Reboots are everywhere in Hollywood these days. Is it good or bad.

So I see that FOX is in talks with David Slade to direct a reboot of Daredevil. I'm kind of torn on this. On one hand, Slade is good with dark characters and themes. Look at how well he handled the beak setting of 30 Days of Night. On the other hand though, I'm frustrated because Marvel could have taken this series back under their wing.

I guess it is a sign of the times in Hollywood. A while ago, if a movie or it's sequels did poorly, the studios behind them just stopped making more of the same. Why bother with something, that does not make money, right?

Things have changed though as of late. Rather than throwing in the towel after a failed attempt, alot of studios have the route of rebooting their franchises with fresh faces attached so as not to link it with the older films that the audiences did not enjoy.

This is both a good thing and a bad thing all at once. I was really happy with the results that director Chris Nolan and actor Christian Bale got with Batman Begins. And I was equally satisfied with how well Casino Royale turned out with Martin Campbell's direction and Daniel Craig's portrayal of James Bond. These were 2 franchises that had some really good movies in the past but got sluggish in their later years. They by no means though deserved to be discontinued and the reboots gave them a shot in the arm to reinvigorate them and keep them going with a fresh new vision.

Batman Begins and Casino Royale are exapmples of the idea of a reboot being put to good use. What FOX is doing with their reboots of the super hero franchises they own really just seem selfish. Why is FOX even bothering with a reboots of Daredevil and The Fantastic Four. Neither were sucsessful. Fantastic Four tried a sequle which also failed. Elektra a spin off of Daredevil met a similar fate at the box office. The reason they are trying again in my eyes is simple. It's all about making a profit. There is no passion on the part of the studio and any passion the director has gets squandered and micro managed by the studio. Marvel would actually treat these franchises with respect, but FOX can not stand the idea of another studio making money off of thses projects, so they are content with putting out crap. Hopefully their semi reboot(thats what it seems to be) of Wolverine will work out well. A reboot should be done, if a studio and director are pasionate about the ideas they have. Instead all too often, studios like FOX are using reboots just for the sake of making a buck off a failed idea.

Not all future reboots seem bad though. Cage, Nelverdine, and Taylor really seem to have a good idea of what went wrong on Mark Steven Johnson's Ghost Rider and are trying to make a good film. I really think Nic Cage could do something great with this one. The Amazing Spider-Man seems like it could be fun. Again, I would prefer these to be be at Marvel but Sony seems a bit more respectful of their super hero movies than FOX, and I don't think this editorial is the place for that arguement. Oh, and I think that the right director could truly do something great with RoboCop.

So please Hollywood. I know you guys have to make money in Hollywood, but put thought into reboots and stop using as get out of jail free cards.

Actually Daredevil was successful it grossed over double it's budget of 78 million us dollars, and if the movie is good who cares if it goes back to Marvel because we would have gotten a great film anyways. It's not like Daredevil is the most important and involved superhero of the Marvel universe.
Also as constructive criticism you should include more details and focus more on both sides.

Yeah I tried to present the both sides of the arguement golden123. I think I may have gotten a bit one sided though. I still believe Marvel would treat Daredevil with more respect and therefore give us a great film. He does not have to be mentioned in every Marvel film or be roped into an Avengers spinoff, but he should still be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All Marvel comics characters should be back at Marvel.

@ironpool007- thank you! i've said this several times on this sight. the only reason most of us marvel fans are complaining is because these properties need to be back at Marvel studios. Spiderman is to marvel what superman is to dc (poster boy) and yet marvel will never be able to make films based on him... thats the problem!

i agree tehdude! There is no reason other than legal issues that should prevent these characters from sharing a universe together. Its what most of us fans want. If FOX and Sony want the moneythses movies would make, then Disney should write them checks and be done with it.Granted there is no way to predict how much money these movies would make, but Disney could make them an offer thats sizable enough. Disney would earn back it's money when Marvel Studios makes legit movies about these characters.

sadly marvel is not going to get these characters back until the general population is tired of seeing them. once they are no longer bankable, marvel will get them back and then they'll have to wait quite some time... otherwise fox and sony will keep the rights and churn out anything they can so long as they can keep the character and continue making money. :/

Very true. Unfortunately the general population has more influence on these movies than we fans

I still think DD was a better film than people make it out to sound.

As for reboots the one reboot that was really absolutely necessary was for Superman...that guy SERIOUSLY needed a reboot. Esp after the craptastic, boring, stale, stalkerish film they made in 2006 trying to recapture the magic of a film from 30 years ago. Single dumbest idea for a superhero film ever.

What I don't understand, is why are they making it a sequel. DD had a little over a seven year contract, with Fox. We were just that close to Marvel having the rights, and then we get this crap. I believe Slade is a good director, but what alot of people don't know is its not going to be a reboot.

I really just lost all hope in this film, and think its going to fail. Im sure it'll be better than the first, but I really did'nt mind the first one. I just think they could of lightened it up, a bit. But I guess im judging to early, and I'll give it a try.

daredevil was about a million times better than both FF movies and Ghost Rider.

The rights were just so close to going back to Marvel that this is extremely frustrating. It just goes to show that FOX will never let any of these properties go. Even if its a property they don't know what to do with, they'll wait until the last possible minute, and then start production on a new movie just so they won't lose the rights.
