James Cameron On Making Avatar 2 Visually Superior To The Original!

James Cameron On Making Avatar 2 Visually Superior To The Original!

The director talks about how he intends to make an Avatar sequel even better than the first one, from a technical/visual point of view.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Cameron said:

"For Avatar 2, what I'm most interested in is getting theaters to up their light level... And we want to shoot the movie at 48 or maybe even 60 frames a second, and display it at that speed, which will eliminate a lot of the motion artifacts that I think are causing some people problems."

He then continued, saying:

"I think it's because the image is strobing... That's a function of the 24-frame rate, which has actually got nothing to do with 3D. It's just made more apparent because the 3D is otherwise such an enhanced, realistic image, that all of a sudden you're aware of this funky strobing which you weren't aware of."

Certainly one of the most frequent complaints about Avatar was that the 3D made people feel sick, and it sounds like this is something the director hopes to eliminate with the new shooting method.

Avatar 2 is currently slated to hit theaters December 2014!

Yeah, James, because these things are so much more important than a decent, original story and well developed, non-cliche characters.

He doesn't need to improve on visuals! He just needs to cut out the over cliched predictable shit, develop the characters rather than just slapping them infront of your face and climb out of his own arse. If he does that he might have a good movie.

I heard Cameron moan that the Kings Speech wasn't in 3D. Apparently he is sick of all these gimmick movies that just use it to sell action and fantastical stories... oh wait...

I will echo Matches and Ron. How about he not worry about the visuals, which were fine, though the motion issue was an issue, and work on having a decent plot and better characters to relate to? That would be so much more important, but they will market the crap out of the visuals and mesmerize the sheep into spending their money with the visuals and deliver a cruddy story once again.

@DAHAMMA: yes, it has haters.... a lot of people saw through the thin plot and recognized the sci-fi version of "Pocahontas In Space" theme. It's a great visual movie due to the effects and cutting edge cgi, but all in all - does it really need a sequel? For me, the story was actually DONE once the movie ended. No need to continue beyond it. Some "masterpieces" don't need a sequel, they're better off standing alone. Take the Matrix Trilogy for example... the first was the BEST of the three movies and it ended not really needing the other two except for fan clamors. The story itself was finished at the end of the movie when Keanu flew. The same could be argued for Cameron's Avatar after Jake became a permanent Navi, it was practically HIS story after it ended. Rarely do sequels ever top the first one.

I hated Avatar. Why in hellfire is it talked about on this site? Last time I checked, it didn't come from comic books...

And shooting at 24 frames per second gives a film a dream-like quality. It is what people are used to. It is what their eyes tell them is right. If you pop it to 60fps, people won't like it and they will have no idea why they don't.

you know...besides the fact that Avatar sucks.

yes..... IT NEEDS A SEQUEL..... this movie was indeed great because of the special effects.......like soooo many other movies it can be very entertaining without a very deep story line!! so stop with all this thin story-line bullshit!!!! or you go explain too people who are no CB-fans, what the deep story-line in x-men, FF, transformers, superman, batman, spiderman, etc etc is....

if you wanna see steel avatar's magnolias..... go find a producer and make the movie yourself..... what a bunch of crap...... on a CB-site talking about deep story lines........ get real!! these movies are entertaining....visually stunning.... and nothing else...

and for all of you drama-queens...... maybe go visit another site.....

Avatar summed up - boring, predictable, cliched but looked great so it has to be a great movie! Right? ... uh... right?

Avatar 2 summed up - see above.

phenomenon- Visual effects oriented films don't need a "deep" storyline. But it's not a crime to want a good yet simple one with details that make it seem original ON TOP OF those wonderful special effects. Those films you mentionned had that. Avatar didn't. Avatar had everything going for it and Cameron decided not to give a second thought to the plot and it's details. And it showed. Hell, the entire movie was filled beyond the brim with effects that felt like they were shoved in our faces just so we wouldn't notice how unoriginal and uninspiring the plot, characters and situations were. It doesn't make it a "bad" film, but it sure makes it qualify for the pile of films that "could have been better".

And no, Avatar doesn't "need" a sequel. It ended quite well in the first. You might "want" a sequel because the film's effects wowed you like none other, but the film/plot doesn't require one. Hell, if the effects is the only thing that sold you the movie, why the hell would you even want a sequel? Wouldn't just any effect heavy Cameron film satisfy you? So he could literally just leave his Avatar film on the pedestal that it's on and move on to a better/more original/just as effect heavy/brand new concept, no? You wouldn't NEED to see what ever happened to the characters of the first film after the first film so why bother? Just make a film called "Pandora", which just happens to be the same planet Avatar was on, with a brand new story about a brand new species or whatever. If his sequel is directly linked to his previous characters and plot, all that Cameron would be doing is trying to milk his cow dry. And old milk is never as tasty as the first squirt.

Avatar by the numbers (how can you stand alone and hate this movie)

$310 million total production costs
$150 million total promotion costs

$3.5 million made on midnight showings
$9.7 million made on IMAX screens opening weekend
$27 million made on opening day
$77 million made on opening weekend
$75 million made on its 2nd weekend (biggest ever)

Total Gross
$760 million in the US
$2.0 billion International
$185 million total DVD sales

Seriously, this movie was a MONSTER HIT. I know that some peeps may not like it but if you do you should seriously check yourself before you wreck yourself cause you probably stand alone on this one.

