New ALIEN Teaser Suggests Universe Expansion Through Books, Video Games, And Television Or Movies

A new Alien teaser hints that Amanda Ripley's story will be told in 2019 and you'll be able to "read", "play", and "watch" these stories unfold. It all starts this month with the Alien: Resistance comic.

Prior to the new year, the official social media accounts for Alien posted a series of animated images that teased an expansion to the beloved sci-fi universe in 2019. There have been all sorts of talks about Alien movies and video games, but these specific teasers for A 6-Part Dossier Exposing the Secret History of Weyland-Yutani were believed to be in anticipation of the upcoming Dark Horse comic Alien: Resistance, starring Amanda Ripley.

It appears now, however, that 2019's franchise expansion will span multiple media verticals, including books, games, and films. The latest teaser this week once again focuses on Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley (played in the movies by Sigourney Weaver) and star of the 2013 video game Alien: Isolation. Labeling her a "daughter," "rebel," and "hero," the post proclaims that "Her story deserves to be told."

But it's how her story will be told that's the question. The clip ends with three intriguing words - "read," "watch," and "play" - which suggests 2019's content will come in the form of books/comics, a video game, and either a tv show or movie.

Of course, none of this should come as a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to the Alien news. We've heard numerous rumors for a television series and, most recently, talk of a new Alien video game. It was recently discovered that 20th Century Fox trademarked Alien: Blackout for use with computer game discs and software, which sounds like it could be some sort of follow-up to 2013's Alien: Isolation.

2019 has only just begun, but it seems like it's going to be an exciting year for fans of the Alien franchise.

Anyone see what one of the three alternate endings was for the abomination that was/is The Predator??

@HeavyMetal4Life - I did not even watch the movie. But still, care to enlighten us?

@HeavyMetal4Life - I just don’t get why they keep trying to connect Alien & Predator

I don’t like the Alien prequel films but to its credit, at least Scott is expanding the lore of Alien

The biggest problem with Predator & so many horror films is the fact that the reason why the work is because the connection of protagonist & villain

Alien works best with Ripley
Predator works best with Arnold
Halloween works best with Laurie
Nightmare on Elm Street works best with Nancy

The Predator film is just another first encounter film like every other Predator film. What made the Predator a great threat is you had all these ripped muscle macho men fighting him & the Predator turned them into pussies scared for their lives

Any new Predator film that happens from here on out should only happen if they bring back Arnold. If they don’t then there’s no point especially when looking at how well received the Halloween film was

@MalseMarcel - probably a smart move not to watch it.

In the theatrical release, the humans open up the Predator's gift to mankind, a device that calls itself The Predator Killer. Its a pretty stupid looking CGI armor suit that attaches itself to a scientist.

But that wasn't the only ending filmed. One alternate ending for which pics have begun to be shared online involved Newt from Aliens (which by the way makes no sense unless she traveled through a wormhole). Instead of armor, Newt is The Predator Killer they find when they open up the Predator's pod.

@MalseMarcel - So there is like 4 endings:

The ending to the film is it’s revealed a Predator left a gift for the humans in an Iron Man Predator Killing suit which is dumb

Another ending would have had Boyd’s character interacting with Arnold’s which makes complete sense

But the WTF ending is in this pod that is set up in the start of the film that the iron man predator killing suit was in, it would contain an older Ripley or an older Newt from Aliens even though you would basically have to then introduce time travel to the Predator universe & makes no [frick]ing sense

If you want older Ripley & older Newt, let Blomkamp make his Alien 3 Movie goddamnit

@LEVITIKUZ - yay a discussion

Alien works best with Ripley- true!
Predator works best with Arnold- true!
Nightmare on Elm Street works best with Nancy- true!
Halloween works best with Laurie- largely true... but Halloween 4 worked really well with Michael going after Jamie.

Did you hear that Arnold was asked to return to The Predator in a cameo role that would have set him up in a main role for a supposed sequel? Thank god he said no, he wasn't happy with how little they gave him to do for the role so he said no thanks.

I agree with you, to Scott's credit he tried expanding the Alien universe. And regardless of peoples thoughts about Prometheus, he succeeded in expanding and laying the foundation for some really interesting ideas to be explored. He completely butchered all of this with the bad Alien: Covenant, which is a real shame. I still think he or someone needs to finish the prequel trilogy, so that we don't have an unfinished story.

I actually don't mind them trying to connect Alien and Predator, to me it makes sense from a conceptual viewpoint, and the way they set it up in Predator 2 was actually kind of neat. But now you have a situation where Alien vs Predator is canon in the Predator franchise, but Predators don't exist in the Alien franchise. More importantly though, they haven't successfully been able to connect the two. Results have been mediocre at best.

