial movie known as Kick-Ass (See; Review “KICK-ASS the movie ...Is it REALLY "KICK ASS”?) … Apparently Vaughn with Singer returning as an Executive producer has been tasked with cooking the new movie up in under a year.

What will the result be? The new movie definitely has generated it’s own form of controversy and inspired the ire of legions of fans who have been crying out for FOX to let their rites expire so that the characters can be mercifully returned to parent company Marvel/Disney.

Who knows, but I for one am hoping for a straight forward action film from Vaughn. That’s about as optimistic as I can get when it comes to the current Fox-styled X-Men film.

That’s all I have at the end of the year … See you guys for another year of articles and reviews.