Personally, I loved this movie. Easily one of my top 5 movies that I can watch over and over again for no reason what so ever.

TurdFergunson- So everyone that didn't find the movie all that good, stands... alone? You do realise that Avatar made all that money on account of the special effects and the higher ticket prices of 3D right? And so far, from what i can see on here, everyone that complained about the plot actually did enjoy the special effects. So i just... i just don't get your comment at all. Because it made all that money as a special effects extravaganza, we should've liked the plot... or else, we all stand alone?
Shaman
Shaman - 2/1/2011, 10:39 AM
dragonking555- That is a great point. Cameron is the undisputed king of sequels. He just might be able to give us a way better film than the first Avatar. Which shouldn't be that hard really.
Mercurius
Mercurius - 2/1/2011, 12:13 PM
I love the idea of shooting the movie in 60 frames per second, that would be awesome. Up-ing the light level of theaters also really needs to be done for 3D movies. Now if we could just get Aaron Sorkin to script the film haha Xp.
TurdFergunson
TurdFergunson - 2/1/2011, 12:14 PM
ha. its ok, i see how you can take my comment misleading.

Basically in not so many words (and numbers) i was trying to state that even thou this movie made a ton of cash it is hard to say that it just basically sucked. now if you target the story line, plot, characters and then separate them from the special effects, and all the fancy 3D stuff then comment on those aspects then YES, @Shaman and @Tea have legit debates.

So my reasoning is not saying to love it cause it makes a lot of money, I was saying if you didn't like it, then based on the cash it made you may be one of many few that didn't like it.

Unless you can say other wise, I can't recall a movie that sucked and still make over 2 billion dollars. Most the time if the film sucks then it dies on the screen
Shaman
Shaman - 2/1/2011, 12:27 PM
TurdFergunson- Sorry LOL My bad ;) In that case, i'll definitely have to agree. For a film that made an amount of money to that extent, it certainly can't be all bad. The special effects were breath taking and the soundtrack was very immersive. And not only that but it was also THE film that kick-started the 3D craze yet again. 3D films that played before Avatar's release were met with a very "meh" attitude. So that's two very huge accomplishments going for it.
MeanMachineAngel

The first one was watchable but nothing special. Here's hoping he focuses on the story more the second time around. I'm not the first to have said this I know but it's important. Calling Avatar one of the best movies ever made must be a joke.
LOL
LOL - 2/1/2011, 2:18 PM
The only thing going for Avatar was the "VISUAL" stand point. It comes even from the horse's mouth judging from what he said alone: everything is about the visual experience. He says NOTHING about the story, etc. When it comes to the sequel, he says he wants to raise the bar off of the first one on the sequel VISUALLY... hey, it's entertainment, I agree... but if you're trying to look for something originally profound in the story: forget it.

The visual effects is what won Avatar its accolades.... never the story. It doesn't need a sequel. Too many people wasted money watching it over and over the theaters when simply doing it over and over the dvd/blu-ray was more sensible and cost-effective.

There are those minorities who didn't like the movie for what it was when it came to story were the smarter part of the spectrum: they KNOW that a good story can still sometimes trump the visual aspect when done intelligently. A GOOD COMPELLING story can take a visually great movie beyond even its supposed greatness. That's what is supposed to stay with you after you leave the theaters or after you finish the disk... it happened to me, I left the theater saying that the movie LOOKED great... but as for the story? I'd say "huh?"

BlackSands - 2/1/2011, 2:30 PM
LoganX35@ for some1 critical, you need to spell better. No matter what Cameron says, the basic gist was still "Pocahontas in Space". The whole plot was weak and the movie rode on the visual effects monster that it was.

MeanMachineAngel@ You're out of luck on the sequel story. According to the topic above, he was more concerned with the visual presentation aspect of the coming film if you read between the lines. It's gonna be another visual-fest while the story gets left behind.

LOL@ Indeed, the story was forgettable, all I remembered that that it looked awesome and that's it.

@ shaman..... there's nothing wrong with the storyline.... the only problem is, that this theme has been chewed over and over again.... you're going for reality.... right..... the indians 200 years ago in the usa...... the aztekes and the spanish...... the aboriginals and the english..... and I can mention a few more clashes between superior forces who exploited....foreign nations..... I'll be busy for a few hours up to these days........

if men had the oppurtunity to go between star systems.... this is probably exactly what would happen too alien encounters!!!

even our greatest minds on earth like stephen hawking, thinks a close encounter on earth too superior aliens, would be disasteres to us humans...... so the story-line is MORE than real....proven in the past....... and don't get me wrong.....I LOVE cb-movies....... but you can't compare made up cartoon caracters too real live events...... it's almost blasfomie!!!

spidey, the FF, x- men and supes, and the hulk are few of my favourit caracters on screen...... but when you talk about real life heroes in real wars..... than you have only to look at my avatar...... that's a person who really made history by his braveness..... a whole different story than paper-back heroes!!!!!!

my point...... the avatar movie could be filled in with numerous civilizations down here on earth..... and that's exactly why I can relate too this movie!!!

so...... original storie...... neeehhh.... but real event look alike...... you bet!!!!!

take tea's comments..... last samurai.....dances with wolves.... almost copies.....and great movies!!