And that's kind of the larger issue with these two franchises, more so with Predator but same with Alien. You have two franchises with iconic characters and a fascinating concept in general to explore for the two. And anymore when a new Alien or Predator movie comes out, I keep saying to myself "how fcking hard is it to make a good Alien or Predator film?"

I do have a little bit of hope though that new management with Disney purchasing Fox will help save these franchises. Fox has clearly shown that they have no fcking clue what the hell they are doing with something like Predator. They need to go back to basics with Predator, to what made the original so stellar. Or heck, use the actually good Predators film to explore the cosmos a bit. Forget that The Predator ever was released. With Alien, they need to finish what Scott started, perhaps with a limited tv series. But let Blomkamp do his remake of Alien3, which everyone except Scott was excited about. And use that to restart the franchise going forward.

@LEVITIKUZ - If they want to do a true Predator sequel they should bring back Arnold as an old retired Dutch who has PTSD and has been in hiding since 1987. One night Dutch gets abducted by a Predator and awakens in an alien like cage. He witnesses different survivors from different periods of time getting thawed out including Lt. Harrigan. Dutch learns the Predators have captured the champions who have killed a Predator and brings them to the homeworld for a tournament of Champions where the survivors must battle Predators and other alien creatures from different planets with the winners being allowed to return home.

@HeavyMetal4Life - They needed to make the AvP movies about Machiko(the human predator). Then they would have had a strong lead and a POV character into the conflict. Her story even lends itself to a good trilogy arc. With her fight for colony during a hunt, becoming blooded and going with the Predators. Her rise and fall within the Predator community, then her ultimately choosing her humanity. Then finally her trying to reintegrate into human society and her needing to use her training to help end another hunt. Would have even been in the future so it didn't mess with the continuity. Had they kept the original grungy Alien look for the human parts and stuck to her training and hunting for her predator parts. They could have just shot in old factories, mining and drilling sites for the human bits, and stuck to forested areas for her Predator parts. Since any outpost would be a worksite and the Predators prefer forests, any main set could just be a repurposed worksite in the forest(which are littered everywhere). That way they could kept the budget to a minimum like they seemed to be trying to. Best part, from the story to the sets most their work would have already been done for them.

The Engineers are dead and the xenos are an androids weird flubber experiments - so who are the aliens now again in this series?
HeavyMetal4Life
HeavyMetal4Life - 1/5/2019, 8:54 AM
@Floke - Scott I believe said that most of the Engineers are still alive, just on a different planet. I think he said the world that David destroyed was an outpost moon.

It still seems wild to me that with stuff like Alien, Predator, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Highlander etc in the running the single most satisfying 'modern day continuation of a franchise that's basically been there all my life' for me turned out be [frick]ing Karate Kid.

What even...?!

Alien Isolation was amazing and rgithly deserves a sequel. It had a couple technical flaws, namely the Alien disappearing and magically reappearing every single time where you were even if you did everything right (the AI just knew), and the loadings between areas taking the tramway (also dodging the Alien). Other than that, extraordinary game. Nerve breaking in Hardcore mode. Those androids were OP AF as well.

This franchise is dead...like Amanda Ripley, who died offscreen as explained by Burke in the AlienS special edition.
Are we just supposed to ignore this and to Hell with continuity some more? 😑

Asturgis - 1/5/2019, 1:52 PM
@Feralwookiee - There is zero issue with continuity, my friend :) First, that scene mentioning Amanda was cut from the movie and only added as a bonus, so I don't know if it's considered canon or not. In any case, Amanda died, yes, but when Ripley was in stasis for 57 years. It is said that Amanda became an adult and married, so she lived a long life. Not surprising then to see her as a young woman in Isolation, and soon in Blackout announced today!

The problem with the Alien franchise is that it was restricted in it's lore. An alien must be born from a facehugger implanting it's seed into a living being. And it was restricted to spaceships floating in space. Finding a way to bring the Xenomorph to planets seemed more troubling than interesting as we saw with Ali3ns.

Ridley Scott tried to give it an origin but ruined it with the convoluted Engineer plot.

If I'm being honest with myself, I was really getting about tired of the Alien universe after reading the Dark Horse comic books in the early 90s. Unbelievable they're still milking these things.
ImmovableForce

What stood out about the Alien at the time was the isolation and horror, which in my opinion was far surpassed by John Carpenter's The Thing a few years later. That s### is far scarier and more full of possibilities. And I like to pretend the 2011 version of The Thing didn't happen because imho, it got the nature of the organism wrong. Anyway, I'd far sooner watch movies about that than something like The Alien.
