TERMINATOR: DARK FATE Star Linda Hamilton Details Her Long-Awaited Return As Sarah Connor; Plus New Photos

It's been a long time coming, but she's finally back - and based on that first trailer, she's never been better.

With Paramount Pictures booking time for a star-studded Terminator: Dark Fate presentation on Thursday morning at San Diego Comic-Con, Entertainment Weekly recently got a chance to catch up with director Tim Miller (Deadpool) and returning franchise star Linda Hamilton (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), who will reprise her role as Sarah Connor for the first time in nearly three decades.

After having sat out three now non-canon sequels, Hamilton revealed what it was about this particular sequel that convinced her to re-enter this beloved universe. "There is a real gift in that so much time has passed, and that gives me so much more to explore with the character. Sarah Connor is the same person but I wanted to see how the difference in events have changed her and shaped her and send her forward. There was meat there. I didn’t want to just recycle the same idea. It’s a woman who has a different mission, a different story, so I wanted to see what we could do with that."

However, getting her on board was easier said than done as it took producer - and former husband - James Cameron (Avatar 2) more than one attempt to get her attention. "He called me three times before I even called him back. The third time, he was like, “It’s about work,” and I’m like, “Oh, hey, what’s up?” But, even with that and his big sell, it took me weeks to decide that I really could go there and might have something new to say."

While Hamilton did have a brief voice cameo in McG's Terminator: Salvation, she hasn't made an actual appearance as Sarah Connor since 1991, when she was last seen driving down a highway with her son and leaving us with some all-time movie dialogue. When asked about getting back into shoes of her most iconic character to date, Hamilton shared, "It’s not like riding a bike, I’ll tell you that. [Laughs]."

"Of course, one assumes if you put in the same hard work, you get the same results, so I went straight back into training really hard and it’s like, “Oh my god, you need hormones to put muscle on!” So just starting with the basic cosmetics of the character and all of the things that I had to sort of include in my new reality as Sarah Connor. But, really, it’s about building her backstory and figuring out where she’s been and who she is today. You have a character but so many things have impacted her in the last 30 years that it was like starting over, and yet, there is an echo of the younger Sarah Connor in everything that I had to create. But no, I worked damn hard. I spent a year-plus training really hard and working on her walk and exploring her deep sorrows and just so many elements, and more so, because there is a path there. By the time we started, I felt ready, but a year-plus before that, I was pretty overwhelmed with a sense of obligation and duty and love for the character, just really trying to make sure that we honored the past and created something new for the future."

As for Sarah Connor's current state-of-mind and latest mission when Terminator: Dark Fate picks up, Hamilton offers a compelling tease, "She’s a woman without a country. Her original mission has changed due to circumstances and she really doesn’t have a team anymore, she just has a thirst for vengeance, so that makes her very alone. She’s still a wildcard, but a wildcard without a real true mission is a lot more unpredictable. Basically very hard for her to find her humanity, so once again we get to take a journey on that level, to have some deep things that need to be rediscovered for her survival.

At this point I'd be surprised if it was good, please be good!

@bobevanz - Yeah I was looking forward to it until I heard the plot and that they were killing off John Conner....seriously they kill him off, and get rid of skynet just to replace him with a new character and replace skynet with a new computer thing, just to do the same plot as before. If they wanted to do this they should have either just made it a reboot without Linda or Arnold, with Gabriel Luna as the new Terminator, or made it a continuation of Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the show was cancelled on the perfect set up for this plot, John Conner was sent to the future, nobody knew who he was, that way they could introduce a new character and leave open the possibility of John's return in a sequel

@dracula - It's really just speculation at this point because we haven't seen the movie yet. Based on the one trailer, I hope it's good.

I wonder if Sarah Connors still has trust issues with Terminators. Her and Mackenzie Davis might have "issues" as a result.

The test screenings for this apparently went really well, which makes me wonder why that trailer was so gosh darn bad, especially considering Paramount Marketing released one of the best movie trailers of all time last year (Mission Impossible Fallout's Teaser)

@tmp3 - There was nothing wrong with the trailer as far as I can tell. Are you finally realizing how illogical bandwagon jumping is?

@rkshuttleworth - I don't know, I thought the trailer was pretty bad. Looked like another Genisys.

@tmp3 - curious as to why it has taken so long to get Linda Hamilton back on board. Looking back on all the other films, it strikes me odd that she hasn't even made a cameo.

@Frshcoupe - cgi on an unfinished film aside... I thought the trailer looked good enough for me to anticipate it... I wasn’t over the moon... but I’ll definitely check it out...

While I admit this is probably going to be the best one since the original two, it's still going to be hard for me to enjoy it. I wish they would have held off on all the shitty ones.

@JohnnyStorm - You don't need t watch it. You realize that, don't you? You can let other people enjoy it so that we don't have to listen to whatever criticisms you might want to make up.

@rkshuttleworth - thank you for your unsolicited counsel..please do drop dead. Probably shouldn't have came to a forum if you didn't want to see other people's opinions and criticism.

I'll wait for the reviews to decide whether or not to go see it. Linda is a plus, but I'm not sold on the story yet. The ending has got to be good, because the beginning is going to suck.

Someone said the test screenings were positive so now I’m excited because the teaser didn’t win me over completely even tho I planned on seeing it in theaters anyway.

Off topic..like way off lol. I’m rewatching Black Panther again and it’s actually awesome. I liked It when I first saw it in theaters but over the last year there have been people who said it’s “overrated” and “not as good as people make it seem”. So it made me want to give it multiple viewings so I purchased it on blu Ray. Suffice to say it’s pretty darn good. I wish Klaw had a bigger role tho. Hope they announce a sequel on Saturday.

@Frshcoupe - BP was dope for sure. It sucks that Killmonger AND Klaw were essentially taken off the table for a sequel. They were both some of the better MCU villains and characters. Especially Killmonger..I'm stoked for a sequel nevertheless.

Just looked at her IMDB she did not just miss 3 calls from Cameron! I’m calling BS, she picked that call up like it had the ice cream truck song for the ring tone. Oh so woke.

Nice to see her getting some work, but Linda Hamilton looks like 10 miles of bad road. Arnie looks beat too. It's obvious this series was never planned to be a "franchise" and is limited to "let's go back in time to change the future". There seems to be nothing new they can do here. But, Hollywood has never met a dead hor$e it hasn't liked to beat!

Timerider84 - 7/16/2019, 2:21 AM
@Feralwookiee - there's a couple out there that some directors will not allow a remake to be made. One of them is Back to the Future, Robert Zemekis said don't even think about it, not while I'm alive. I would love to see Tom Holland as Marty in a Back to the Future remake.

Feralwookiee - 7/16/2019, 9:48 AM
@Timerider84 - Yes. I"ve read that about BTTF. There can't be a remake until after Zemekis drops dead, which is pretty badass imo. Personally, I think if it aint broke, don't fix it!
