Apple TV+ has revealed the main cast for its upcoming MonsterVerse TV series that will be set in the same world as Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong

The untitled project will take place in the aftermath of "the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real," with the focus put on "one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch."

Here's a list of the main cast members, along with details on the characters they'll play, via SFFGazette.com

  • Anna Sawai as Cate, a former schoolteacher and G-Day survivor who travels to Japan to settle family affairs but instead uncovers a family secret.
  • Kiersey Clemons as May, an American ex-pat with a roguish exterior that she uses to protect herself as well as others.
  • Joe Tippett as Tim, an office drone who dreams of secret agent adventure.
  • Elisa Lasowski as Duvall, an expert operative with unwavering confidence in herself and her skills.
  • Ren Watabe as Kentaro, an intelligent, creative and curious young man who has yet to find his own path and embarks on a quest to learn more about his revered yet mysterious father.

Legendary Television is producing this MonsterVerse TV series that was co-created by Chris Black (Star Trek: Enterprise) and Matt Fraction (Hawkeye), with the former serving as showrunner. WandaVision's Matt Shakman will direct the first two episodes and serve as an executive producer.

Despite mixed reviews, the MonsterVerse movies have grossed over $2 billion at the global box office, and it was yesterday we learned that the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel will be released in 2024.

The series certainly sounds intriguing, anyway, and this is a solid ensemble, especially with The Flash star Kiersey Clemons among the show's leads.

@TheSuperMex - That movie actually scared me some as a young boy, when many of the Godzilla films didn't.

@TheSuperMex - I still love that Brad Pitt credits that movie for getting him interested in acting!

@LSHF - yeah it freaked me out as well. I used dream of these monsters trying to kill me all the time. Whenever it was on, I would have to watch it for some reason lol.

@bobevanz - But then you’d need Gadzooka, who only appeared in a single episode of Hanna-Barbera’s Abbott & Costello cartoon.

So like, what is the point of this show? No one watches these movies for the human drama. And they say this is set between KoM & Godszilla vs Kong, so that kinda constrains what they can do.

Got no enthusiasm for this.

@AscendedExtra - True, no one watches for the human drama, but it is possibly the most important part of the movies. When you make a monster movie without solid human characters, all that is left is boring shlock, barely good enough to keep a child watching.

A TV Show....I can already tell there won't be a ton of monster drama at the forefront on a TV budget.

I thoroughly enjoy the Monsterverse. That being said, Godzilla Vs Destroyah is hands down my all time favorite Godzilla movie. They’ve never been able to top it in my opinion.

@OldMan - The 1954 black and white movie is still an undisputed classic. Strong characters, solid story, great special effects for its time, reflects the world’s fear of nuclear war.

We can only hope the characters are actually good this time. They are, after all, the protagonists and the thing that usually makes a good Godzilla movie.

I was hoping that maybe ATJ or Olsen would return, but I guess we don't really have to expect actors or characters to stick around very long in this franchise.

Wonder if we'll get some monsters though. Can't just be another family story set against a monster disaster backdrop right?

TV shows that rely on big budgets usually are awful.
So I'm expecting this to be bad as well. Kenobi was another one that would have been so much better as a movie. Halo as well.

I think this is a big issue that streaming services need to resolve. Even Game of Thrones couldn't rely on a big blockbuster show every episode and had to pick their moments instead of feeling like one big epic tale. As fun as Mandalorian was it also had to pick its moments.

Just having a big budget isn't enough (see Amazons LOTR) you need the right team/people.
That's why movies are better in every way, especially blockbusters. TV shows give you better character development but its more out of necessity.

TV shows need to hire A list directors/writers AND give them a massive budget. But is that profitable ? Is it sustainable ? A theatrical release can make you profit in a few weeks. Could a streaming service for shows get a profit on it ? Will the amount of users grow that much ?

Back in 2013 Bryan Singer wanted to direct a full-blown kaiju TV series called "Creature At Bay", it was supposed to take place in the aftermath of a monster attack on northern California. They even wrote a script for a 90-minute pilot but for some reason it was canceled. Now 10 years later and we have an official GODZILLA TV series. That's some great news!
