SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Writer Lawrence Kasdan Would Return For A Sequel, But Not If It's A Disney+ Series

Solo: A Star Wars Story writer Lawrence Kasdan addresses the possibility of returning to pen a sequel to the 2018 movie, but makes it clear he wouldn't be interested in doing so on a streaming platform.

Lawrence Kasdan's name might not be as instantly familiar as George Lucas', but make no mistake about it, his contributions to the Star Wars Universe were significant. For starters, he wrote the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and was even enlisted by Lucasfilm to work on The Force Awakens decades later.

It's not exactly a surprise, then, that he was tasked with penning Solo: A Star Wars Story (alongside his son Jon), but with a change in directors and a multitude of issues behind the scenes, that movie had the odds stacked against it from very early on.

Reviews were ultimately tepid, while a $393 million global box office haul was considered a disappointment after the budget ballooned to as much as $300 million. Despite that, fans remain keen to see more of Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo, especially after the movie ended on a massive cliffhanger following the shocking return of Darth Maul.

During a recent interview with Inverse (via SFFGazette.com), Lawrence was asked if he would be open to continuing Han's solo on Disney+. "No, there’s not any talk of that," the writer confirmed. "I’ve never been particularly drawn to expanding [Solo] into a show."

"But, I do talk to Jon [Kasdan] and Ron [Howard] a lot about what went right and what went wrong with the Solo experience," he continued. "I would be more interested in doing another movie, not a TV series." We're guessing that means Kasdan won't be contributing to the Lando TV series that appears to have fallen by the wayside at Lucasfilm.

The ever-popular #MakeSolo2Happen social media campaign proves fans want Han's story to continue, though the most likely destination for a follow-up (if it happens) does appear to be streaming.

Kasdan's involvement would be a plus, but at the same time, Lucasfilm may want to start from scratch. Either way, with Ehrenreich recently signing up for a role in Marvel Studios' Ironheart, he won't have time to head into a Galaxy Far, Far Away until he's finished with his upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe commitments.

Do you think a Solo sequel could still happen or has the moment passed?

What about a Disney+ movie then?

Not that I want another movie though. Think that if the Lando show ever get's of the ground, I could see Ehrenreich's Han show up in that. Same with Qi'Ra and Maul.

I'd like to see Solo get a follow up. I had zero faith in it when it was announced, but I was pleasantly surprised by it when I went to see it, especially considering its troubled production. It's not a mind-blowing or groundbreaking addition to the Star Wars franchise in any way, but it's a simple, perfectly enjoyable adventure and made a nice change from the Skywalker Saga.

I still think it might've worked a bit better if they'd cast an even younger actor as Han, but I think Alden Ehrenreich did a good job with it, and felt like he was playing a pretty authentic Han without it feeling like he was doing an impression the whole time.

Well, releasing it a few short weeks after a major MCU film was a BAD idea.

Oddly enough, this is my favorite Star Wars film (and I've seen all of the live action ones), and I never "really" liked Han as a character (he was just so-so), so that was odd. I'd have to watch it another time or two to try to better understand "why" I like this one the best.

But, offhand, I liked the characters' dialogue (it seems more realistic than the others) and the characters themselves seemed more like "real" people because of this, and because of their actions.

And I thought it worked well as an "origin" story for the main character (who I actually liked in this film).

While I'll admit to his valued contributions to the franchise in the past, I wouldn't be butt-hurt if he didn't come back whether it be a movie or TV series. I'm quite happy with the visions of Faverau and Filoni.

I'd be down for a sequel. Solo was pretty cool.

@Fares - yea, despite what happened behind the scenes, the end result was actually a pretty good film.

I would say there’s no chance anything this film will ever see a continuation, but they’re making a Rogue One prequel series so Who knows

If Kasdan hadn't written Empire and Raiders, I'd be shitting all over him as his recent screenplays have been nothing short of hot garbage.
