Has Hollywood run out ideas?

Are you sick of it...are you sick of the re-boots, re-makes, re-imagining an "RE"-petition of Hollywood Studios?

That's it! I've seen enough. Enough unimaginative offerings from Hollywood studios who seem to be determined to re-make , re-boot , revive and/or re-imagine
material already presented in one form or another.

What happened to creative writing? Were are the imaginative concepts played out on the silver screen? Why does seemingly EVERYTHING made today have to be something from a past TV show, movie or cartoon that has already been made?

Popeye, The Munsters, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs( two of them!)Spider-man ,a million versions of Star Wars, Judge Dredd, The Lone Ranger, Robo-cop, Total Recall, Frankenstein so on, etc.

What the hell is wrong with this industry! Are there no original screenwriter's offering scripts to studios, or are these pointy headed exec's unwilling to take a chance on an original idea?

If they are paranoid about taking a risk on a fresh idea , then I'll happily remind them that 'Star Wars' was one of those scripts, and George Lucas was one of those screenwriters, and we all know the outcome of that.

I think of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and how creative and innovative it was with Stanley Kubrick at it's helm.

I think of 'Apocalypse Now' and Francis Ford Coppola, who's film redefined war movies.

There are many examples of true film-makers creating something original and studios willing to invest in them.

Steven Spielberg and 'E.T.' is another good example that comes to mind.
In recent film history the Wachowski brothers offered an original concept in the 'Matrix' and people loved it. In the process the camera technique 'bullet time' was established and is in common practice today.
Also 'District 9' , the brain-child of Neill Blomcamp , who created something fresh and fantastic! Peter Jackson literally handed the reigns over to him and he made a sci-fi masterpiece.

What's wrong with something fresh! The last unique thing I saw in a movie theater was 'Inception' and the public received it warmly. Me and my friends were talking about it for a week afterwards regarding the sub-conscience mind and it's relation to dreams- it was a very interesting topic .

Yeah , yeah I know some things need to be re-booted like the 'Fantastic Four' for example, and there are some TV shows which HAVEN'T been done yet that would be cool to see made into a movie like 'Voltron: Defender of the Universe', but other than that...where's the new stuff?!- the next big film phenomenon everybody will be talking about?

I will grant that some movies in the "pre-CGI" era might be good to look at for a re-boot or re-imagining like 'Jason and the Argonauts', but do we really need another 'Excalibur' or 'Frankenstein'-? ; it's been done to death!

Now CB characters which haven't been made into films are a well from which to draw material that can - and is- being used as a basis for screenplays, which is good.
Moreover , Hollywood has often adapted novels, short stories, fables and other literary sources , both old and contemporary into screenplays which is fine and dandy if it hasn't been done already and/or the original didn't totally suck deserving a re-make.

Look , all I'm saying is ,"ENOUGH WITH THE RE-BOOT/RE-MAKE STUFF!" Give us something creative and original, and stop boring us with this crap.

I know what these Hollywood exec.s are thinking: " Let's do something safe-something the public is familiar with."
Don't insult our intelligence jerks!

There are many young screenwriter's who just need a chance to show the world what they can do! Give it to them, and you may be surprised what might come of it.

There any number of movies that are new and original. Art House movies and foreign/world films, are a good way to see something different. Also, not watching summer movies will help fix that problem.

I agree with what you said 100%

I too, am tired of the "Re's" of Hollywood.
It is starting to lack the originality, and creativity that made me love the cinematic world so much!

It is really tiring to watch perfectly fine movies, get re-made into something mega shitty.
It just happened to "Footloose"
Though it was not really bad, it was not that great.

It is Hollywood.
They need to learn that not all risks are bad.
Why stick to what has become the "Nomarl"?
There are so many possibilities and storylines that could be fantastic movies!

As an aspiring movie director and writer, I hope to stay away from remakes and reboots....

I agree, but I also kinda agree with ravennpilot when it comes to non-mainstream films. But still, good article.

Now here are some of my thoughts. There are a lot of sources that would make good movies, but sometimes they take way, way too long to get made (e.g. Venom, Deadpool), sometimes good sources are executed poorly (e.g. GI Joe, Green Lantern), and other times, dumb and/or unusual sources gets a film treatment (e.g. Battleship, Asteroids).

I also don't mind sequels or prequels, but that depends on the quality of the previous film, and the film itself of course. A good sequel/prequel should have story connections and characters (depending on the time span between stories) from the other film, in addition to new material and everything else that makes a movie good. Straight-to-DVD sequels and prequels are a good example of how they should NOT be made.

Nice article. I did a paper on this with the same title and i can safely say. They are not in it for story anymore just money so ideas have run out or are pushed to the wayside cuz of the bigger better deal. Its sad because what could be gold ends up being pushed back for stuff like GI joe:rise of Cobra

This issue has been brought up so many times its sickening.

The bottom line is this: there are WAY more original movies that come out every year than remakes, reboots, and re-whatevers. If people don't like the remakes/boots, then just don't go see them, there are plenty of original movies every year to go see instead.

Using the "unoriginal" excuse doesn't work. I actually agree with MTL on this one. Just take a look. We're on a COMIC BOOK MOVIE website. Every comic book movie that comes out is the very definition of UNORIGINAL. Its taking the creations, ideas, and sometimes entire stories of SOMEONE ELSE'S work, and turning it into a movie. How is THAT original? Yet we all love our CBM's don't we?

So basically, no, Hollywood has not "run out of ideas". Just look at the movies that come out every year. The original movies far outweigh the remakes and reboots. Its not even a contest. You may not want to see most of those, but it doesn't make it any less true.

You just wrote an Editorial about "Has Hollywood ran out of Ideas" google that and see how many other have written the same thing...

people have similar thoughts, opinions, concepts, and preferences. There bound to be re-used, re-imagined, rebooted, redone, etc....

The real question is, has the public become Jaded & over complicated. Everyone Demands new, the moments something new comes out it is compared on the most minimal level to something that already exist. This comparison suddenly becomes the deal breaker for the film goer that seems to know the "do's & don'ts" of the industry.

Somebody should make an article taking suggestions for movies that SHOULD have remakes/reboots.

Personally, I think The Lady Vanishes and The Third Man, both by Hitchcock, could make AWESOME remakes if you moved the setting from the world war two era to the modern day middle east.
