The post-credits scene attached to
Godzilla: King of the Monsters does lay the groundwork for the continuation of the franchise, but not in the way you were probably expecting.
We do get some teases of Big G's impending showdown with King Kong in the actual credits, as newspaper clippings reference some intriguing Titan activity on Skull Island. However, the stinger itself actually hints at the possible return of King Ghidorah, who is killed by Godzilla at the end of the movie.
GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS Review - There's Fun To Be Had When Titans Clash, But The Rest Falls Flat
During their first battle, Godzilla manages to sever one of Ghidorah's heads, and while it regenerates, that dragon-like bonce shows up again in the post-credits sequence when it's sought out by the film's human antagonist, Ian Jonah (Charles Dance). It's not made clear what Jonah intends to do with the head, but it's possible that he intends to use Ghidorah's multipurpose Titan DNA to create a new life-form, or possibly even resurrect the extraterrestrial beast himself.
Could we even see a variation on Mecha-King Ghidorah from the Heisei-era Toho films, perhaps? We're probably going to have to wait a while to find out, because Dance has already confirmed that he won't be returning for
Godzilla Vs. Kong.
