Alien: Romulus contains quite a few call-backs and nods to Ridley Scott's original masterpiece and James Cameron's sequel, but it also reintroduces a much-maligned concept from Alien: Resurrection.

Towards the end of the movie, a pregnant and dying Kay injects herself with the Prometheus 5 formula to keep herself alive. This results in her giving birth to a human/alien hybrid.

Named "The Offspring" in the credits, this rather terrifying creature does look a lot better than the albino monstrosity from Resurrection, but taking inspiration from one of the least popular movies in the franchise by introducing another hybrid was a bold choice that not everyone has got on board with.

While speaking to THR, director Fede Alvarez revealed that the studio did initially have some reservations.

"They did [push back] at the beginning [with regard to the Offspring], but not because they didn’t like it. They just thought, 'Is it too much? Do we really have to go there?' And I was like, 'Yeah, now that you said that we shouldn’t, I know that I will.' So that’s exactly what we did here. If you’re given an Alien movie by a corporation that is owned by Disney and they immediately say, 'Yeah, let’s make it,' then you are failing somehow. So we really pushed it to the limit, and I’m glad we did."

Alvarez also discussed some ideas for a potential sequel, and - if the story does continue - it sounds like the planet Yvaga may not turn out to be the sun-drenched sanctuary Rain is expecting.

"For me, it’s always been about story. So, once we finished, we started thinking, 'What do you think happens when or if they get to your Yvaga? Is it going to be great? Or is it a terrible place?' We tend to believe it’s probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen. And then, a few minutes in, we go, 'Oh, that sounds like a sequel.'"

What did you make of The Offspring? Do you think the hybrid was an effective addition to the movie? Let us know in the comments section.

"Not a perfect organism, but despite an overreliance on retreading over old ground, Alien: Romulus does mark a thrilling return to form, and is surely destined to be ranked as the third-best Alien movie," we said in our review of Alien: Romulus.

"The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe."

The film stars Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and Aileen Wu. Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) directs from a screenplay he wrote with frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2) based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett.

Alien: Romulus is produced by Ridley Scott (Napoleon), who directed the original Alien and produced and directed the series’ entries Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, Michael Pruss (Boston Strangler), and Walter Hill (Alien), with Fede Alvarez, Elizabeth Cantillon (Charlie’s Angels), Brent O’Connor (Bullet Train), and Tom Moran (Unstoppable) serving as executive producers.

I really liked Alien Romulus. The ending gave it more "ooomppfhh" if that makes sense. Very good theater experience (Ultra Screen).

This is one studio note that was spot on. The movie was pretty solid until the offspring is there. Seems like the aliens grew extremely fast in this movie…

@Saintsinnister - I would say that the “offspring” scene seems a lot more mellifluous on a second viewing of the film.

"So we really pushed it to the limit, and I’m glad we did."

Well, you should have pushed harder, because besides that one element, which doesn't become a factor until the last 10 minutes, the movie played it pretty darn safe.

"Get away from her.... you bitch."

They should have pushed back on that... until Alvarez was backed into a corner wearing a funny hat.

@MarkCassidy - dudes a great actor and even he couldn’t make that line work

@MarkCassidy - Right! It made no sense. Especially from that character who hadn’t cursed once in the whole rest of the movie

@MarkCassidy - they should have stuck with “get away from her”. I feel like he pulled that part off solidly. Making it that exact quote didn’t make sense in this scene.

@JonAwesome - That would have been fine... something Andy might have actually said after saving Rain. The rest just took in right into cringe meltdown territory.

@Taonrey - is he? Evil Dead gets by on gimmick gore for 2 hours with characters who do really dumb things. This film is quite similar to his evil dead film honestly.

Don't Breathe is good and is his best work by far.

Saw it on IMAX Sunday. It wasn't scary. And it was a rehash of Alien 79. Just like TFA was a rehash of Star Wars 77. Just nothing new. David Jonsson as Andy saved the movie. He was fantastic.

Love it or hate it. The entire movie was a tribute to the Alien franchise. Act 1 pulls from Alien, Act 2 from Aliens, and Act 3 surprises by pulling from Prometheus. Personally I liked the last surprise and having an Engineer-like creature appear. It also makes one reproach what we thought we knew about the mythology. Overall I had a blast with this movie.

Romulus was fantastic and one of the best movies of the year. Easily the 3rd best Alien movie.

I really liked the moment where the alien was waiting for them to open the door and let the woman in so it could get them all. Andy calls it and doesn’t open, but it was a great example of having to outwit something so cunning and adept at hunting.

I wish there was a bit more of that sort of tension, maybe then they wouldn’t have needed that ending, which I was really not a fan of.

@Order66 - Dang Predators over AVP. I'd swap the two only because I was always curious to see the Predator take on a Xenomorph. AVP Requeim is right where it belongs
Order66
Order66 - 8/21/2024, 11:02 AM
@Arthorious - only reason I put predators over AVP is because predators was rated R and more violent. AVP was watered down and Pg-13. Requiem is a cluster [frick] lol

@Order66 - makes sense I could stand Requiem. Too much idiotic moments and story lines going on.

So it seems like this trend of having movies overly reference past movies in their franchises is here to stay isn’t it?

I really have no desire for member berries over quality writing and from what I’ve heard about this movie is that it happens far too often here with absolutely unnecessary callbacks to previous movies and lines of dialog.

And they really went with the human/alien hybrid again? After that is largely considered one of the worst parts of the franchise so far? And looks completely goofy and stupid?

@McMurdo - I heard the first half the movie was pretty good before it went into the nonsensical writing and endless member berries in the second half.

This trend in modern Hollywood has really gotten old. Remember this line of dialog from an older movie? How about this character that you used to love? What if we included a shot that looked just like that shot from this older and better movie?

Remember? We have no new ideas so we only recycle the ones from the better filmmakers of the past!

@mountainman - yep the first hour is solid.

@McMurdo - I’ll give it a watch when I can do so at home. It’s tough to get excited for these old franchises, but it sounds like it had some interesting stuff in the front half.

That human/alien hybrid looks hilarious, just like it did in the fourth movie. Seems like a strange thing to bring back into the franchise, when it was universally hated the first time.

McMurdo - 8/21/2024, 12:03 PM
@mountainman - that scene is unhinged levels of bad. They start off with solid motivations for the chara to do what they do it's not until they get to Romulus station that everything becomes a meme.

I can see why they hesitant. Even my 11 year old(his first R rated theatrical outing) let out a chuff laugh when the first showed it. I was afraid for it when that section of the movie started up but I quickly fell into place and enjoyed what they were doing. I felt even better about it when I noticed the similarities to the engineer design.
