While DC comics heroes all protect fake and made-up cities.
Does this small difference mean anything? Can we all relate better to a hero that's protecting New York city or Gotham???
Back in 1996 it was touted as the biggest superhero bash in comic book history.
In some ways, it was. Tell me, what devoted comics fan hasn't wondered at some point who would win in a match between Superman and the Hulk? Batman versus Captain America? The Flash against Quicksilver?
The DC vs. Marvel mini-series (a.k.a. Marvel vs. DC, depending which publisher was handling the book) delivered all that and more. But in other ways, it was a great disappointment.
Simple question really. Most of us grow up being fans of one company's characters more than the other, I rarely meet people who have equal love for both. So, if you grew up a Marvel kid, will you always be one? What about DC, if Superman has been your favorite for decades, can anything sway you into becoming a Marvel zombie? Obviously the companies must know that the trend is for kids to buy the comics they grow up reading, which is why they both have lines aimed at the really young children. Do you think you can be conditioned to be a Marvel or DC fan for life?
Seriously, though, It's not two rival camps. There are loyalists on both sides, sure, but I think that has more to do with attachment to a character (or a few characters) based on a given writer's take than loyalty to a given company in general.
I'm sure most people on the Marvel forums have read some DC comics they've enjoyed (or, at least, there are DC comics out there that they would enjoy) and I'm sure the reverse is true of primarily DC fans. I tend to be more of a Marvel fan these days, because I like the talent Marvel is employing and because I'm not a fan of DC's editorial direction. It could easily go the other way, if either of those things turn around.
There are some fundamental differences between DC's properties and Marvel's, but those differences are dwarfed by the fundamental similarities....Marvel fans are smarter and better looking.
