Acclaimed director J.J. Abrams is set to direct Star Wars: Episode IX and has a few words to say about the online sexist and misogynstic trolls attacking Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Back in December, an Alt-Right group claimed resposibility for purposely lowering the Rotten Tomatoes audience score and criticized the film and blamed all of its problems for "introducing more female characters into the franchise's universe."

J.J. Abrams made it clear when it comes to the online hate this film has received from sexists and misogynistic fanboys. "Their problem isn't Star Wars, their problem is being threatened." He continued: "If you are someone who feels threatened by women and needs to lash out against them, you can probably find an enemy in Star Wars. You can probably look at the first movie that George did and say that Leia was too outspoken, or she was too tough. Anyone who wants to find a problem with anything can find the problem. The Internet seems to be made for that."

He does raise a lot of valid points. J.J. Abrams also said that he is very excited to continue the adventures of the beloved characters such as fan favorite Rey in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX. What did you think of the director's comments? Sound off below!

Well, yeah, the people who specifically had problems with the movie because of the female characters being female probably have other problems.

Oh no JJ. We don’t hate The Last Jedi because of the poor storytelling and poor character development. We don’t care how some of the things that were built up in The Force Awakens was completely forgotten and/or thrown away. We don’t care how the optimistic Luke Skywalker, who risked his life for his friends and redeemed his murderous Sith Lord father and turned him back from the Dark Side, was changed into a bitter old man that didn’t want to help anyone and wanted to kill his nephew when he sensed just a teeny bit of darkness.
You’re right. We feel “threatened” by some female characters.

The last jedi was bad for many other reasons saying people that hate it hate women is just you pushing away the real issues sure there is people that hate it coz its got female leads but alot of the reviews that said it was shit never mentioned women as the problem

JJ is trying to GUILT people into liking The Last Jedi the same way Hollywood was trying to guilt people into liking that terrible Ghostbusters reboot/remake. Any criticism of the new Ghostbusters and you are a “woman hater”.
Bottom line, if a film is terrible, it’s terrible.

@Mjolnir215 @NOVAtheSUPA

He's specifically talking about the folks who had issues with the female characters, not about people who disliked it in general.

@Kyos -
I like your optimism, but he is not. He is trying to dismiss all critiques by not acknowledging any other reason as to why people may dislike the characters other than 'because they are women'. It's a deflection tactic used to silence people.

Critique a terribly written female character? Well, J.J.Abrams just said it is because you feel threatened and you are sexist.

@Kyos - he says

Their problem isn't Star Wars, their problem is being threatened

So yeah

The portrayals of Women in the new Star Wars series are arguably offensive to women and a massive step back in the portrayal of actually well written female characters.

They are given temporary positions of power where they are demonstrated as being incompetent and generally shown as unlikable like Admiral Holdo.

They are given powers and abilities stronger than any other characters for no reason other than to try and pretend that giving someone abilities is giving them character development - instead creating Mary Sue's such as Rey.

They are given terrible writing and turned into a generic love interest with character such as Rose.

@Scarilian -
Older Star Wars could have benefited from more females, but Leia despite people dismissing her as a princess nowadays, was pretty hardcore in terms of actually fighting back against the Empire.

People tend to dismiss her because she was enslaved or captured, but she actually fought back against her captors multiple times and was shown as more competent than people give the character credit.

@Scarilian - I wish Padme had a personality like her.

@Mjolnir215 -
Yeah, the handling of Padme was unfortunate. Her character changed between movies rather than progressing on-screen. She had potential when she was shown as logical and putting others before herself, but she fell into just being a minor character/romantic interest in Revenge of the Sith.

@Scarilian - Not to mention Carrie Fisher WANTED to be put in that outfit.
She specifically said she asked Lucus to write a scene that allowed her to show off her body to help her carrier.

You can debate the fact an actress at the time believed it was necessary to show off her body to help her carrier but point is she wasn't forced into that outfit.
