The Lone Ranger Will Be An Origin Story

So says Jerry Bruckheimer.

The Lone Ranger is still a very active property and will come out after Pirates 4, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The movie will be an origin story beginning with the title character's time as a Texas Ranger . It is still set to star Johnny Depp as Tonto.

"'The Lone Ranger' is another one that we're working on and Johnny [Depp]wants to play Tonto, so we're excited about that," said Bruckheimer. "That hopefully will get done in the next year or so. We're still working on the screenplay."

Now, in most incarnations, Lone Ranger and Tonto are of similar age. Bruckheimer was asked if this would be the case here since Depp is in his upper 40's.

"We don't know that yet, that's what we're working on," he explained. "Just trying to figure that all out. You find the right actor, and you'll make it work no matter what their age." He's clear on what he's looking for though, and confident about casting the right person. "A great actor who's handsome and charismatic, which we'll find."

Here is a quick Lone Ranger comic book history lesson:

  • King Features Syndicate distributed a newspaper strip of the Lone Ranger from September 1938 to December 1971.

  • In 1948 Dell Comics launched a comic book series which lasted 145 issues until 1962.

  • In 1994, Topps Comics produced a four issue mini-series

  • Dynamite Entertainment launched a new ongoing Lone Ranger series in 2006 which has received both critical success, as an Eisner winner, and backlash for its graphic depictions of violence.

Many thanks to Wikipedia for the background info.

DogsOfWar-If they are going to go origin story, I can't imagine putting an actor out there the same actual age as Depp. Maybe if they go with a range in the 30's, Depp could pull that off. Either that or just make Tonto the "Obi Wan Kenobi" type, as long as he isn't still doing a Keith Richards impersonation.
