Story Not Important In Blockbusters Says Disney Exec! (Hopefully Doesn't Mean Marvel Movies!)

Walt Disney Animation Studios chief Andy Hendrickson has said that it's money, not story which counts when it comes to big tentpole movies, even going so far as to slate Alice in Wonderland! Here's hoping this isn't bad news for Marvel...

Walt Disney Animation Studios chief technical officer Andy Hendrickson, in a talk at the Siggraph conference Sunday, revealed the thinking behind Disney's approach to their tentpole movies. Basically, with less and less people heading to cinemas these days, he believes that studios need to compensate for this by producing more big movies. You can read more about that by clicking the link below...here's something a little more interesting. After discussing the various strategies for marketing blockbusters, he then went on to say the following. (thanks to Variety for the following excerpt)

"People say 'It's all about the story. When you're making tentpole films, bullshit." Hendrickson showed a chart of the top 12 all-time domestic grossers, and noted every one is a spectacle film. Of his own studio's "Alice in Wonderland," which is on the list, he said: "The story isn't very good, but visual spectacle brought people in droves. And Johnny Depp didn't hurt."

Of course, before we all start getting frantic about Disney not paying attention to the scripts of any upcoming Marvel movies (resulting in mediocre fare like Tron Legacy) it's worth remembering that Marvel Studios are still their own thing, so I doubt we'll see a drop in quality any time soon! What do you guys think about this attitude though? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

"With a good script, a good director can produce a masterpiece. With the same script, a mediocre director can produce a passable film. But with a bad script even a good director can`t possibly make a good film. For truly cinematic expression, the camera and the microphone must be able to cross both fire and water. The script must be something that has the power to do this"

Its not like he said the story isn't any focus, or that the company is going to forget about the story in future movies. he just said not every tentpole film has a great story. Which in some cases is true, look at James Cameron's Avatar. The story is the same story we all know, but the visual effects boosted this movie to incredible lengths.

Whilst he's not wrong from a purely financial point of view, surely your audience (or a large part of your audience) walking out of the theatre disappointed that they didn't connect with the movie is a VERY BAD thing?

Why not have a great story that'll make your movie a classic that people will want to revisit again and again, like a lot of movies from James Cameron, Pixar, Spielberg etc etc?

It's views like his that give us movies that are somewhat enjoyable yet instantly forgettable - blockbusters should be GREAT (with subtext, layered characters etc), not "just okay".

Its not all about the Spectacle. People want a good story to be told, not just huge budget movies that are constantly churned out every year. This man is clearly doesn't represent Disney as Whole, but its clear that there exist in their ranks people who care about the company shelling out money for things that they hope put asses in the seats. Also....lets not forget the bad economy....maybe studios should have smaller budgets on these films, the limitations would have the directors get creative.

This is why I'm mixed on Disney owning Marvel. Sooner or later when the big fish swallow the small fish the culture changes for the worse. As long as Marvel has no directives from the big wigs upstairs they will be fine. Let's just hope this douche never get's in a position to do Marvel harm...
