Dwayne Johnson Is Once Again #1 At The Worldwide Box Office As RAMPAGE Roars To $148.6M Opening Weekend

Action star Dwayne Johnson's international appeal helped boost the opening weekend numbers for Rampage to $148.6 million worldwide, although the video game adaptation fell short of domestic projections.

Apparently not even mixed reviews can stop Dwayne Johnson.

After a stellar box office run with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the action star has once again found himself atop the box office charts - this time with his video game inspired adaptation Rampage. Despite lukewarm reviews for his latest blockbuster, the action film inspired by the 1986 Midway arcade game earned $148.6 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

Although New Line Cinema's Rampage actually performed below domestic projections, it still managed to top the domestic box office charts this weekend, earning an estimated $34.5 million. The Brad Peyton-directed film earned $2.4 million in Thursday previews and was expected to make between $35-$40 million in its opening weekend. In the end though, it was enough to unseat Paramount's A Quiet Place, the John Krasinski-helmed horror film, which earned an impressive $32.6 million domestically in its second weekend. A Quiet Place is currently just under the $100 million mark domestically, which is especially noteworthy given its reported $17 million production budget.

Moving overseas, Rampage really showed its might at the international box office where the film earned approximately $114.1 million outside of North America. It was reportedly No. 1 in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, which is a testament to Johnson's international appeal. However, much of the film's international success came from China where it hauled in $55 million, according to Deadline. Overall, it was a strong weekend for Warner Bros. in China with Ready Player One taking the No. 2 position and raising its cume in the market to $192.8 million.

Rampage's worldwide total currently sits at $148.6 million, while carrying an estimated $120 million in production costs and $140 million in P&A. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Ready Player One, directed by Steven Spielberg now has a worldwide total of $474.8 million ($114.6M domestic / $360.2M foreign).

Easily forgettable, medium grade entertainment lol. The ending definitely made up for the setbacks

I watched Jumanji yesterday. It was pretty damn entertaining. I don't usually like Jack Black but he was great in it.

Saw Rampage over the weekend and enjoyed. Big, dumb fun. Entertaining and did exactly what it was supposed to do. Definitely not at the level of something like Jumanji, but worth a watch.

I saw a comment the other day of someone saying "the movie star is dead." Lol.
