To mark the film's 20th anniversary, Universal has released Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park back in theaters, but this time you can experience the film in 3D. It's truly remarkable how well the film as has aged over the years. Which has a lot to do with the special effects' perfect blend of computer-generated-imagery and animatronics, that brought a lifelike quality to the dinosaurs.

Now, go behind-the-scenes with Stan Winston and his crew, as they build the full-sized animatronic tyrannosaurus rex. Click on the videos below. Enjoy!

JURASSIC PARK (1993) - Steven Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller is graced by state-of-the-art special effects from the team of Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and Michael Lantieri from George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic. The film follows two dinosaur experts -- Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) -- as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars. But as a tropical storm hits the island, knocking out the power supply, and an unscrupulous employee (Wayne Knight) sabotages the system so that he can smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park, the dinosaurs start to rage out of control. Grant then has to bring Hammond's grandchildren back to safety as the group is pursued by the gigantic man-eating beasts.

Practical effects are cool, but CGI also gives the possibility of making movies like Pacific Rim, Avengers, MOS, etc. Which to me, it gives a cooler visual experience.

I get that CG is more *ahem* practical than practical effects, but there's something to be said for the old fashioned way of doing things. Most (if not all) of the effects in JP still hold up. That T-Rex is still freakin' fierce.

That truly is one of the greatest achievements in film. The level of detail in the T-Rex is just amazing.

its not a case of one or the other, directors need to learn to blend practical and CG together properly. In Prometheus Scott had an almost perfect blend of the two, he got it spot on in my opinion.(it's a shame the storyline and characters were dreadful)
