We've had two trailers and quite a few promos for Denis Villeneuve's upcoming Dune adaptation, but these latest character videos spotlight a trio of villainous characters we haven't seen very much of thus far.

The first features new footage of the movie's big bad, the ruthless Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård). This take on the grotesque tyrant is described as "a force of malevolence, determined to feed his addiction to brutality. A gravity-defying monster of a man, gliding through the air like a phantom, the imposing figurehead of House Harkonnen ensures his family stands in stark opposition to House Atreides, ruling through fear, and determined to exploit the natural resources of Dune no matter the cost to its people."

Next, we have Dave Bautista as the Baron's muscle, Glossu "The Beast" Rabban, who is said to be "as animalistic and savage as his given name implies, the “Beast” Rabban is the towering enforcer and nephew of the sadistic Baron Harkonnen. Tasked with securing the Baron’s empire by any means necessary, he is a brutal force of nature, prone to explosive and petulant bouts of rage. Of those that cross him, few live."

Finally, The Suicide Squad's David Dastmalchian will play the Twisted Mentat (a human computer)Piter De Vries, who "uses the cunning and venom of his poisoned mind to carry out Baron Harkonnen’s malevolence, while staying one step ahead of his fierce rival Thufir Hawat in the ever-turning game of psychic warfare between the Houses of power."

We found out that the sci-fi adaptation had been pushed back from October 1 to October 22 last month. A recent poster confirmed that movie is still set to debut simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max, and we also got word that it will have its out-of-competition world premiere on Friday, September 3 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

For those unfamiliar with the source material, Dune follows the Atreides family as they relocate to the desolate planet of Arrakis to assume control of the production of the most valuable resource in the galaxy, the Spice Melange. Unfortunately, an act of treachery soon makes an outcast of The Duke Atreides' youngest son Paul, and he must accept his destiny as a powerful prophet of the Arrakis natives known as The Fremen.

Wife dragged me out to an amusement park in NH. Not usually a wine guy but the portions here are insane. Never thought I’d have as much fun as I’m having right now. Age is nothing but a number friends! Go out and live the hell out of your life!

Didn't know that was Skarsgard. Throw this in with other character looks, and I think the make-up and clothing department is gonna get atleast a few nominations

Why are all the Harkonnens bald? Something in the water on Giedi Prime?

@ShellHead -
The Harkonnen home planet's ecosystem, explaining that the world of Geidi Prime is "one where the sun is obscured most of the time by heavy clouds of pollution. Their skin is not used to sun, so they have to protect themselves from sunlight when they go on Arrakis."

I’m only excited because it’s Denis Villenueve.
I’ve read the first 3 books and honestly? Not a lot happens in the first one (that this film is adapting). It’s pretty bland tbh. I’m more looking forward to the sequel where Paul becomes the ruler of Arrakis, as unlikely as it may be.

@GetsugaTensho22 - (When you say "first three books" do you mean the Dune novel's three parts or that you've read Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune? Just for clarity, because your comment makes sense in either case.)

The first novel does do an amazing job at establishing a world (universe) and exploring a coming of age story, with some sprinkled-in musings about the human condition, great man history, and the grand arcs of humanity's story as a species. It's probably my favorite book, and I think the only one I've ever read twice.

I'm not sure a movie (or even two movies) is enough to cram the plot and worldbuilding in while leaving room for all of that headier good stuff, though. You're right that there aren't a hell of a lot of events that need to be scenes in the movie, but I do feel like it's better suited to being a 10 episode season of television. Something where you've got the time to have the character work and clash of philosophies, and let them breathe.

The sequel books (Messiah and Children) are good, too, but I do feel like it gets a little fan-fictiony as it goes on. I'm a lot less concerned with plot details like the precise fate of the Empire or a particular assassination plot than I am with the themes the stories are playing with. Personally.

At its best, I think Dune is ponderous and quiet, not flashy and blockbustery. (And I do agree that Villeneuve is probably a very good fit for that.)
